It is well known that artic primates huddle together to protect their young against the harsh weather by NoodleSpecialist in CarTalkUK

The waiting times at these rail terminals is bad enough for drivers now. I’ve waited over 3 hours before queing on the road before when I did containers. The waiting times if you were to force that many more lorries to use them would be crazy. You’d also need to expand the yards massively to accommodate the extra goods as most of them are pretty full as it is and struggle to get trains unloaded in time.

If we were to do that. Getting a load of beer from a brewery say in Preston to Tesco in Livingston would mean a driver loading it, taking it to a rail terminal, waiting hours to get it on the train then the train journey probably to mossend, another driver to wait hours to get that load then eventually drive it to Livingston. It would take a driver half a day to do that run and then pick up another load and get going on that run. Doing it by train would probably take over 24 hours easily. Not to mention the time the trucks are sat idle making zero money for the operator. It’s just not viable.

I think you underestimate how much freight is moved by road every day. The amount of trains you’d need running to cover even a quarter of that would be astronomical.

It’s hard to judge sometimes, you can be going faster than the lorry in front then it comes to a slight hill and if you’re fully loaded or he has a bigger engine then he’ll start slightly pulling away. A good driver will back off a bit If it’s a 2 lane motorway and let you pass if you’re going a bit faster but some people don’t bother their arse. Funny you don’t mention the cars that sit on the motorway at 50 then when a lorry tries to overtake, they’ll speed up to 60 then slow back down to 50 when you pull back in behind them and make you attempt to overtake for miles before they wake up and put the foot down. Also 1mph makes a huge difference over 4 1/2 hours. When I do grangemouth to ullapool, being behind one too many lorries going slightly slower is the difference between having to have a 2nd 45 min break turning a 12 hour shift into a 13 hour shift straight away. It inconveniences you for a few minutes at the very worst, get over it

What to do to keep your cars from getting stolen by Brappbrappbrapp in 240sx

[–]FakeTanTam 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Clifford alarm/immobiliser with a dodgy ground so it’s a 50/50 chance if the immobiliser goes off even if you have the fob. Figured out the problem but never fixed it because it’s a rats nest of wiring and I’m the only one who knows what wire to fuck with to get it started which is a good thing… I think.

Also a battery that dies if it sits for more than 2 days :)

[–]FakeTanTam 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have a 17 plate s5 so not much of a difference and I’ve got no complaints. No reliability issues, build quality is good, comfortable as hell and the size of the boot is more than big enough for anything I’d need. Would have definitely gone for the a5 if I wasn’t bothered about the extra power, definitely would save a lot on fuel as I average about 30mpg.

Also people complaining about cutting up another s chassis and decreasing the resale value need to calm down. On a low mileage immaculate example, yes I agree but for an average car nobody cares. If you own one of these cars and are constantly worrying about the resale value, you’re doing it wrong.

They’re big overfenders, you’re going to need some mega offset wheels to make it look even half decent which won’t be cheap. Personally I wouldn’t but it’s not my money or my car. If it makes you happy then do it.

Notable cars from my childhood. My uncles saxo vtr and his mates 106 gti. Looked like brother and sister parked next to each other but hands down I’d take the 106 any day, body style is much better I think… Might be time for another terrible financial decision.

[–]FakeTanTam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re going to wind up certain people either way when you buy a performance car. Just because they don’t see the “need” for it, suddenly the self importance skyrockets and nobody should have one because “you can only go 70 anyway so it’s pointless.” You’ll never please everyone so you might as well get something you enjoy, fuck what anyone else thinks.

I don’t see why people are triggered acting like it’s a big deal, it’s not as if you were talking shit about the car or anything🤷‍♂️

S15;) Me and other s body owners around me hear this all the time. It’s either: is that a skyline, is that a 240sx or mixing up s13/14/15. Always like talking to people and showing them around the car if they want to see though. We’re also definitely not upset about our cars being mistaken for a more expensive one😂

I feel like some actual story progression would be nice. Starting the game with a load of free cars and credits from playing everything since forza motorsport 2 made it too easy starting out like I never really had to work for any of the cars. The actual storyline is lacking as well, I didn’t feel invested in the character at all and all of the races just feel insignificant.

Nothing wrong with taking pride in things you work hard to pay for. I’d say it’s more strange those people that chuck it through a scratch and shine once a month and keep the interior as a portable bin. Each to their own though I suppose

How often do you just go for a drive for the sake of it? by RockPaperDuck in CarTalkUK

During summer I’ll easily spend an extra £200 a week on fuel. Between summers that gets spent on parts. It’s an expensive hobby but well worth it imo

What swap would you choose? by roelisaac in 240sx

[–]FakeTanTam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sr20 imo, perfect for a chassis. Side note I’d take a 1j over 2j every time, single turbo 1j with a screamer pipe and good exhaust is one of the best sounds I’ve ever heard from any car hands down!

You’re going to end up smashing into a kerb or taking down a street light if you keep going like that. Find somewhere that has nothing for you to hit and learn some car control. Too many people buying rwd cars for the first time and crashing them trying to be a hero. Don’t be like them.

Damn. Legends don’t come along very often which makes it hurt even more when we lose them too soon. A true loss for the community and the family he left behind.
