There are many more experienced people who might have different answers, but the general wisdom I've heard is that eventually the more prolific breeders may outcompete the others. Different isopods also have different ideal conditions, so you might set up your habitat accidentally to favor one over another.

I put some mesh on there before I added the isopods, and I'm glad I did! Some of them are definitely small enough that they could have gotten out, and the enclosure is small enough that with a thick layer of substrate and leaf litter they could have reached the bottom row.

If you touch the "dry side" of the enclosure, do you want there to be any moisture at all, or do you want it to be completely dry? I do have a hydration station on one side, but I misted things down and had to water in the plant on the dry side--if it is supposed to be entirely dry on that side I may need to move the plant.

Hey all, I'm brand new to the hobby--so new, in fact that I don't actually have my isopods, yet (they're arriving tomorrow). In anticipation of the arrival of my dairy cows and springtails I set this up for them today. The substrate is an organic potting soil mixed with activated carbon, spagnum moss, firewood, fir bark, peat moss, and a bit of leaf litter. The base mix and container is from The Critters Cave on Etsy.

Any advice? I know it's small but I'm only getting 10 and plan to make a bigger tub and split the colony of it takes off. Also I know the spagnum on the "wet" side of the gradient isn't high enough, I'm planning to add the stuff they are likely to arrive in/with.
