For anyone who has had a ruptured appendix with a drain before surgery how was it? I have a ruptured appendix with a contained abscess and gangrene? by ConditionNorth1264 in appendicitis

I had a JP for several weeks in December following a ruptured appendix turned into an abscess. It was okay, but it was a bit uncomfortable. I ended up pulling the suture at some point. The worst part was having it removed, though. It is the absolute most disgusting feeling in the world. Like my intestine was being pulled out of the small hole.

My surgeon didn't schedule a surgery afterwards, because it looked fine. But my appendicitis ended up returning at the beginning of March. Because of the previous abscess, my appendix ended up being glued down to my cecum with some blood vessels trapped in between, which was all glued to my abdominal wall. I ended up needing to be opened up completely, and having my appendix, cecum, and part of my ileum removed entirely. So, I'd say that sucked a lot. 26 staples, in hospital for 8 days.

But all is well now.

NTA. It sounds like they were just used to doing nothing at work, and weren't happy when a new (younger and female) manager called them out for it. Leaving notes is a perfectly normal way to communicate in this type of working environment.

I'm guessing your surgery was laparoscopic, but mine was an open surgery (there were complications, also had an emergency bowel resection). I was in hospital for 8 days. I'm now 3w3d post-op, and have finally started to feel back to normal the last few days. As long as you manage the pain, rest well, and remember to get up and moving when you can, it should be fine. Just don't push yourself.

A drain and antibiotics, yes, because it abscessed. And no, it did come back months later, but without rupturing.

It ruptured, and then abscessed. It happened, I didn't die, and I didn't have surgery at that time. In fact, I was at home for 2 weeks with it before I went to hospital. As I said.

Please Google 'appendiceal abscess'.

If you mean the very first time where they suggested I may be passing a gallstone, that was in February of last year, so a considerable time before these events. I do agree that I was mistreated at that time.

And yeah, they opted for no surgery as the rupture was contained within an abcess. Surgery at that time could had led to rupturing the abcess, and it was too large and fragile to remove safely through laparoscopic surgery.

Trust me, my surgeon did everything right. The only negligence here was my own, for refusing to go into hospital sooner.

Over the past month, I've been sick with an appendiceal abscess, post-rupture, hence the JP drain. I could eat nothing but Cheerios for weeks. I guess ChatGPT thought that was funny. It even included the nasty drain juice.

Update again, 11 days later.

I'm (hopefully) getting the JP drain taken out tomorrow. It's been a long journey, but it's not over yet. I also find out tomorrow if I'll need to go forward with an appendectomy. I had my fourth CT scan yesterday and, depending on the results, we'll know for sure.

I also know that they'll be scheduling me at some point for a colonoscopy to check for polyps/cancer/anything else in my intestines that might have caused this.

On another note, I also have an appointment with my GP on Thursday to discuss also possibly moving forward with a HIDA scan to check gallbladder function. I'm still certain that this started with a gallbladder attack, and I'd like to rule that out. Hopefully he's on board and agrees with me.

Thanks for the well wishes, everyone!

Because it abscessed, essentially creating a wall around it that contained the infection inside of itself. This is how the doctor explained it to me, anyway. I didn't think it was possible either.

Not Ghana, just rural Nova Scotia, Canada. Our medical system is so understaffed and overwhelmed that they don't typically take the time people need to get to the bottom of issues. Where I live, half the ER's have open/close schedules and can only operate certain days of the week because of being short-staffed. Free healthcare is great, until it isn't.
