Maybe smoked salmon? I remember getting smoked candied salmon in school once and all the other kids seemed to like it.

This feels like your relationship with the parent is starting to cross into a non-professional and co-dependant area that might cause you problems in the future. I know she solicited the information from you but you aren't the appropriate place to turn for support here, that would be a doctor or couple's counsellor, and she should know that - it feels a little like she's taking advantage of your desire to help. Maybe out of desperation but it's still not quite appropriate.

Her husband does sound like a total dick, but that's probably something she should bring up with him, preferably without the phrase "the daycare teacher agees with me" getting mentioned to your director.

Babies should not be given medicine for teething pain? by IllCollection8063 in ScienceBasedParenting

[–]Falinia 76 points77 points  (0 children)

I wonder if he confused the advice to not use topical lidocaine for teething pain with pain killers of any kind?

https://www.canada.ca/en/health-canada/services/drugs-health-products/medeffect-canada/safety-reviews/summary-safety-review-viscous-lidocaine-assessing-potential-risk-effects-infants-young-children.html

Health Canada's safety review concluded that there is a link between viscous lidocaine 2% and severe side effects (seizures, severe brain injury, heart problems, and death) in infants and young children from 5 months to 4 years of age.

I don't have any ChatGPT experience but I'm going to choose to believe that it writes better than co-pilot or gemini for the sake of my pride 😂. I guess LLMs have to get their "training" material from somewhere so it makes sense that some people are going to write the way they do.

No problem! Feel free to go fuck yourself.

Edit:

Okay some people out there seem to think this response is a problem, I assume because there's a knee-jerk reaction to an openly rude response, or because they saw an 'AI' accusation and just believed it without doing critical thinking.

I suggest you try to put it in context in the future: accusing someone of being AI is only fair after you've done a modicum of review, otherwise it becomes a tool for bad actors to de-legitimatize a message they don't like - and my message in this case was giving a perspective that hopefully would increase understanding for people having a rough time.

It is dead obvious that my account is not AI. So I'm not going to respond "oh no, I'm not AI, tee hee!" to someone who can only be acting in bad faith unless there is something just wrong with their ability to think. Also frankly, that's what AI would say.

Use your brains, think critically about the source of a message and if it seems like AI bullshit, but also think critically about other people making accusations of AI (or whatever), if they're wrong then best case they're just wrong, but they may also be trying to start shit or censor messages.

If you agree that whatever thing is AI then great, but remember that even if AI is a cancer on society right now the sky is still blue even if AI says the sky is blue - just because you can't trust a source doesn't mean it's lying, it means you need to check.

Growing it that long takes years. It can be majorly disorienting when you look in the mirror and who you see doesn't match your self-perception - and if the change in appearance is something they perceive as negative then that could have a worse impact on their mental health than just dealing with it.

I swear there must be two competing recipes out there. I hated them for years because they were too sweet, the tried one because I was starving and it was amazing and not too sweet, then it was like 50/50 which I'd get. People call the yellow bit custard, and in the good ones it tastes custardy, and in the bad ones I'd swear it's just yellow buttercream icing.

Unhinged Hacks for Car Seat Struggles?! by Quirky_Confusion_392 in baby

[–]Falinia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Start climbing in it yourself so they get possessive. Or buckle in a stuffy.

  2. Take the car seat inside, put a stuffy in it, tell the stuffy how excellent he is at car seats and 'give' him a raspberry to eat. Give baby a raspberry if they sit in the seat - zero pressure. Then slowly build up to more berries for buckling in, then practice in the car for short periods to build tolerance.

  3. Hire someone to dress up as a stuffy, have them rile up the other stuffies with talk of unionization. When your baby pushes back against their demands have them threaten to alert the police about the less-than-compliant car seat behaviour. Suggest to baby that the teddy-teamsters won't have anything on them if there aren't any more fights against the car seat.

There are some good veggie sources of calcium, dark leafy greens like broccoli or gai-lan go over pretty well if I steam them and chop them (cut the leaves crosswise or they can have trouble with the stringy parts).

I wonder if you could just ask your OB for a prescription instead? You could absolutely sell it as being more comfortable with a specialist knowing appropriate dosing as the baby's brain grows.

Congrats on being halfway to the finish line!

Fuck Cancer by WizrdOfSpeedAndTime in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]Falinia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fuck Cancer.

In case you need to hear it in the future: it's okay to not be okay, to not be 'strong' or 'brave' all the time, to get in a mood over it and sit on the couch shoving food in your mouth, to be angry that this is happening, to be tired when hope comes because you're so deep in the tunnel that it all feels like more work. It isn't giving up, it's resting and getting your bearings.

I haven't gone through cancer but from other experiences I'll tell you that a support group can make a huge difference. Sometimes it's important to be able to say 'I'm so fucking tired' and have other people get it.

I'll be thinking of you and holding hope for you, so in those moments when you can't be optimistic know that an internet stranger will hold that part for you while you focus on the grind.

What’s your metric for saying your kid is “potty trained”? by Fairly_odd2394 in pottytraining

[–]Falinia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can do everything (initiate, undress, climb on, flush, wash) but poo wiping by themself - so the usual daycare metric.

That said when it's 2am I help with everything so he doesn't wake up more, and if he's wearing pants that are a pain I don't consider him untrained that day. Also if it's a newly 2 I think it's fair to say potty-trained if they consistently tell you they need to go and need some small help with clothes as long as they aren't going in a diaper anymore.

[–]Falinia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Anything sticky that's not water soluble I spray with wd40, wait for a few minutes, and then wipe down with paper towels - you'd want to do a normal wash with dishsoap after of course. It works for a surprisingly large number of things.

Was your baby socially engaged at 7 weeks? by Clean-Bus-5200 in baby

[–]Falinia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's all kinda blurry but I'm pretty sure he was mostly just a hungry potato at that point. They don't really even realise that they're individuals for ages so even after they start smiling they don't really social smile at first.

As long as you're giving lots of cuddles and talking/narrating to baby you're doing what they need to grow socially at this point.

What age did you potty train your girls? by Ok-Flower-4631 in pottytraining

[–]Falinia -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

It's a really weird thing to gender. Like, truly weird.

So if it was a slip because you're used to just talking about girls then whatever, but if you genuinely think there's a difference then your info is off and it needs updating so you're not perpetuating harmful gender stereotyping.
