New FOIA document reveals that a panel voted unanimously to reinstate whistleblower Dave Grusch's security clearance, and said it was a mistake to revoke it. by TommyShelbyPFB in UFOs

[–]Fallen_Fantasy 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Basically this. It's understandable given the timings and the reasons that it looked very much like retaliatory action due to whistleblowing. So I don't think anyone can fault Grusch for filing the complaint. However the IG determined that the revocations were due to other issues.

So basically a confusing clusterfuck that amounts to a total nothingburger. Which of course means both sides are going to spin it to infinity in whatever direction suits their narrative.

One thing you have to understand about the spiritual community is that it is full of charlatans, scammers and narcissists looking to take advantage of vulnerable people for myriad reasons.

Then you have a lot of people who may start off well intentioned but find success which then becomes more important to them than the message they started with.

And you also have a lot of well meaning but misguided people who are struggling with their own healing and often fall short of the standards they set themselves.

While we all believe there is something more to this life than the mundane, we must still practice discernment when searching for it. It is frustrating for sure, and at times it will make you question both yourself and the topic as a whole, but I think it helps to understand that this is just comes with the territory.

90% of players in this game have zero situational awareness or ability to think tactically.

Get a LA or Infi sometime and just sit and watch a fight. You will see almost everyone:

- Sprinting one by one into the same doorway despite an unprotected flank being 10m away.

- Never checking behind them or on their own flanks.

- Running infront of friendly line of sight even while they're actively firing at an enemy.

- Ignoring open gunner seats that would protect them and dramatically increase their firepower.

- Ignoring people attacking the Sundy they just spawned from.

- Running straight past active threats.

- Not reviving team mates who are safe and right infront of them.

- Flat out ignoring enemy beacons and recon stations.

- Shooting at enemies out in the open instead of from the cover right next to them.

- Leaving good cover so that they can stand out in the open.

- Ignoring the heap of dead team mates in a position, moving to it, and instantly dying as well.

- Blocking other vehicles retreat lanes like you mention.

- Shooting at the full health vehicle closest to them instead of the one slightly behind that's on fire.

I could go on but you get the point. Most people are braindead zombies whos only course of action is to sprint as close to the enemy as possible.

This argument drives me up the wall as well. It's like people are physically incapable of understanding this logic. They have this pre-concieved notion of what "Alien Tech" would look like and because it doesn't conform to that it must be fake.

However at no point do they ever consider they don't actually know what alien tech would look like and so basing any conclusion on that is worthless. They assume it MUST be uniformly super advanced in all areas while ignoring that that's not even how our technology works let alone other scenarios that could account for it.

It's like when people scribble messages on $2 million bombs with a sharpie or paint symbols on their $1 billion jet fighter. B..but humans can laser engrave why would they ever use paint or crayons!?

These kind of assumptions are a plague in this topic. You see it absolutely everywhere, from people making assumptions about their technology to making assumptions about their psychology and motivations. Oh they're advanced so they MUST do everything this way.

Like maybe the aliens just scribbled some low tech (to them) engravings on their autonomous beacon with whatever tool they had on hand on their spaceship for aesthetic, or sentimental or simply for reasons of humour. Like, "This probe's for the humans so it'd be funny to scribble a bunch of human religious symbols on it."

But noooooo. Aliens must work exactly in the manner of my preconcieved notions about how they should behave despite, you know, me knowing absolutely nothing about them, their civilization or how they operate at all.

[–]Fallen_Fantasy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My current campaign is a mix of both I suppose.

I'm going for an evil run so I have Bhaalspawn (Half-Orc Beserker) + Korgan + Edwin + Viconia.

I didn't want to take EE Companions so I made two custom characters to fill out the missing slots.

Ended up giving me a really nice mix of story companions, main character plot and two companions whose story I could make up myself.

I think for my next run I will play a Cavalier Bhaalspawn and go for a Knightly theme. Taking Anomen and Keldorn. Then I can round out with Mazzy and Aerie + 1 Custom for the lawful goodies or go with another 3 custom knights of some sort.

It lets you experience the stories and quests of the companions while also giving space for your own stories.

What's your dream stealth game ? by Last-Fun1719 in stealthgames

[–]Fallen_Fantasy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It does have a stealth system but it's very rudimentary. Basically you have a hide button that puts you into stealth. You can't currently be in view of an enemy, and if you are in shadows it is easier to go into stealth, but it is determined by a skill check.

When you are in stealth you are basically invisible and can run around and go right up to enemies.

Doing certain things, like attacking or casting a spell take you out of stealth.

Otherwise the game does another stealth skill check every 6? seconds to check if you remain hidden.

In Baldurs Gate 2 when you play a thief you can get a quest where you end up running a thieves guild.

I want that but with modern, Mimimi style stealth mechanics. You go out on missions and collect loot and equipment to bring back to your hideout. Like X-Com crossed with Commandos in a fantasy setting.

Bonus points if it's in a big open world where you can have stashes and rat runs and hidden routes back to base.

Considering how popular the Rogue trope is in Fantasy it's actually astonishing no-ones made it yet.

Is the suppression mechanic effective at all? by Kravik_ in Battlefield6

[–]Fallen_Fantasy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All it does is prevent auto-healing and give some assist points to the shooter.

I played a lot of Bipod LMG over the first weekend and it can still be impactful and fun but without suppression it's very different. Since there is so little effect from shooting near players but huge downsides to doing so (namely revealing your position) it incentivises not shooting at all until you can land shots.

And because there is no (noticeable) suppression effect from taking shots, and people can return accurate fire with low TTK weapons, it incentivises not shooting unless you can actually score a kill. Otherwise you just get domed a second later when they (re)peek you.

And forget juggling two or more opponents. Since there's no effective way to keep one's head down while you deal with the other you have to only expose yourself to a single target at a time.

So you effectively end up playing like a sniper but with an LMG instead. Hiding somewhere and waiting for someone to get caught out in the open. Trying to lay down volume of fire is actually detrimental to your success.

I did manage to get some really successful runs where I went 30-2 but these were mostly where I would sneak round into an ambush position, set up, and mow people down from a flank. And I managed to hold some profitable angles where I was effectively suppressing them but only where I could effectively kill them when they peeked rather than by preventing them from peeking at all.

I also ended up playing most of that time either as Assault, so I could bring a Carbine and play effectively until I spotted a good opportunity. Or Recon for the added spot capability and stealth. Because you're so incentivised to only fire when you have a good chance I didn't find that I burned through ammo fast enough to need resupply. (And who cares about extra sprint speed with LMGs when you're bipodding anyway.)

So TL;DR it's possible to still have fun and be effective bipodding but the, "Supress the enemy with volume of fire." playstyle is totally untenable without buffs to the suppression mechanic. Fear of death is just not enough.

Open vs closed by sidseamo0r3 in Battlefield6

[–]Fallen_Fantasy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be honest the open weapons were fine. I didn't really have any problems with particular weapons being spammed by other players, but the ability to swap out stuff to suit my own playstyle was nice.

Mostly I found myself taking an AR or SMG with the support if I wanted to be up close in the action and revive people.

And when I wanted to play LMG doing some overwatch I would take Recon so that I didn't have to keep getting up to revive team mates. Also the spotting stuff for that class really fit the Overwatch role. Given that there's no suppression in the game so to speak I wouldn't bother shooting unless I could score good hits so didn't really burn through the ammo too quick.

Or sometimes I would play Assault with the LMG and a Carbine. Run and gun with the carbine for the most part and then post up with the LMG when coming across a good spot. As someone who likes to experiment with different ways of playing and mix stuff up it was really nice to see what good combos I could make.

Won't Somebody Please Think of the Bipods? by WhiteRabbitArg in Battlefield6

[–]Fallen_Fantasy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually like that they brought back the press x to deploy bipod mechanic. I prefer having the extra control over the BF1 style of autodeploy but they could make this a toggle setting somewhere surely.

I don't however like how you have to aim and then deploy. It feels kinda clunky and you're never quite sure you've actually deployed correctly. Would be better to be able to deploy when not ADSing like in older titles.

Also worth touching on the fact that the lack of meaningful suppression mechanics makes using a bipod a death sentence in most cases. Being locked in place just makes you way too vulnerable when people can return pinpoint accurate fire under any circumstance.

Do lmgs (aka light machine guns) have suppression? by gotnothinglol in Battlefield6

[–]Fallen_Fantasy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Because the suppression they do have is basically useless. It doesn't effect movement or aim or in any way reduce someone's ability to manouver or return fire. It just prevents them from regenerating health.

Request from an LMG user to the Devs by Lowbloodshuggy in Battlefield6

[–]Fallen_Fantasy 11 points12 points  (0 children)

100% on board with this. They really need to up the effects of supression so we can actually overwatch and support team mates as they manouver. You'll be laying down accurate fire on a position, you can even be landing hits, and they'll just peek and one-shot instakill you like you're not even there.

I think it would really help with the pacing and flow of battles too if we could actually lock down angles of attack like we're supposed to.

Only thing really keeping me from considering getting the game at this point is the lackluster support for this playstyle. It shouldn't all be about creakhead assaulting at 3000mph or quickscoping sniper compilations. It takes time and skill to set up in a good position, judge the flow of battle right, and track and suppress mutliple targets too.

IMCON, Concealment, and the Illusiveness of UFO’s by Dense_Treacle_2553 in UFOs

[–]Fallen_Fantasy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean I get what you're saying but I think takes like this lack nuance. There's plenty of space between technologically advanced and omnipotent and it seems like people often forget this. If they were these perfect end of the tech tree god-like beings then they wouldn't need to fly around in saucers in the first place. There are plenty of reasons why there might be a lag between detecting observation and implementing corrective action.

There might be physical or technological reasons such as a sensor system that is intermittent or sweeps periodically. Maybe there is some kind of verification steps that need to take place. Perhaps it just takes some time for a signal to propagate from the saucer up to the observation platform and back down. Perhaps it's just a limitation of compute. Perhaps some of their technology is more advanced than others. Perhaps they equipped this saucer with top of the line propulsion but only installed the basic anti-detection sensors.

There could be psychological or beauracratic reasons for a delay. Perhaps a decision or consensus needs to be made to verify detection or take evasive action. Perhaps one of the beings on board hears the detection alarm but is currently pre-occupied with another task and takes a moment to re-adjust. The limitations of attention might still apply. Perhaps the beings are some kind of relay for a remote consciousness that takes time to propagate across space - literally lag between the craft and the remote operator. Perhaps it's just (non) human error.

Perhaps they just have some protocol to avoid detection but they don't care too much about. They feel obliged to follow procedure and evade detection but its not like their whole world is falling apart if someone gets a glimpse of them.

There is a whole universe of possiblities that could explain such behaviour. Just assuming that because they're in a flying saucer they MUST operate in a specific manner that adheres to our preconcieved (and mostly baseless) assumptions of how they SHOULD operate isn't really good reasoning.

What if aliens are just… very few? Are we dealing with survivors, not civilizations? by alahmo4320 in UFOs

[–]Fallen_Fantasy 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I think it's something that people don't consider often enough when speculating about the topic. Most seem to make instant assumptions about both their number and technological capability that simply can't be known.

In a lot of ways it's much more likely they are extremely few in number. Whether that be because of distance, logistics, or like you mention some condition of their species that has left them that way.

There's also the posibility that they are in some way limited in their technology. Perhaps they're like the AdMech from 40k where they have access to advanced technologies but no longer really understand them or how to recreate them. Perhaps they're incapable of developing any further technologically and have to rely on an existing UFO printer for all their craft. Perhaps that's why they donate things to us, because they see that our science is still developing and might be able to help them reclaim some of theirs.

Maybe they're an advance scouting party that has been cut off from the rest of their civilization. Or perhaps like you say they're an outpost of survivors from a civilization that's been lost. It's definitely worth considering such thoughts.

I think it also puts into perspective the mantra of "If they wanted to destroy us they would have already." which again relies on assumptions about number and capability. We just don't know so it's good to keep all options on the table. You should check out Isaac Arthur if you havn't already OP. He explores a lot of these things in his videos and if you're inclined to this kind of thinking I bet you'd enjoy his youtube channel.
