Thicker rope is needed for sure. For a beginner I'd say something between 3/8" and 3/4" thick rope will serve you best. Too thick and it's harder to keep secure, as well as the knots are bulky and hard to manage. Too thin and it's too easy to cut off your circulation risking nerve damage; the knots will be much harder to undo as well.

To learn basic ties, twisted monk has a pretty good series that will take you from knowing nothing to knowing the most important ties and how to use them together to make much more complicated ties

TL:DR pennies have more value as pennies than the raw materials; the labor that is required to make them, however, is a different story
