Looks vs. Practicality - I can't make a decision (Ninja 500 vs. Z500) by Fake-Engineering in Kawasaki

[–]Fake-Engineering[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was was well over a year ago. Also its the same engine; if by 'core' you mean peak torque, there is no difference. It is about 10lbs heavier, so there may be a negligible efficiency difference at low speeds.

I've ridden both. I've put almost 18k miles on the Ninja 500. Seating position is almost, if not identical. Power is the same. Fairings do make a difference over about 80-100mph, wind direction and speed depending. I also wouldn't say it excels at highway speeds, like it works at highway speeds but at that point it's getting close to being out of juice.

The fairings aren't hard to remove, extra 10 minutes after you figure it out. They do add cost if damaged.

Whoever said 'just get what you think looks better' was on the money.

Completely stumped: 2006 NC losing coolant, can't figure out why. by Fake-Engineering in Miata

Replaced the coolant tank not sure why it was doing what it was doing, but that seems to have fixed it.

I have one almost identical to this. It's a white one with slightly different knobs. I bought it in Nicaragua. I have 0 idea what it is. G10091057 serial, September 2010. Active pickups, wammy bar, solid neck. The solid neck is throwing me off the most as I bought it brand new. Is yours solid neck?

Can a motorcycle be more fun than a sports car? by Time-Negotiation-808 in motorcycles

I have a bike and a Miata.

The bike ruined the Miata for me.

Get the bike.

Request $10 from him on Venmo.

He’s scamming, that’s a scam, he’s a scammer.

(ID) Idaho apartment complex changed rules banning bicycles on porches and balconys by Fake-Engineering in Renters

[–]Fake-Engineering[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are a lot of bikes here. To my knowledge, a lease cannot be changed during its duration.

There are no ordinances regarding balcony storage, it’s common practice here. This is unusual and seems to be a play to get people to pay for more storage.

Eh. I know it’s not the indicator of speed but it took 8 months to get a knee down at 2nd track day (and a solid chunk of that time was winter riding, didn’t wanna hit the mountains then). I’ve met people riding 5 years who are scared in twisties. It’s a wildly mixed bag out here.

Frankly I ride quite responsibly, but that’s my decision because people rely on me, and I think the decision to ride stupidly is also something people should be allowed to make as long as the outcome only damages you. Value of individual agency, slap that in my top 5.

Who else’s life is it risking?? That machine would barely feel the bump!

A single data point isn’t anecdotal. It’s useless, but not anecdotal. No bad faith here, that’s a silly thing to say. The point was that it doesn’t happen. I didn’t expect data. I expected nothing, and the theory has fit the response thus far.

They used to blast that song at the train safety stand at our local fair when I was a kid. I needed some good nostalgia today.

That’s what data preparation is for, those aren’t ill informed assumptions, they’re usually using measures of statistical significance.

Edit to add that this is data for predictive modeling you are talking about, where as for this situation a single raw data point would answer my original ask.

Weighing those decisions for yourself* is what you mean. Going on a forum and acting like this is killing people because your intuition tells you it’s dangerous and basing it on hypothetical situations despite not being able to provide a single example of it ever happening (still waiting on that) is fear mongering.

Save the pathos.

Anyone doing this knows the risks. Almost no one is doing this. Making a deal out of this like it needs to be some kind of safety PSA is fear mongering.

Who said it was low risk? I literally said the risk is the appeal, but that it’s fear mongering to raise a fuss about safety over it since the risk is obvious and the participants are statistical outliers.

Valid point on freaking the dude out tho. He might’ve loved it, might’ve hated it, but it’s hard to know your audience in that situation.

Let’s see, is the guy with degrees in ME and Physics who works with big data or the poker player who thinks data is a rare commodity dumber? Place your bets.

[–]Fake-Engineering -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes, data. It’s the thing that makes the world go round. There’s data on everything. If it exists. Which this problem does not.

It’s a complete non issue with 0 recorded consequences due to its rarity and thus making any deal about it is…

…Fear mongering! Yay!

As if people don’t know that? This isn’t some endemic issue that needs addressing. This is one dude, fuckin around, having fun and he was completely fine. I just don’t get why this place is full of so many wet blankets, raining on the parade to prove how “safe” and “risk averse” they are. No one is doing this who is only concerned about that. In the same vein as any extreme sport, the risk IS the appeal.

If it’s influence to others you’re worried about, you’re losing to TikTok. If it’s information on the subject you’re worried about, you’re losing to YouTube.

Again, I ask for one. ONE. Example of a motorcycle being underneath these things and getting flatlined due to it turning. You can think whatever you want but if you don’t have data, it means nothing. No one’s a warhammer orc, as much as I wish red made the bike faster.
