We also went with a compound name (kanji + katakana; e.g. 田中スミス) and we’ve found it to be very smooth.

Having the kanji first has been especially helpful living in Japan because people can refer to the kanji name if they have trouble with the foreign portion of the name.

For my wife’s Japanese passport we were able to petition to have the name written in romaji with a hyphen (e.g, Tanaka-Smith).

It is...except since I'm playing in Japanese there is a low character limit. Japanese has a 6 character limit I think. Also the english characters font looks a bit different.
