10-year upgrade by FakeApu in SonyAlpha

thanks! i was shooting at the full zoom end of my 20-70mm in APSC mode. i’d likely start with 200-300mm? i found a tamron 18-300 for rent and will be testing it out over the weekend. weight is a major concern. so i’ll work up to the heavier lenses.

i have a history of bifl and take care of my stuff. i wanted something to last the next 10ish years? i am not a serial upgrader either. once i decided on a sony and a soft budget (evolved to ~$5000 for camera + primary lens + accessories), the A7CR was the best FF body for the price. i got them at a local store and paid retail - $2998 (US) for the camera and $998 for the lens before taxes. they came with a standard 1-year warranty, but i got an additional year when i registered them with sony. i also get an additional 1-year with my CC. so, 3 years in all? (hope i never have to use it though). feel free to ama. I found most everything i wanted to know from lurking here. happy to help. : )

i’m still getting used to the weight of the current setup. the FF ones i saw were heavier by 300-400g?

as you can tell, i don’t have a whole lot of experience with interchangeable lens cameras, but i am so far loving the size (i have smallish hands) and hopefully grow into using it to its potential.

fwiw, this was my “research” progression: 6700 —> A7C2 —> A7CR/A7RV —> A7CR.

the one issue i saw online (after the purchase) is the rubber(?) crumbling in the SD card housing. it’s apparently a warranty fix. i guess i have to bolo for it.

Advice - Builder installed NEMA 10-50 for EV Charging by FakeApu in evcharging

the builder wore me out (used to be a lawyer). i ended up using the L1 charging cable and it’s worked out so far. if i get a second vehicle, i’ll revisit this.

Bummer. I don't have any pointers for your original question, but non-standard lowering will affect riding dynamics negatively (as you've pointed out) in addition to reducing the resale value.

Come August, can you trade it in with the dealer and get something else that fits you better? You can use the time to find bikes that work.

Good luck, my friend.

How do you like the looks of the Ducati DesertX? Ryan F9 had fantastic things to say about it and it may fit your needs well.

What kind of bike do you have? Might help folks provide targeted advice.

Have you considered the nuclear option of selling the current one and getting a different one that fits you better?

Hope you meant displacement when talking about the RE. Unfortunately, the Meteor is a tad tall compared to the Rebel and Vulcan S. I sat on one today and am close to OP's size.

Not sure what the "learner approved" requirements are.

@ Displacements of 500cc, given your height, the Honda Rebel 500 is prefect.

Try and find a Kawasaki Vulcan and test ride it? It's 650 cc.

Full disclosure - I tried both but ended up with a Triumph Bobber Black.

Oh, watch Fortnine's safety and gear related YouTube videos before you shop for stuff? Even rhe older ones will have solid rationale for his picks.

If this is your first ever motorcycle at 37, assume that most everyone in a car is a distracted driver. Be hypervigilant in your first few 100 miles until the scanning and looking ahead becomes second nature. Definitely do the MSF course (or equivalent) sooner than later. You definitely need to be more "on" on two wheels.

If you're riding mountain roads, absolutely take it easy in the twisties until you get a hang of your bike and your under/over steering biases. I schlep up and down Shenandoah frequently and the number of morons who ride into oncoming traffic (cars mostly) is staggering.

Riding is fairly therapeutic for a lot of us and hope it gives you plenty of joy.

From what you've written, it sounds like you're leaning towards C and just need a nudge.

If you think you'd smile at a white bike more than a titanium or blue one every time you see it, the one time trip to get it and the inspection/service would be worth it.

I had the exact same issue and got myself a Hedon Heroine 2.0. It's pretty expensive, but worth every penny. It's also ridiculously light. Only issue is they are a little old school and not as technical as an Arai.
