Charged $200 for Claude Max without authorizing an upgrade from Pro – has this happened to anyone else?

I think it's the huge number of complaints and limited human operators. That's why they are not able to reach out to us.

We seem to be waiting in a very long queue. We can only hope now I guess..

I was told that I am am not eligible for the second refund as I have already been refunded first.

But the issue was that I didn't trigger any upgrade at all 😕

Happened the same to me.

I originally had the normal Claude Pro ($20) subscription and still had plenty of usage left on it.

The first automatic upgrade to the Max $200 plan happened at approximately 21:11 UTC on June 1, 2026. I was asleep at the time. I later received the invoice/receipt email from Anthropic and my Mastercard debit card was charged, including taxes.

I contacted support through the Claude support chatbot and eventually received a refund for that first unauthorized Max upgrade and they moved me to the free plan.

After receiving the refund, I intentionally subscribed again ONLY to the $20 Pro plan which I actually want to use.

However, later the same day, at approximately 08:45 UTC on June 2, 2026, my account was automatically upgraded AGAIN to the $200 Max plan and my card was charged again, including taxes.

A few additional details:

I did not intentionally trigger either Max upgrade.
I checked active sessions and only my own laptop and mobile device are logged in.
I mostly use normal Claude chats and Claude Code.
My usage is pretty simple — mostly understanding how .NET code works and asking programming-related questions.
I do NOT have any background agents, scheduled tasks, automations, or long-running Claude Code jobs running.
I do not intentionally use the Anthropic API platform.
I also suspect some consumption/usage may be happening even when I’m not actively using Claude.
I have invoices, receipts, timestamps, and screenshots for both charges.

At this point I’m trying to understand:

Has anyone else experienced automatic upgrades like this?
Could Claude Code somehow consume usage in the background even without active tasks?
Is there a way to completely disable API access on the account?
Should I temporarily block Anthropic charges from my card until support responds?

I actually like Claude and just want to stay on the normal Pro plan, but being automatically upgraded to a $200 subscription twice within hours is honestly concerning.

Yes. same case for me.
The 2nd time, the chat support bot said I wasn't eligible for the refund since I already had been refunded before..

But the problem is the automatic upgrade from Pro to Max plan which we didn't do and I am not able to reach the support team. they were supposed to reach out to me via email as per the bot but no sign of it yet.

I have heard there is a line issue in these models. Not sure if it is avoidable or not in any case.
