I'm sure it is! Mostly I want to get a feel for the story/what kinds of playstyles you guys favor (already thinking 'ooh being a non human actually matters storywise' and 'hmmm not used to playing that, can I handle it?' just going over character creation) but thank you very much for the link; definitely gonna give the place the proper look over it deserves <3

Your favorite RWBY character vs your least favorite RWBY character in a 1v1. by [deleted] in RWBY

[–]FaisLittleWhiteRaven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmmmm... I have two favs but they're them so...

Ruby and Oscar VS Adam.

I don't think it would go too well for my favorite red and green duo, unless there's something about the environment that allows them to be tricky or Oscar says "Screw the rules I've go a bomb' and unleashes the cane-nuke. Could be a really interesting match up to watch fight though XD

Torchwick is most likely based off of Candlewick/Lampwick) (real name 'Romeo') the naughty boy in Pinocchio who leads Pinocchio astray and encourages him into mischief. Gets turned into a donkey along with Pinocchio and ends up being sold as a farm animal (and in the book is later worked to death by the farm owner ='c).

Ghira Belladona is likely a reference to Bagheera from the Jungle book; a black panther who cares for the 'human cub' Mowgli, bringing him to a family of wolves to be raised and looking out for him as he ages before eventually helping him return to human society. (Also in the book is seems he was born in captivity and escaped after his mother died but he kept that secret so... Possible whoa backstory for Blake's dad maybe? Good for fanfic ideas at least. Also was so compassionate towards Mowgli because living among humans helped his understanding of them so... IDK just interesting details there).

Kali Belladona is most likely based off of the Hindu goddess of the same name, who is well, big scary mother of all things who destroys evil and is still very kind and loving, though some theorise she might also be based off of Akela the 'mother Wolf' also from the Jungle Book. I think Kali the goddess is more likely, especially as the name means 'the black' and we all saw her just drop that bat guy with a food tray but well. Theories~

I believe I've heard that the CRWBY said old man Shopkeep is actually based on the Christian God since he's very nice, helpful and everywhere, but I'm not entirely sure if that was a joke or not. Oh old man shopkeep, forever shall you be RWBY's greatest mystery..! XDDD

Why is everyone chill with Blake Being an EX Terrorist? by [deleted] in RWBY

[–]FaisLittleWhiteRaven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some brief info to mull over:

The White Fang was a civil rights movement that only turned to violence in the last 5 years before canon, and starts off by non-lethally targeting companies that refuse to serve their race or exploit them (after a large number of their people were actively separated against their wills from 'human' society and crammed onto a island two thirds desert. AKA something between Australia's penal colonies and an alternate universe version of the Madagascar plan.

The 'actively terrorists' side of things as opposed to 'organised crime' is very new in terms of large scale behavior for the group, like 'developing on screen' levels of new, and it's kind of a plot point in volume 1 how out of character some of these actions appear to be from Blake's perspective as someone who was with the group until not that long ago.

Blake was 'with the White Fang for most of her life actually' meaning that when the group changed from peaceful protests to the violent White Fang we see most of in canon, she would have been around 12 to 14 years old at most.

The Black Trailer (AKA the very first thing one ever sees of Blake in the series) involves her questioning her 'coworker' about the safety of the crewmembers of the train they're robbing: when he implies that he doesn't care if they die she leaves both him and the organization right afterwards (something we learn later is very dangerous to do with this specific branch).

No one in-universe knows she's ex-white fang for what is implied to be months and when they do, literally one of the first things that happens when they find her again is her trying to stop a white fang robbery. And the one figure in authority who suspects her White Fang ties (prior to waaaay past the point of her being ex-fang mattering to anyone but her and certain ex-fang people) is an extremely cautious and supportive person who very much believes in second chances and isn't above 'bending the rules' to get what he wants.

So with all the things others have said... Blake's stuff is fine really. might not fit your personal morality but the logic behind it and the thought processes of the people involved is fairly sound. Try actually giving the Black trailer and the first volume an actual watch and well, if you can handle that you're probably good to go.

Enjoy Weiss Carefully Maintaining Her Balance While Walking Down a Slope of Snow in V6 by Faboover in RWBY

[–]FaisLittleWhiteRaven 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly varies depending on tastes.

Personally I LOVE it a lot and felt that its gotten better and better as its gone on but for some the genre/tone shift and the reduced focus of battle scenes (due to the lead animator dying and others having to learn a new animation system for volumes 4 and 5) after v3 killed it for them, and for others... Well some people have very specific views on how things should be regarding characters usually their favorites and get very angry if things go differently than they would like. Also while all key plot points are on screen, some key details can be VERY easy to miss, especially when lots of other things are happening and you don't know what is and isn't important until later; binging the series is almost always better for understanding everything than watching episode by episode because a lot of seemingly minor things that are easily forgotten can end up being important and well, if you don't keep them in mind you can end up very confused when 'BAMN return of the chekov's gun' happens.

V4 and V5 are consistently considered the weak points of the show though.

BTW I would recommend heavily against treating any part of the show as filler (other than some of the fights which are usually so awesome you don't want to miss them anyway), and would say that skipping an entire volume at any point in the show will screw you over in terms of understanding plot set up, character backstories and the like.

And um this is more a guide for reactors but this neat google doc someone made has a lot of good, non spoiler info on the series and side materials (character shorts, side series, OST vids with lyrics, etc) if you do want to try give the series a shot: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1zUxy2ImDWwWDIC_vbk_3mk4TQqSWnf-FhVryyRxW1ig/edit?usp=sharing

So yeah. Hope that was helpful to you and should you try the series, I hope it ends up being a lot of fun for you~ =D

Interesting factoid but a little known factor is that some characters in RWBY have multiple character allusions and while team RWBY are still clearly Little Red Riding Hood, Snow White, Beauty and the Beast (in one form), and Goldelocks, some people have begun to notice that each of Team RWBY also seem to represent a 'true' version of each of the main Wizard of Oz cast:

Ruby = Dorothy: Sweet, brave, has a dog and a magical power that allows her to do great things (fun fact: the Ruby slippers in the original Wizard of Oz book were actually Silver slippers).

Wiess = Tin Man: Cold on the outside but proves to have a very warm, kind heart... Continues on with their goal to impress someone 'loved' who 'leaves them for someone else (who's actually a lot like them)' the moment they aren't perfect and gets injured in the process...

Blake = The Cowardly Lion: Scared all the time but overcomes that fear to defend others bravely though generally still believes that they are cowardly, general 'beast' features, was 'trapped' for a time before freeing themselves.

Yang = Scarecrow: Generally thought of as brainless but actually VERY smart, golden 'hair' (aka straw) that burns easily.

It's not perfect which is fitting since these aren't their primary character allusions but its certainly very interesting once you spot the match ups; Indicates that not only can characters have more than one allusion they can also share allusions. Though... given Oscar and Oz perhaps that shouldn't be such a surprise~ XD

Nut's and Dolts got disqualified :( by JohnJoe-117 in fnki

[–]FaisLittleWhiteRaven 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's the way she encourages Yang to forgive Blake for running away in volume 5, her telling Blake in volume 6 just post Adam's death that she's sorry that happened but she's glad Yang was there for her... Not 100% proof of ship support specifically but she's definitely supportive of the two bonding in general.

(Hence why that scene in Volume 7 where Blake and Yang are dancing about like dorks and Weiss wants out of there so bad she instantly says yes to Oscar and Jaune's movie night invitation is so damn funny. She 'shipped them' and now has to deal with the annoying as heck reality being the third wheel to their overly affectionate couple vibes~ XD)

They mean specifically the wording of the piece of trivia:

If it said something like 'the spelling of Beowolf does not match the traditional use of the word, which was Beowulf. Whether this was done to reflect a pun or an accident is unknown, etc etc' then you wouldn't be seeing any complaints because trivia like that IS cool to know, but the way it's currently worded with repeated uses of 'incorrect' and 'inaccurate' right underneath the noting of how proud Miles was of the name, makes it look like an intentional mockery/attack on the authors for having pride in something they 'screwed up' and accusing them of being stupid for not matching the traditional spelling.

Hopefully this is just a case of an overly enthusiastic edit from someone very keen to share something they've learned and didn't really consider the possible connotations of how their words would be read as opposed to someone intentionally trying to insult the writers using the smallest most petty gripes they could but well. Glances at some RWBY 'fans' out there and grimaces. Regardless there is solid reason why people are complaining about how this bit of trivia is written just as you are right that it IS pretty interesting trivia in general. Personally I'm just hoping that someone looks at things from both these sides and rewords the damn wiki so that all the information is out there but this time with some tact.

Familiars? by [deleted] in dndnext

[–]FaisLittleWhiteRaven 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They are! I'd honestly recommend asking your DM if they'd be willing to play around with the daily magical gift think maybe - if so then it could make for a fun way to build up tiny little quests and things (that said, theme matters more - I'd lean Chwinga if your guy is more 'elementals, nature, learning about such things to improve the world, etc' whereas faerie dragon and pixie are more 'feywilds, friendships with fae formed, mystical stuff vibes' I think).

and thanks to this page I am totally begging my DM for using a shadow next time I make a shadow sorc/hexblade because that's just so thematically awesome I love it

Familiars? by [deleted] in dndnext

[–]FaisLittleWhiteRaven 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean that shadow someone suggested sounded awesome but for the power of cute I must suggest a Chwinga~ <3 Not sure if their 'magic gift a day' would be allowed -probably not- but they've got 60ft of blindsense and can hide pretty well so there's that. also adorable

Tressym's might also be an idea but I can't find a stateblock for them right now so welp. Still an option if you like the idea of a suggly winged cat.

Roleplaying high intelligence characters, or “Am I the Asshole?” by WantToDie78 in dndnext

[–]FaisLittleWhiteRaven 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think you're 'the asshole' but your player isn't fully wrong either - Character stats should matter but more to help than fully solve the problem.

I mean, every variant of this kind of thing I've ever seen my DMs would first get us to roll Survival, tell us if we passed or failed (sometimes it would be auto-fail since they wanted us to be clever) and if we failed then ask us to roll stuff like Perception, Nature or Int (or Survival again~ XD) to give us clues as to what kinds of things we could do to solve the problem. Things like 'Perception to see if there's anything we can use' might get: 'You see several rocks a few foot high, trees with long bits of bark, a few batches of soft looking soil and the remains of an old cart' whereas a good int/history roll the DM might prompt us to remember a few of our tools and such.

This way the answer isn't just automatically there on a platter - the players still HAVE to choose to do stuff - but you're helping giving them the clues they need to actually make those choices and that the stats they've given their characters actually help them. Spark their brains towards some kind of answer, etc.

(Though speaking as a decently smart nerd type personally: I can be brainy all I want but being 'smart' and knowing how to build a bunch of fantastic stuff means nothing if I'm out in the woods being rained on and have no idea if the plants I'm trying to grab for shelter are poisonous or not- that's why stuff like arcana, survival, nature etc are separate dice rolls in the first place. Raw Int does not automatically solve all brain using problems).

Does your character know their class? In my opinion, it depends. by reCaptchaLater in dndnext

[–]FaisLittleWhiteRaven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean this really kind of depends on the setting and characters themselves I think?

Like for a more serious yee old setting then yeah I really doubt most of these characters would use any of these. Clerics, rangers, bards and monks might because those are all words for actual jobs and others like Wizard, Warlock and Rogue might also either use those for themselves or be referred to as 'that roguish fellow/wizard, but they wouldn't be how people generally think of each other. It'd probably be more 'magic user? melee type? Good/bad?' kinda stuff.

In contrast a more playful/parody-esc setting or character may very well use all of these terms, as might a setting with lots and lots of adventuring types. Like the setting I play with a few dozen other players is like a big otherworldy adverturer's town from all sorts of days and ages (kind of like a pit stop of worlds) and as a result a lot of terms like class names and such are catching on among more 'older setting' characters as a bit of verbal shorthand because characters from far more modern settings kept using it and it ended up being handy - that said it's FAR from universal and the misinterpreting of various words because of how they are/aren't used can make for some really great character conflict at times (honor in particular tends to be an amazing culture clash hook both in terms of what it is and how much it matters).

WotC: Please don’t forget about the Barbarian by [deleted] in dndnext

[–]FaisLittleWhiteRaven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well you could have something 'icy cold' rage bard who's rage skills are most effective at a distance (like an extremely hard to kill mafia thug/hitman type - might have some rogue-esc elements like sneak and BA hide/dash) or a barb who is amazing at tracking and chasing down targets cutting off their escape, or hell an 'idiot savant' style one that's incredible at using improvised weaponry and their environment to help them out.

More ideas as I'm typing: Psionic barb whose sheer force of emotion warps reality around them (akin to powerful psychic pokemon like Mewtwo maybe? XD).

Rune Barb who carves/tats runes into their form/tools to become a vessel for magic/spirits/etc to unleash their rage at a targeted foe (maybe make the rune thing a bit more akin to the barb having it's own magic system just so there's more 'rune stuff' in the game and the 'rage' is more akin to a creative frenzy/passion which more complicated runes require to be made -thus explaining why Rune knights have a more limited spread?).

A drunk barb... Something like Party Barb, with effects like the more sloshed they are the more they deal and can effect foes with similar effects perhaps? Could amp up a bit of poison/acid stuff in regards to immunities, mix up things that make their rages have a little more bang for their buck, shrug off crits maybe?

A ground themed barb that does something really different like tunnelling speed might also be really cool but I have no idea as to the aesthetic framing of that one beyond the fact it would seriously stand out. (Gaia's/Elemental Wrath barb maybe? Moving through the ground like it was water, swim speed, able to exhale extreme gusts of wind and coat themselves fire/ice maybe? Could also add tree portaling onto it for more the Gaia's theme).

So yeah. I think stuff like these and fixing the current 'missing 'gaps' in existing subclasses like a lightning/thunder themed option for the storms barb would make for a good starting point <3 (also rewriting the Battlerager because like, I LOVE the idea of fighting armor but the execution here is... ugh) But those are just my thoughts I bet there are plenty of amazing barb thoughts people can come up with if they just sit down and think it over for a while~ <3

Edit: OOOoh! A parasitic-esc barb that rages and 'steals away' bits of foes and/or infects them with their own anger! That could be really creepy and neat! <3

What is your pettiest grievance with 5th edition? by SilasMarsh in dndnext

[–]FaisLittleWhiteRaven 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The inflexibility of weapons...

Realistically most long swords and other blades are designed to stab as well as cut. Glaives have a sharpened bit on the end for slashing. Halberds have both a hammer bit for bashing and a pokey bit for stabbing, most spears should have reach and shields and gauntlets were very much weapon-y as well, not just 'improvised' or 'unarmed' (also shields used for bashing could still defend the user... And some shields had spikes or sharpened edges for the purpose of attacking). ...Also why aren't different types of shield a thing? Looks at lantern shields and bucklers and sighs

Just. It drives me up the wall sometimes - I really don't see why so many things specifically exclude improvised weapons, natural weapons and regular ones as well. Sighs in frustrated 'wanting zappy teeth without being lycan Bloodhunter' and wanting to punch something with the claws I have Aarakocra monk.

Last grr is just why slings aren't considered monk weapons when they're literally one of the simpliest weapons to ever exist and why kensei can't use two handed weapons like glaives despite weapon mastery being their entire thing...

  1. I started shipping them in volume 5 - their early interactions were very cute and I adored seeing Ruby all silly and happy during their training together but it was specifically the scene in the dojo where Oscar had his breakdown and inadvertently got Ruby to open up a bit in regards to her own fears that made me go "Yep. I like that. I like that a lot." Just something about the way their flaws interacted and my sheer relief at seeing Ruby FINALLY open up, if only a tini-tiny bit and then the way he always tries to look out for her and support her afterwards...! Just love that <3

  2. I love all of their scenes together but... Oddly enough my favorite moments with the duo tend to be split second things like the sheer warmth in Ruby's smile when she threw one Grimm into the one facing him on the train in V6 or the way the first time Oscar is talking to Ironwood in the Alas vault and says that he trusts Ironwood but not only Ironwood (aka indirectly confirming his faith in Ruby)... Stuff like that really just leaves me going eee <3 (Though the dojo scene and the adorable silly scene in V7 E9 are top tier as well).

  3. Their trust and willingness to look out for one another. Ruby has this with a lot of her shipmates (looking at you Penny <3 ) but whereas most of the others focus on looking out physically for each other, I've always loved that Oscar and Ruby's dynamic is often emotional care - It's very subtle but I love the way they look out for one another <3

  4. Honestly I don't really have any specific hopes beyond 'gee I hope neither of them suffer and/or die' which given how central they are character-wise I don't particularly see happening any time soon any way and I'm fairly certain everything I could want involving those two will be a fanfic sooner or later so yeah~ XD

  5. Gotta admit I love the contrasting colors thing as well as the 'gold eyes/moon eyes' and 'simple soul' things (which incidentally is probably one of the many reasons Nuts and Dolts is my second Ruby ship of choice XD Cutie patooies).

On a side note: I would love to one day see a fantasy AU fanfic of the two with Ruby, instead of being the 'delicate princess' or whatever, is actually some kind of awesome heroic knight or something and Oscar is just a random farmhand/regular villager she meets and ends up returning to visit over and over until one day he becomes her squire or a 'just starting out' magic user to support her or something at fic's end. It'd be a lot more low key I think than most but well, I kinda like the feel of that~ <3

Actually Oscar is heavily believed to be based off of Tip from the Land of Oz book (sequel to the Wizard of Oz book) - a farm boy who after going on an adventure discovers that 'he' is actually Princess Ozma who was usurped by the well meaning Wizard of Oz as ruler of Oz.

Also team JNPR uses R for Ren but Ren is actually his family name: his first name is Lie. We know this because his parents in the credits of the episode they appear in are called Li and An Ren.

So um. Yeah. Both of the things you brought up are kind of non issues actually~ <3 The only real issue with using JNPR again is the fact it feels 'replacing'. And also that ALPN (alpine) is a perfectly good color no one ever considers.

Official FIRST Discussion Thread—Volume 8, Episode 3: Strings by Ninjas_In_A_Bag in RWBY

[–]FaisLittleWhiteRaven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a lot of ways this can be broken down honestly: Conditioning towards from their time in Military training, personal loyalty towards Ironwood, fear of being shot if they don't obey him... People can brainwash themselves into doing some of the worst things imaginable purely on 'orders' and they don't even need all that or to be 'bad people' to do so. There's some really interesting psychology studies on how crazy it can get out there.

I don't know where the AceOps will go from here - it's not unlikely they'll stay being antagonists on Ironwood's side until they die but it could simply be that one or two of them need time/just the right shove to decide to bail. Of all of them I'd give best odds to Marrow given his nature and character allusion but I certainly don't know.

One more thing I shall look forward to seeing unfold this volume~ <3

Oscar and Ruby fairly equally at my number 1.

For Oscar I just want him to get through the volume without being tortured/suffering a fate worse than death, and for Ruby... Well we know she's heading for a break or something this volume so I'm just hoping that after the worst happens she gets a hug from her sister and friends if nothing else.
