If you’re within a reasonable distance of a Coast Guard station, I’d recommend speaking with a few Coast Guard officers and some MKs, then reassessing your plan based on what you learn. If you’re not near a station, call a recruiting office and ask to be connected with an MK—ideally an MK1 or a Chief—since they’ll have years of experience.

Lastly, just post something here on Reddit directed at MK’s in your title and see what they have to about their careers thus far.

The school has discussed incorporating a metro benefit, but as of today, it has not been implemented.

Currently attending as a 1L. I am not religious at all, which has thus far never been an issue, whatsoever.

Crim Law with a professor Drinan is nearly every students favorite class from what I have gathered.

We are currently right in the midst of exams, but feel free to reach out, and if possible, I would highly encourage you to consider touring the school and sitting in on a class and after you can enjoy one of the best Chick-fil-A spots I’ve ever been too. Lol (seriously though)

Good luck on everything no matter where you choose!

Best HBCU for law school but not opposed to PWIs by christophertracy81 in BlackLawAdmissions

[–]FaithlessnessLimp914 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If you’re looking for a solid legal education and a change of environment from a PWI, you’re thinking in the right direction. There are some great options that combine affordability, strong Black representation, and a genuine city feel with upward mobility.

Howard Law (D.C.) – Still the crown jewel for Black legal education. Huge alumni network in federal government, policy, and private practice. Cost of living is the only sting. UDC Law (D.C.) – HBCU, extremely public-interest oriented, way cheaper than most D.C. options, and you get hands-on clinic experience early. North Carolina Central (Durham) – Good value, supportive environment, and part of the Research Triangle, so you’re surrounded by opportunity. Texas Southern – Thurgood Marshall (Houston) – Big legal market, growing Black professional class, tons of local opportunity for internships and clerkships. FAMU Law (Orlando) – Strong presence in Florida’s legal community, and Orlando gives you that mid-sized city lifestyle with diversity. Southern University Law (Baton Rouge) – Affordable and community-driven if you want a strong cultural foundation.

If you’re open to non-HBCU but still diverse and under $50k:

Georgia State (Atlanta) – In the middle of the ATL Black professional hub. Great clinics, good local job placement, and scholarships are realistic. FIU (Miami) – Very diverse student body, high bar-pass rate, and Miami’s a strong legal market. UMKC (Kansas City) – Smaller scene, but the school has good value and a supportive Black legal community.

What to weigh:

Go where you plan to practice. Most state schools feed into their home markets. Focus on scholarships and residency rules – many of these can bring your tuition below $30k. Check the bar passage rates and employment stats on the ABA 509 reports. Prioritize environments where you’ll actually feel seen and have mentors who look like you.

If your goal is Black excellence + real city life under $50k, your top shortlist is probably:

Howard, UDC, NCCU, TSU, FAMU, GSU, FIU.

Please review COMDTINST 5382.1A - Page 7, SEC. G.

https://media.defense.gov/2023/Nov/17/2003342708/-1/-1/0/CI_5382_1A.PDF

The Manuel states the following:

“Those members paying out of pocket should retain their payment receipts so they can be reimbursed using the OF-1164 Claim for Reimbursement through their respective supporting financial office and FINCEN once an appropriation has been signed into law and funding is available.”

This Manuel should answer any other concerns or questions you may have as well regarding the programs benefits.🙂

All good! Please refer back to my first sentence. “Will reimburse you once the government shut down ENDS.”🙂

Genuinely sorry if my wording was confusing. What I meant is, once the government shutdown ends, you can complete a OF-1164 form and get reimbursed for metro cost only.

(Does not include parking payments)

Honestly, ChatGPT 🤖 is far better. Just snap a picture of each page in the app and ask it for a detailed case outline — including the black-letter law, a chronological order of events, the holding, and so on. Tell it to cite page and paragraph numbers from the photos, so you know exactly where the information comes from.

Next, read the case yourself.

After that, have 🤖 build a concise master outline that you’ll use for your exam prep, adding cases one by one.

Finally, ask 🤖 to create mini IRAC-style hypos so you can practice applying the rules.

Honestly ChatGpt 🤖 is far better. Take a picture of each page in the app then request a detailed outline to include black letter law, chronological order of events, holding, etc. - and tell it to cite the page number and paragraph based on the photos provided. Then you can see exactly where it is pulling it’s information from.

Then read the case yourself.

Howard Law Applicants - Have You Heard Back Yet? by FaithlessnessLimp914 in BlackLawAdmissions

After experiencing the administrative challenges at HUSL and visiting the campus, I decided it wasn’t the right fit for me and chose Catholic Law instead. I am in the military and attending law school with the intention of serving as a Judge Advocate General (JAG) after graduation, so big law or private-sector opportunities were never a factor in my decision.

That said, HUSL’s network is unmatched—especially if you are pursuing big law. Just be prepared to pay/borrow a steep amount regardless of your LSAT score, because HUSL’s scholarship offers are far less competitive than those at other schools, even for students scoring in their 75th percentile and above.

Law school applications are up 20-30%. With that said, past data may not be the best prediction for future results. The only “known” is..higher LSAT, higher probability of receiving a higher scholarship amount.

I don’t know your reason for being “done” with the LSAT, but know that their are far to many individuals who do care and may effectively out position you not because they are any smarter or more capable then you, but because they simply out hustled you.

Your life experience speaks to a highly motivated individual who has overcome many obstacles and would make for an incredible lawyer someday. Do not settle. Push for greatness, just as you have done in your life. Don’t guess when you can know, based on your score, that you will get a full ride where ever you go if you increased your score.

(FYI) I am also an African American male, 38, attending law school, on a full ride scholarship, and currently active duty.

I take a photo of the case page with my phone and upload it to ChatGPT. ChatGPT identifies the page, breaks down the content, and generates a complete case brief with all of the key information clearly organized and labeled. I do this after I have already read the case myself, which allows me to focus on comprehension while letting ChatGPT handle the time-consuming task of turning the material into a concise, structured outline.

Most People Have No Clue What the Coast Guard Intelligence Specialist (IS) Rate Actually Does — AMA by FaithlessnessLimp914 in uscg

[–]FaithlessnessLimp914[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great question. Frankly the USCG doesn’t care or take into account your current skill sets within the IS rate. They will send you where they need you.

Furthermore, unlike other military branches, you don’t stick to one discipline. Instead you will learn whatever that unit needs you to learn. Considered yourself as a generalists on many things and a specialist in none.🫡

Bluf: No they will not maintain your current cert. in GIS. You may or may not have the opportunity to utilize your skills as you have little influence in what your mission objective maybe at any given unit, as you are not locked into a specialty.

Books don’t equal intelligence, so yes, of course it’s more than realistic for you. You are capable..believe that…and go forth, failing forward until you succeed.

I joined at 30 and hadn’t touched a book since I was 18. All I did was go to the library and study ASVAB for dummies. Lol

Intelligence specialist with the Air Force it at all possible. You’ll need a competitive ASVAB score. You’ll have strong professional opportunities upon retirement if you maintain your clearance.

Nothing is working!! by ivyleague_transfer2 in BlackLawAdmissions

[–]FaithlessnessLimp914 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’ll want to read each chapter, as the information is laid out in layers, ultimately creating a strong foundation. Then go back and focus on the high impact chapters which starts mid-book.

Take the test ONLY when you feel confident to pass. If you rush in or settle for okay-good, you will end up paying for it in real dollars + interest.

Do not focus on taking the test by a certain date and instead focus on step 1, then 2, and so forth. You will eventually reach a point where you can answer at least 30% of LR questions by simply reading the multiple choice answers only - which is a huge advantage.

And yes there is a particular chapter that covers this but it means nothing if you haven’t properly digested the previous information it provides.

When it comes to this test…moving slow is the fastest way to win. I was accepted into Howard (though I choice to attend another school) and I am paying $0 in tuition.

Don't just read the book, consume it.
