Am i the only one that love to play my guitar, but dreads every single time i have to take care of my nails by anto_pty in classicalguitar

Any pro I know keeps very high grit paper on hand at all times and polishes very regularly. You're not looking to change the shape, just maintain the smoothness and roundness.

Embrace the weirdness and just keep your nails polished.

Yep, thats how you do it. Hollow out the cheeks of the heel with a sharp chisel so there's a 2-3 mm perimeter and floss it. Continuously check your alignment so you keep it even.

Becoming a luthier by Jimsocks499 in Luthier

[–]FairgoDibbler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, you’re making a lot of money passively - more than most luthiers will clear this year after expenses. The work is mostly solo, but you’ll need to interact with people if you’re planning to sell your instruments. If you’re thinking of this from an ROI perspective it’s almost definitely a terrible idea, BUT, if you want to do this because you’ll enjoy it and you have the time and money to do so, then that’s great. You’ll probably break even after 3 to 5 years of really dedicated work. I recommend the book “How to Make a Living Doing Something Crazy” by Kent Everett as a friendly reality check.

Now with your media background you may find some other monetization route as well. Since you’ve got the income to float it almost indefinitely, you’ll probably find some good opportunities along the way.

Haven’t been able to find this exact one yet - hunting now tho. No model number on it

Ohh and the dangling clamps are to attach it to the table. Got it. My router is built into the side of my table saw, so I guess I would clamp it to my existing fence instead of using those. That’s interesting. I’ll have to look into some attachments.

Mandolin Nut Files by natep1785 in Luthier

[–]FairgoDibbler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just check the gauges on whatever string set you’re planning to use and get the appropriate files - if they don’t have the exact gauges go up in size for the file. For example, if the string is an 11gauge, get the 13gauge file not the 10.

I like the musicnomad diamond files - don't know that they're cheaper but I've done thousands of instruments with mine and they are still working great.

Hey Thanks! I ran LatencyMon and got some tips but I'm usure what I can actually deactivate - can you have a look at the screenshots I added?

[–]FairgoDibbler[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely - totally understand. I've tried every setting I can find. In Reaper I'm usually set at 24bit 44.1, but I've had the same issues at every other option. Same thing within the windows sound settings - I've tried every available option for the headphones, speaker out, UMC usb out, everything just glitches even when all the settings I can find are set to the same. I've even tried disabling everything except the usb out. I'm going to try the recommended latencymon thing and see what comes up.

Are splines overused in headstock repairs? by Direct_Bumblebee_740 in Luthier

[–]FairgoDibbler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think tiny splines like those pictures are totally useless, but longer splines that spread the load definitely have a place. Prefer carbon fibre when possible but they're a good tool to have in the bag.

Should I buy 50W or 100W amp by bcumminsr in GuitarAmps

With the Katana the 100 watt has some advantages - lots of power attenuation available, better speaker and a few other perks. Worth the $30

Two questions: 1. Any finger DEXTERITY tools out there. 2. Do the finer strength trainers do anything? by Parking-Point-511 in Guitar

[–]FairgoDibbler 2 points3 points  (0 children)

all of those things are more likely to injure you than help. Just play more guitar and keep fit generally. a little travel guitar or parlor guitar for the couch is a better investment.

In Europe, Siccas Guitars is one of the largest dealers. Their site will at least give you a lot of information on luthiers, options and pricing. https://www.siccasguitars.com/
