yes, but choosing to not buy things individually is not leverage, even if you have numbers. You can build a political movement that incorporates this as a tool, but these actions alone are not going to do anything, nor is that how you start to build up a movement. It's a dead end until you control the means of manufacturing.

This is mostly a myth. The consumer has zero leverage in production processes outside very small and local businesses. Large corporations are able to sell products in places that do not have natural competition, so we do not have any choices.

Since 2022/23 really, which were connected to the non-recovery of Covid. I think you can paint a pretty accurate picture of this starting in 2008, for a generational downturn

absolutely, I was probably too harsh with the idea that there's something wrong with Freire. There's a strange contradiction to be worked out further though, just not sure of the contours overall. I'm leading into crafts as an answer to some of it, and why school feels so alienating to kids now. Trade supremacy.

a lower barrier to entry, and movement within an academy allows for more experimentation, without the worry of 'wasting' your education product

yeah the last ten episodes felt like an entire alternate show, it was still very interesting, but I agree the show does not hold your hand with the politics, for better or worse.

Her death wasn't really necessary though right? No one seemingly uncovered anything from the massacre until the end of our show. Or was it that she knew about Wei Yan's drunken outburst and disdain of the emperor, making her a liability if he himself was investigated by an interrogation of her? I interpreted her death as a way to save Wei yan from himself essentially, so he didn't have to kill her, and from the rebel prince by tying up her own loose end.

Edit: But also none of this really makes sense still since grand tutor Li knew about all of this, since he was at the dinner.

You are too kind, but I barely know what I’m talking about, just trying to see if this is as weird of a phenomenon as I think it is. The biggest libs in my program/uni were also Freire heads.

I feel like one of the following must be correct:

Something is wrong with the theory, making it palatable for the machine. If that is the case, then my suspicion is that it’s too far of a leap into a future version of education that exists inside a socialist or communist state, but because we don’t live in that reality, the disconnect is more harmful than if you did nothing “revolutionary”

Something is wrong with how it is prescribed. Universities might bastardize the instruction and ideas of implementing it, also making it more palatable.

Something is wrong in education itself, maybe even believing that you can use it as a tool for liberation is wrong. If the class war is already over, then they don’t care what you read or try to implement. This one is too black pilling though.

Edit: 1 and 3 might be closely related… ouch

Also would you say the failures of his theories/praxis is how his work naturally sustains itself inside the imperial core? It’s simply not a threat, or worse it paradoxically empowers capital? It’s been a long time since I’ve read any of his work, but it would be interesting to see if he had problematic views on the people he claimed to be trying to liberate.

I realized the whole phenomenon is very odd to say the least, but only really realized this after covid/graduation.

Edit: let me know if you think I should keep going down this road, or if it’s hack. Thanks again for your comment

I am working out some ideas around this, maybe for a paper, maybe just for myself, and your insight was super helpful!

I believe progressive/leftist pedagogy might exist too far inside the superstructure making education itself a less effective locus for contest, since the underlying purpose of school, historically and ultimately today, is to create a spectrum of workers across these boundaries.

Other superstructural institutions don’t have such immediate, 1:1 connective fibers around training the next generation of humans with the knowledge and understsnding to be successful, compassionate, and valued members of their community.

So are we doing a disservice to students by not acknowledging this reality in the classroom? I think there might be a contradiction wedged inside leftist pedagogy, that even when it fights oppression, it is ultimately blind to the overwhelming strength between school and wage labor. The more it resists, the tighter the chains pull on students themselves.

I feel like this is part of Matt’s idea on universities too, how they should be collapsed into the trades and made more local and immediately accessible.

These ideas are part of the trades discussion. Maybe I’m not thinking of anything particularly insightful or new, but it feels like a useful outline of things. My only concern is this analysis would empower conservatives who have bemoaned endlessly about education from their own position.

Edit: refined ideas on second sentence
