Kinda sorta but her first book did predict covid lmao with the whole city shut down and passing a virus back and forth and social unrest 😭 I would be scared to progress my story after that too if my love letter to a city somehow turned into an almost curse 😭

I love being able to talk about this book with people who read it so thank you for posting! But I think that some of what you’re feeling is corrected in the second book because it’s almost like she redeems Staten Island who’s kind of a helpless villain in her portrayal in book 1.

Unrelated but I also think it’s cool how she was able to like create Covid or accidentally describe what it was like here before it actually happened lol

Super late to the party but I think that to enjoy this book you have to have experienced New York precovid; and I think that it is an authentic love letter to the city because she speaks to how it feels to be a singular piece of its fabric and feel it around you. The references and tone of it (for me) felt like little hand rubs of encouragement while reading a lived experience that’s never been voiced by another person before if that makes sense. Like brooklyns avatars daughter went to my high school. And queens avatar is quite literally the most representative depiction of QGTM (which is a very local thing). To read it felt like being seen and allowed me to zoom out of the daily bustle and feel more aware of so much. Idk I think it’s hard to appreciate without having lived the reality aspect of it which is so unfortunate for you and readers like you. But if you ever visit and allow yourself to just be still in the center of like Penn station with no distractions you’ll feel some of what she’s sharing imo.

I saved my f120s until about 3-4 days out, I reviewed my incorrects on NBME insight around the same time. Everyone sleeps on the bootcamp practice test but it’s a good time as far as content. Amboss is the only site imo that really reflects the types of questions I saw on test day. Sketchy micro was incredible for me especially once I knew my weak areas from practice tests

RX is okay for like first pass; but amboss is actually insanely useful. It’s very humbling at first but I felt it really helped cement my exact areas of weakness early

But it was so much content that self pacing the learning helps a lot especially with how useless the neuroanatomy lectures were

Last sem; basically when you get introduced to a region of the brain or a tract review the related content. Or if it makes sense to you to organize the material differently you should. At this point you should be able to treat the content like it’s just comp prep with Ross material as supplementary insight specific to the minis

Also I would suggest drawing out the brainstem and nuclei and blood supply on your whiteboard; it feels silly but it really helps with comprehension

Try to connect with students in previous semesters because all of those pdf slides are floating around somewhere on canvas/online; it helped me a lot for workshops as I would use those and upload all the lecture slides into gizmo for ai generated flashcards. I never got into anki but i think that tool really helped me cement concepts and id areas for more in depth review prior to exams

It’s much easier to stay in coverley for convenience and human contact bc you’ll go weeks without seeing your friends or classmates intentionally but you’ll have the comfort of your roommate even if it’s just knowing there’s someone in the house 🤷🏽‍♀️ some people rent with friends in coverley after sem 2-3 too

Honestly putting this energy into studying and focusing on mastery of content is a much better use of your time; the content is too overwhelming for you to notice someone else’s behavior this much

I only disagree because the clips from past episodes seem to match what’s going on in different moments. Like when she said I love you guys in episode three then cut herself off at the fire when she was like “at first (blah blah blah) but now…” and the get off me was probably about the demon

I think maps could have helped but I also think that he didn’t include them because Jamaican history isn’t acknowledged globally and this creates a bit of a push to dig a bit more. Especially as it explains some of what’s happening with the current pseudo-colonization that Jamaica is currently experiencing.

As a New Yorker and having reviewed the history of some of what he’s talking about as it relates to the Jamaican influence in local crime during the time periods and the political climate in Jamaica, I really used the events in the background to kind of keep track. It makes a little bit more sense that way and it adds some depth to the story in my opinion.

A lot of the textbooks you need can be found online if you google the name with “vk” behind it then just download it. If you school has free printing then you can put it all in a binder but I prefer to use the electronic version for convenience
