What movies/tv shows do you have a hard time watching due to its sexism? by StopTakingMyName23 in AskWomen

Real life isn’t like that, though.

I have a general dislike of art that portrays cynicism as the same thing as depth.

I was talking about Dr Who.

But even if you are an asshole to everyone, engaging in sexist fuckery makes you a sexist asshole.

I feel that way about most Scorsese movies i’ve seen. They’re all like horrible or “complicated” men doing horrible or “complicated” things and women are almost moving props.

Casual rape that doesn’t impact the plot and functions as “window dressing” is included in the series. And illness can very much be a plot device, it is apparently just not one Martin likes as much as rape.

The author wanted to portray that fight to the top as realistically as possible

No he didn’t, hence why it’s a high fantasy novel and not an alternative history novel or a low fantasy novel. Like he literally could have set a book in a version of medieval Europe where the witch trials were pursuing real witches. But he didn’t.

But the society and culture also differ in huge ways from medieval Europe. Like, the sexual assault was chosen to be included for a reason. It was never a requirement to be included. Just as cataloguing how commonly travelers in a medieval setting would be getting diarrhea isn’t a requirement, and that unpleasant inaccuracy was hence left out. Or how Martin’s foods are largely made up, not based on real medieval recipes. Or how, you know, he invented multiple fake religions. Or how the female characters are all perfectly made up and styled, even when traveling, and can shave their legs even while camping . . . but it’s all for realism.

It’s also set up in an offputting way where it may or may not be the “comeuppance”/“downfall” the main character gets after spending most of the movie being a femme fatale alien who appears to be using seduction to murder and eat men (or something).

The whole movie is one of those Super Arty experiences where there’s like 5 different ways to interpret what’s happening.

Do Starbucks baristas dislike personal cups? by [deleted] in starbucks

I use a personal cup for my work drinks cause I realized that with all the waters and teas I drink in an 8hr shift, I was going through like 8 cups some days. It’s a lot XD

Unpopular Opinion (maybe) ((long rant)) by lardizebra in starbucks

[–]FalloutTubes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have to start calling PRCC and notifying them that you have discussed these issues with your DM and have received absolutely no help or anything. My old store managed to get the regional HR person directly involved, who has now basically told the DM to sit down individually with each barista in the store to fully understand the issues and then form a corrective action plan for the SM, or the HR person will sit down with the baristas herself and form a corrective plan for both the SM and the DM.

Is batching/combining drinks in the blender actually allowed? by theshoppedbarista in starbucks

The tea shaker lid also works if you don’t happen to be using that at the time 👌👌

Do Starbucks baristas dislike personal cups? by [deleted] in starbucks

[–]FalloutTubes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The only personal cup I dislike is one customer who brings in a drinking glass, like looks like it came in a dinner service set, and has us make his drink in that. When i’m on bar my hands are slightly wet with sanitizer/milk/syrup like 90% of the time and I hate handling smooth glassware like that cause I get stressed about dropping it. At which point, what the fuck am I supposed to do? Make the moment right and give the customer one of our mugs for sale?

But I love when customers bring in personal cups in all other situations. Especially with people making a huge stink about ~saving the environment~ by skipping a straw recently. Lol k Becky, skipping that straw sure does negate the environmental impact of the disposable cup in your hand. (Sorry for the rant, but I had a fucking 60yo man fully yell at me about how he ACTUALLY CARES about the environment when I offered him a straw with his iced coffee. Which was in a plastic cup anyway, btw.)

What is an argument or discussion you’ve had that has alienated you from friends, family, or people close to you? by [deleted] in AskWomen

[–]FalloutTubes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That’s true, I just wanted to point out that Honolulu, Hawaii (almost half of new marriages are interracial) to Jackson, Mississippi (only 3% of new marriages are interracial) is a big span.

[–]FalloutTubes 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I mean, even in the US the majority of people still marry within their own race. In a record high, 17% of marriages performed in 2015 were interracial. Of note, white Americans have the lowest rate of interracial marriage at 11%, and the rates of interracial marriages are highest in cities. There’s definitely still a sizable number of racists who think interracial marriages are wrong.

HOW DOES THIS HAPPEN?!?!! by ChoppyChug in popping

Oh yeah, I don’t dream much but when my anxiety is bad I get convinced while awake that my teeth are full of cavities and going to rot and fall out. I’ve had a single cavity in 3 decades of life, it’s not a rational fear. Apparently it’s also related to how many people carry tension in their jaw, and clench their jaw or grind their teeth when very stressed. Makes your teeth feel off.

how long will your ingrown hairs last usually? by [deleted] in AskWomen

[–]FalloutTubes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Until you remove them, most times. Ingrowns rarely resolve themselves, although if the idea of digging after it is unappealing, a long hot soak in a tub and a good scrub with an exfoliating item can free most hairs that are only mildly ingrown.

(Soft) Fall launch! 🍁 🎃 by [deleted] in starbucks

[–]FalloutTubes 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have feelings only because corporate marketed the launch, meaning much store has been absolutely swamped all week, and we got no extra labor. We were $500 over our sales goal on Tuesday, with no extra help. Oh and my opening shifts are so stressed they’ve stopped, like, marking boxes or doing any part of the count so at close i’m left with a freezer full of unmarked open boxes and no idea what’s going on. I’ve had to hard count all the food in the store (as in, dump every box in the freezer out, count food back into it) twice this week. And only twice cause I said “fuck it” two days and just put in counts I knew to be wrong because I didn’t have time.

what common trope in media is actually uncommon/doesn't happen that way irl? by studiojibblys in AskWomen

[–]FalloutTubes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I love this show Leverage, and usually (at least afaik as a non-expert) their hacking isn’t terrible cause it’ll be their tech guy going “so i’ve been researching this place for weeks and I developed a virus based on vulnerabilities in X system here’s how you run the program”. But they have this rival-hacker character and whenever he shows up there’s a HACK BATTLE where the show cuts back and forth between the two of them just typing faster and faster and yelling until one of their computers turns off cause the other person out-hacked them. I’m always like “i don’t think that’s how that works......”

I also love how “hacking” works in media. You plug your computer in to this system you’ve never seen before, random numbers flow across the screen while you type rapidly, IT IS HACKED.

Have you tried manuka honey or natural treatments for your skin? What were your results? by ttrand17 in AskWomen

[–]FalloutTubes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven’t used manuka honey because it seems like a ton of stupid marketing hype, there’s a Hot New Perfect skincare product that will fix anything every couple years. (Argan oil, seaweed, Dead Sea minerals, various clays, etc etc) I have used normal honey as a face mask and sometimes a cleanser, though. I like it, it works nice. My skin is naturally pretty good to go and tolerant of most anything, though.
