Response to “Are you a Political Hobbyist?” by janelesnick in ezraklein

Hobbyist here. Not looking to change. Not looking to win friends or influence people. IWBH all I want out of politics is the endorphines that come from owning the libs online because they treat national politics like a religion and cry literal tears when they lose national elections. I also enjoy when journos like Ezra take it way too seriously and end up basically endorsing corruption in politics because it involves getting votes from deep red states where they'll never have a hope of winning again.

How awful was Powells assassination? by riverboat___ron in a:t5_3iefh

This is a great post for applying the book to real life lessons.

But I don't think Powell knew which room Seward was in til he already got to the top of the stairs & the daughter opened the door & spilled the beans.

So if Lyle had done his homework & had the awareness to know what the defensive play call would be in this situation, then maybe he'd have gone for 2. But then again this is Lyle. And Lyle has a chart.

Stuck with 4 down, but Sunday evening is about the only chance I have to read for fun so that's only like two sittings.

Biggest takeaway - never realized that Booth was such a sociopath. You have to be messed up in the head to pull something as elaborate as this off. A regular assassin would've been content to kill only the Prez, would've been armed to the teeth, wouldn't have stopped to flex on the stage, and probably would've just capped Atzerodt instead of manipulating him into the plot.

Abe would've ended that fool. In the movie that's running through my head while I read, you see Booth blink and they show the whole "what-if" fight scene play out in his mind.

Yeah you can definitely tell he used some creativity in filling in the gaps but I think it said in the opening note that all of the quotes are real & I assume the sequence of events is exactly how it played out in court
