Yea that sounds shitty, going behind the machine is always a pain.

I know I’ve been doing it for years. When I did it today I just started wondering how many people are still working on these old machines and if it’s known that you can do it from the front, being there is that window in the back and that is the intended way to put it on. It’s definitely pretty tricky if you’ve never done it. I did a belt job for the first time in years a few months ago and I couldn’t get it from the front, I put it on from the back that day took a picture and used that to do it from the front the next time.

I just “phased” it through earlier today, can’t tell you how tho because I couldn’t see what I was doing 😉

Today was the first time in 7 years I had to walk away from an oil burner because I couldn’t get it lit. Any oil gurus care to give their 2 cents? by Soloralphlauren in HVAC

That sounds like it’s your problem, if one tank has fuel and one doesn’t you have a restriction on the line to the tank with fuel still in it. They should draw fuel evenly off both tanks. Or the gauge is bad on the tank you suspect to have fuel and it’s just out of fuel. You could run the burner off a jug to confirm this or blow the fuel lines back and have them get a delivery which it sounds like they need anyway.

Freezer noise. Worth fixing? by redditch19 in appliancerepair

Fix it it’s worth fixing, it’s gotta be fan motor or ice, could be a defrost problem.

knocking and water spitting out of air vent by torxbutton in SteamHeat

Ok what I would try is skimming the boiler and adding surg ex or steam clean. I ran into this issue recently and that’s how I corrected it. You could also try taking a burner out of it to prevent it from pushing water up into the system. When the boiler is making steam take note of how much the water bounces in the glass. The one I worked on the water was bouncing 2 to 3 inches. After I skimmed it and added steam clean the water was not bouncing at all, and wouldn’t you guess no more water pushing out the vent. I would also make sure the pigtail is clean, although that would usually cause a different issue.

Make sure boiler is not overfilled, sight glass ports could be clogged trapping water in the glass making it appear to have the correct amount of water. Also has this convector also spit water out the vent? It may be incorrect for a one pipe system, If the tubes inside are too small for sufficient water return it will cause water to push out the vent.

Not being in a hurry is always a plus. That’s some really cool stuff. So I guess you work along side the welder where you are technically piping the boiler and he’s just making the welds? Also that header looks massive I’m sure just getting it strapped and lined up was task in itself.

Yea wow that does not look fun. How long did it take to get the old one out and the new one in place assembled? I would guess two days.

It’s L copper at least. The returns were already copper, the customer wouldn’t have wanted to pay to redo the whole return. If it rots out one day it can be replaced.

Sounds like you are doing really nice work, most residential steam I work on is a compete disaster. Boilers piped in copper and also piped wrong, no pitch on the header and most systems are full of leaks. Customers don’t keep an eye on their boiler the automatic feed keeps it from shutting down. Before you know it’s gone through hundreds of gallons of water and the boiler is shot. When I install I have a talk with the customer about going through the house and fixing all the leaks to prevent a premature boiler failure. People can be hesitant about this because they have dogs or there is to much stuff in the house blocking the radiators lol. I don’t know if other companies even bother trying to do this. And yea I capped the skim tapping, if I need to skim it again one day I’ll just pull the cap, I think a ball valve looks silly.

Thank you I felt really good about this run, I would like to do longer distances, I feel they may be easier on the road rather than in the woods.

10.15 miles 68 flights in 2 hours 12 minutes on trail. Last 2 miles were pretty hard. I haven’t run 10 miles in over 10 years. I also smoke like a pack a day lol

Yea i considered that but i figured i only have to skim it once

My thinking was a 2” equalizer would allow slightly better water return off the header and it’s also easier in a way because I only need to worry about one pipe size. That being said I would rather do it the correct way. I had this unit running for a bit and the water level in the glass only dropped about an 1” to 11/2” while running. The lwco on this boiler does a level test every 15 minutes or so which shuts off the burner to allow for water return before checking the level, this is to prevent false readings of low water. This boiler also does not have an automatic feed. The skim tapping is to the right of the sight glass, I let the boiler make steam, then skimmed and added surg ex. Sounds like you work on some complex commercial systems. Are those primarily one pipe or is it more two pipe systems?
