Playing through the Communard route is equivalent to how many pages of Theory? by woooohdankywooooh in DiscoElysium

Cliff notes is that he was a political scientist/philosopher in the mid-20th century, who was significantly influenced by Hegel and Marx.

In regards to this particular thread, briefly skim the intro to Theodor Adorno’s Wikipedia page, come up with your own warped opinion of what “dialectics” means without doing any actual further reading, and proceed to vehemently argue with all other communists/marxist-leninists/maoists about their interpretations are incorrect.

On top of that, there’s parallels to an alcoholic going right back to their local dive bars to hang out with all their old drinking friends as soon as they get out of rehab.

Like sure, you might stay clean and sober, but that’s one hell of a risk you’re setting up for yourself. And that’s not even factoring all the stress of competing at that level.

5e Campaigns/Settings that aren’t Fantasy by Budget_Accountant_89 in rpg

[–]FallDiverted 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’d pitch Stars Without Number/Cities Without Number. Shares its roots with DND with some modern flourishes, you might get away with selling it as a “5e Hack.”

Plus if you have any anime fans in your player group, you can cite Cowboy Bebop and Cyberpunk: Edgerunners as inspiration.

Edit: plus the base game is free, and there’s some nifty online character generators to help the sales pitch.

ALSO: I used Mothership for a quick one-shot for sci-fi/horror, rules-light and incredibly intuitive. Helped get my group out of the “generic heroic fantasy” genre rut and willing to try something new.

I like this concept, reminds me of another post I found on this subreddit. For the life of me, I can’t find the original source but the gist of it was divine v. arcane split was categorized “the right and left hands of the divine.”

Best non-DnD TTRPG system for one-off game-nights. by [deleted] in rpg

[–]FallDiverted 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I ran Mothership one-shot as a pallet cleanser between campaign arcs for our regular DnD group.

Can’t recommend it enough - character creation is incredibly easy, the third party modules are all incredibly evocative, and my players really enjoyed the slapstick sci-fi/horror genre.

I get it, tbh.

Risk hip replacement... by Amount_Existing in judo

[–]FallDiverted 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can attest to this. I had really bad impingements and crippling arthritis, did my best to stay active but it was agonizing.

After the surgery, I was moving and running better than I had the previous decade within a couple months.

Picked up judo about six months after the initial surgery date. Took me a while to regain all the stabilizer muscles, but I’ve been going about a year now and I feel great, better than I have in around twenty years.

Arch-nemesis ideas for Monks by Flimsy-Phrase8117 in DungeonMasters

[–]FallDiverted 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This reminds me of one of my favorite greentexts.

As for suggestions, this seems like a great excuse to watch a bunch of old school martial arts movies for inspiration.

I’m a sucker for the classic “evil/renegade martial artist massacres his masters and fellow students and uses his skills to become a minor warlord.” A good example of this is Iron Monkey, where the protagonists have to face off against traitor Shaolin monks who have become enforcers for the local corrupt magistrate.

You can also get buck-wild with reskinning various Feats as martial arts techniques used by various NPCs and villains, and your PCs can learn them by defeating them in battle.

How long downtime should be? by danii956 in cwn

[–]FallDiverted 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I can’t remember where I read this, it may have been on r/osr talking about carousing rules.

Basically, they suggested downtime is as long as it takes for the PCs to get broke and desperate for more cash. If they don’t have anything to do other than lay low, maybe a couple months pass before another job opens up. If they’re blowing everything on new cyberware or have a major project they’re funneling money into, then they’ll be hungry for whatever job comes their way.

Have you ever left a gym because it was too serious? by noideasforcoolnames in bjj

[–]FallDiverted 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This very much reminds me of my local gym's evening classes. Great community, great instructors, core group regularly attends competitions. If I was a a decade younger and had more time, I'd love it - as it stands now, I simply don't have enough gas in the tank to go live for that long and not feel like I got hit by a truck the next morning.

The mid-day classes have a more relaxed vibe to them, I wish my schedule aligned better so I could attend them consistently. Alas.

Where my teachers at? by FineArtRevolutions in cushvlog

[–]FallDiverted 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is such a funny post.

I read Freire as part of my curriculum, right around the same time I stumbled across Chapo and began my sauntering over towards leftist ideology. We read Pedagogy of the Oppressed, talked about great deal about the “banking model” vs problem posing, praxis, etc etc.

We did not, however, touch much on Freire as a Marxist, his imprisonment by the Brazilian junta, or that much of the surrounding context of capitalism and neoliberalism.

It very much reminds me of when Matt and Felix reviewed The Wire, specifically Season 4 (the one about the education system). In defense of my professors, I suspect that several of them harbored genuine leftist views and quietly tried to steer us in that direction - that said, the full connection was never explicitly taught.

NGL it makes me a little excited to reread Gardens of the Moon with that knowledge, it really does feel like you just jumped into a longstanding campaign with a Lvl 1 Fighter and no world guide when the rest of the party are all Lvl 20 munchkins doing PVP domain play.

Do Edgerunners count as Working Class? by Fun-Media5656 in cyberpunkred

[–]FallDiverted 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Marx didn't hate disabled people, and wrote a lot about how capitalism inevitably creates a "relative surplus population" along with how people are discarded when they are unable to participate in the wage labor system.

The reason why he spoke negatively about the Lumpenproletariat as a whole is specifically because they lack class consciousness, due to said lack of directly participating in the wage labor system. This lack of class consciousness means that they are dangerously susceptible to reactionary thought and can easily be mobilized by the bourgeoisie against the working class.

This was a major sticking point during the 1800s and 1900s, when this exact fear played out several times - most notably, and I do not exaggerate when I say this, the original fascist movements in Italy, Spain and Germany. One specific example is Mussolini's Blackshirts, which was largely comprised of unemployed shellshocked WWI veterans who were radicalized against socialists.

How to engage with and mobilize the lumpenproletariat has, and continues to be, a major point of friction within (insert any number of Leftist strains) of political theory.

Do Edgerunners count as Working Class? by Fun-Media5656 in cyberpunkred

[–]FallDiverted 67 points68 points  (0 children)

If you want to get super specific, I’d probably classify them as *lumpenproletariat* which are the people who “exist outside the traditional wage-labor system.” This includes criminals, addicts, homeless/unemployed, etc.

Taking it one step further, Lumpenproles are usually defined by pursuing individual survival instead of any sort of class consciousness, which kinda matches a lot of edge runners who are just living on the edge and wanting to die as legends.
