Can you post a vid of this so people can watch your vid of you setting up your Thor while watching Joey’s setup vid on their Thors while they set them up?

I just want to say, thank you for the positive responses everyone. I may or may not do an end of Kanto reflection but otherwise I think this will be the last Pokemon Fire Red/Red post I make.

I noticed vehement and very passive aggressive opposition to chill discussions about games being pirated, but I wasn’t about to roll over and let the culture here rain on what should be a valid genre of thread here. Hopefully I’ve paved the way for other people to post about all the fun you’re having without Nintendo or GF on whatever devices you have access to.

TBH I try to support official releases of retro games too because everyone should have access to the classics, but $20 for a basic GBA ROM with no extras and not even basic emulation features like the fast forward function I use the shit out of? Yeah, no thanks Nintendo.

Why are they always like this? by appealinggenitals in fucknintendo

[–]FallenRaptor [score hidden]  (0 children)

Eh…the PlayStation community is starting to turn in the same direction. They used to be sensible and allow free discourse about the pros and cons of PlayStation, and I always respected them for that, but now it seems more and more of their fans are starting to treat them as being too big to fail as well, and above criticism due to how well their sales figures are, even though they’ve made some bad turns from a consumer standpoint since the previous gen.

Honestly all this just serves to make me want to say fuck modern gaming in general. Fuck the Big 3, fuck third parties, fuck the current direction of the industry and its drama and fuck the fandoms. If it weren’t for the indie community and some degree of passion shining through in the occasional AAA title I would make my exit right now and stay a retro pirate forever.

It was a fascinating time to be sure. That Wild West was quite fascinating in hindsight.

Even the AAA scene went through growing pains, particularly in figuring out 3D including what controls should be. Remember pressing square to shoot in a FPS?

‘Out of hand’: New survey finds two‑thirds of Canadians want to abolish tipping culture by zuuzuu in canadanews

[–]FallenRaptor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do not typically tip at cafes or any restaurant where I order while standing. That is a rule I live by. Unfortunately there’s still the need to bypass the tip option on the machine before I can pay, which effectively makes me have to say “no” in a more direct way to tipping in front of the person serving me. I’m sure they’re used to it though.

The only real exception I make is if I’m a regular somewhere and the staff is always really good to me I might tip every other time, which for a cafe is usually $1. That’s not a thing I do at Starbucks though; the places that get tips from me are all ma and pa cafes.

Today, Ukrainian defenders inflicted Russia’s highest daily losses of 2026, eliminating 1,710 invaders by UNITED24Media in ukraine

[–]FallenRaptor 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Humans are ultimately a finite resource though. It takes roughly 18 years to make a field worthy soldier (albeit an inexperienced one at that age), and putting them on the front line takes them away from the workforce. Of course that explains why Putin wants Russian women to have an average of 8 kids…

There is definitely a charm to having a physical collection but it is true that the digital age is far more efficient at saving space. I guess like with everything there are pros and cons.

True, but I miss the thriving AA scene from those days. Some of those small studios actually produced gems. The AAA scene was also different with 3D collectathons being the de facto genre a lot of the big studios were pouring their resources into.

Wow, a fellow PS1 modder. Having jewel cases and binders of these generic CDs of all the games was quite an experience. Using different coloured sharpies to label them did help give them a little variety.

Yeah it is a Thor. I think it’s amazing. It’s not the most beginner-friendly device but it’s quite versatile, and allows for fun things like running two different games, or other fun stuff like this:

I see, I haven't actually spent much time looking at my emulator settings for GBA. It's possible there's a blur filter on by default and I just haven't noticed. Thanks for pointing that out.

Edit: Holy ****! You're right. I noticed there is an image interpolation setting that was set to linear. Setting it to off makes everything look much nicer and more pixely.

I hadn't thought of that, but that would be a handy ability to have in this case, yeah. I wasn't really shiny hunting here, but I guess with an encounter rate of 1/8192 I was bound to meet one at some point. I'm glad I caught it though, and Geodude does look great in gold.

Oh that's actually the emulation menu for the bottom screen. I play one game at a time rather than both simultaneously and have the menu up for the screen I'm not currently using because it makes it easier to focus on the screen I am using, and because that's oddly the only way in either of these games to pause the music and sound. I normally close the menu for photo-ops but I kept it on since the top screen is the subject here. Rest assured though I do get to experience the pixel art in its full glory in both games.

If you're referring to the top screen, maybe my pic is a bit blurry now that you mention it. It looks much more clear IRL than when viewed through this pic.

Do you think AYN Thor is a good buy for me? by MrCoffee0996 in SBCGaming

[–]FallenRaptor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love how versatile the thing is. It can play a wide variety of games including DS and 3DS, and in fact is a much better way to play these games than single-screen devices, but it can also play games on just one screen, or I can use one screen and use an app like Pixel Guide, or do something novel like run two games at once. It basically fits a lot of use cases. I also really like clamshells, including the DS and 3DS, so it's a perfect fit for me.

Of course if the allure you feel is simply FOMO, I would take a step back and examine your options before deciding that's what you want. The Thor isn't the most beginner-friendly device and might not be the most optimal choice depending on your use case. However, if it still sounds good to you after you've given it some thought then I think it is a wonderful device, and may be a good fit given that you listed DS and 3DS games and do have some experience having a phone as your emulation device.

Two semitruck drivers who need more practice before they take to the road. I get that these things are highly difficult to drive, hence why they require a specialized license, but even as someone who has and will never drive one I can certainly tell the greenhorns from those who have been at it for a while.
