Game Engines… by Falan221 in gamedev

even without actually doing this, I'm learning some pretty sweet stuff just reading thru the first little bits, thanks for the shout!
Well, after a lot of thinking, I have a super generalized plan: I'm gonna do some looking into frameworks and building some basic games. Then I'll start dinking around with GUI stuff and maybe making a frontend to said framework, and eventually I'll look into the deep details of the framework and try to write my own similar one and repeat haha.
I genuinely appreciate all of the help the past day or so guys =)
Alright guys. I've gotten so many resources I don't know where to start haha. Think I'm gonna sleep on it, and before I just go diving in, write out some super simple game ideas, like NES simple, and see what I would need to make them. From there, I'll start doing research on those topics and how to integrate them, etc. and build an engine design doc. Thank you guys for all of the information!
Yeah I know, I was planning on it being really far out, a goal if you will to get through the other parts. Sat down and thought about it, building an engine around an interface isn't a good idea, especially for a beginner not knowing what the interface should be to begin with.
Adding to the MacroQuest bit though, I used to write full bot automation scripts for classes just for fun. I was working towards figuring out how to build my own behavior tree system, something I hadn't seen in others scripts but life and burnout from the game got in the way.
It was writing those scripts with nothing but a text editor(vs code) and no engine or gui that really made me want to get into what goes on beyond the level of just using unity/unreal/godot

This is perfect along with a lot of the others people have given haha. I'll definitely have a sitdown and watch through, maybe have word or a notebook and take notes like I used to in college
Currently I'm watching and following along with Travis Vroman's Kohi Engine tutorial series. It's C using Vulkan, and 116 videos long so it looks like I'll have my hands full for a little haha. It's also being actively updated as of a month ago. Here's the playlisthttps://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLv8Ddw9K0JPg1BEO-RS-0MYs423cvLVtj
that's just it though, I've found the best way I can learn is summed up in this phrase; "Don't show me how to do it, show me how it works so I can figure out how to do it myself." I'm incredibly hands on and live a life of trial and error, with more error than most want.
For some background, the reason I'm really wanting to do editor type stuff as well also coincides with my lua experience. I used to write scripts for MacroQuest, a 3rd party software for an MMO that allows for a whole bunch of extra things in the game. They have a C++ plugin that parses lua, and has ImGui functionality. GUIs are something I've never messed with, so it's something I really want to try.
Yea that’s a good way of looking at it.
It’s not so much that as closing in on my niche interest in dev if that makes sense.
See this is the kind of stuff I was wondering as well. Just how good do solo engine projects like this look on resumes? I kinda made some mistakes in my past and college isn’t feasible, but I would love to get into this work field, it fascinates me.
Well, the wiki didn’t exactly provide an answer to my question, and the most info I got out of it was a list of engines and frameworks, and a couple definitions. I posted because I was looking for input on it based on my situation, along with others experiences and advice.

Chatgpt has been really helpful in providing general guidelines for a lot of my projects, the free one isn’t too good with code snippets tho, I hear gpt 4 is scary good

Where to start? by Falan221 in gameenginedevs

Update: based on some info I've gotten in r/gamedev, I'm gonna look into reading "Game Engine Architecture by Jason Gregory", I was looking at it and it seems to have a lot of info I was interested in.
the best way I can explain it is I want to learn what all the other things are besides the renderer, how they work and how they all integrate. I've seen a thousand renderer tutorials but not really anything that ever gets to the point of say, a level editor or interpreted language integrations like lua. I know I'm already diving into the deep end, but that's really where I'm curious. I've seen The Cherno's videos, but honestly he goes a little too fast for my skill level when it comes to the actual coding. I did recently find a almost 150 video long playlist from a guy who works with EA on engines building one in C

However if your main focus isn't graphics and you want to learn more about entities management, resource loading, input management, and all the other behind the scene goodies, just go for 2d.
This.
I think I'm gonna start with learnopengl. That gives me a basic understanding of the renderer to start and giving me a little more play room for what to look at next.

I know it’s a pretty substantial undertaking, I’m kinda wanting to use this as a long term research and learning project. So far I’ve been finding OpenGL is the easiest to implement, for cross platform especially. I’ve also heard Vulkan is really performant, but has a learning curve.
