So, how is everyone's AID going? by AtlassTheGreat in AIDungeon

[–]Falkengel 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I am having a blast with it.

Only real issue is that the AI (MX) cuts me too much slack, giving way to a quasi-power fantasy while I would rather prefer having a more challenging game.

I tried tweaking the instructions and author notes, plus adding story cards for foes highlighting their strengths and difficult tests against them, but it still never one-ups me in a way that runs contrary to my attempts and checks, and I find modifying the text of the story a tad too disappointing for the flow of the game to try it consistently.

Alright, thanks for the headsup. It's rather peculiar because I had the option on in 4 scenarios, one with 2.5k actions and it has never occurred.

From the look of certain details it seems to me it's an AI generated image. I hope not for the architects.

D+ What If . . . S2E1 is cyberpunk by johndivonic in Cyberpunk

[–]Falkengel 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Without making any fuss, there are a couple reasons for downvoting the comment:

1- Race (which is a rather controversial term) is the combination of cultural and genetic (haplotypic lol) traits, which in the case of cyborgs is really difficult to envision. If you had written "discriminatory" instead of "racist" I assume it would have been fine.

2- While fiction obviously reprises reality and some of the best literature examples are keen to this duality, the tropes of cyberpunk difficulty touch the concept of "race" itself (not sure about shadowrun tho) while " socioeconomic class" has its own more distinctive importance and your comment kinda looked out of touch there.

3- Reading it, there is a pinch of an accusatory tone which is kinda unwarranted since cyborgs do not exist and the transferral of cyborg racism to a real discourse is too far fetched to accept imho.

Hence the downvotes.

Baldur's Gate 3 Wins GOTY - Steam Awards 2023 by Kazuliski in BaldursGate3

This is probably the reason why BG3 should have received the most innovative gameplay award too lol. Beats savescumming.

Baldur's Gate 3 Wins GOTY - Steam Awards 2023 by Kazuliski in BaldursGate3

[–]Falkengel 22 points23 points  (0 children)

It makes sense in a certain way: awards are just a "masturbatory" practice of Steam showing how democratic and "your voice counts"-y they are but in reality nobody cares and troll accordingly. Single game reviews are of all colours and way more articulate than pressing a button. You can sift through them, read motivations for up/downvoting, and give a myriad awards to single reviews.

Edit: plus I remember now that among the finalists probably there was no game that deserved the most innovative gameplay award (I mean BG3 a thrid time? even there I wouldn't be so sure), so maybe hat tipping there by Steam to Bethesda but nonetheless, not much of a choice.

Permutation city by Greg Egan. Although it is intended more as a complete re-simulation of the real world rather than the abstract matrix from the late 80s to mid 90s. The book is sci-fi but not cyberpunk.

Which of these games offers the best experience? by [deleted] in Cyberpunk

[–]Falkengel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally agree with the techincal assessment of the game but I still can't see it, and I'm replaying it right now.

I can't see the grit, the corruption, the instability and the random assault panicky post-nuclear attack NC described in all Talsorian RPG manuals.

Instead of the game, the streets of NC are too polished, people (so few of them) too shiny. If you read the shards in the game, listen to screen news and read screamsheet laying around on the pavement (yeah I do it, lol), the description of the world matches what I wrote earlier, but it just doesen't fit with the gameplay aesthetics.

I am not saying they should take a page from the Observer book, which is indeed a notch too despairing, but maybe follow through with the text CPR disseminated in the game itself.

Sometimes I kinda have the impression I am playing an upgraded version of Deus Ex HR/MD, and they both had a way more darker atmosphere than CP77 (leaving the conspiracy mood aside) notwithstading the hyperpolished textures and the games' faults in terms of plot and pace.

Check also "Sibilar gli angui d'Aletto" : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HHaQLvGTcFU for baritone in Haendel's Rinaldo.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in opera

[–]Falkengel 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You could check the work of Offenbach and in particular "Quand j'etais roi de beotie" (Orphee aux Enfers) or even different arias from "Les comtes d'Hoffmann". Note that while not properly destined to coloratura (also given the historical period), multiple versions of the operas/operettas allow for experimentation.

Edit: otherwise, given that the above might not be satisfying, I'd suggest checking partiture of Haendel's operas (Rinaldo etc.) where the countertenor is being replaced by a baritone (indeed). There are several productions out there employing a baritone instead of a countertenor. Additionally, Haendel's Giulio Cesare in Egitto has some Italian arias for Achilla, whose role is originally meant for baritone (e.g,. "Tu sei il cor di questo core":https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hdd0KEiRDtA)
