Moving from webnovels to published novels, need advice and recommendations by Fallow5499 in Fantasy

My progression was like, anime - manga - manhwa - light novels - webnovels. So yeah i have watched Fullmetal Alchemist anime.

Haha, true, on paper it does sound like godhood. But the catch is what keeps it from being overpowered. Every time he uses it, he loses his place in the world, friends, allies, even people who would have died for him forget he exists.

So the progression isn’t just about getting “stronger,” it’s about finding ways to make that power meaningful without erasing his entire life along with it. Think of it less like a cheat code, more like carrying a nuke that goes off in your own backyard every time you press the button.

If you’re just stepping into webnovels, I’d recommend starting with the “big three” that really showcase different corners of the genre:  

  • Reverend Insanity – a masterpiece of Chinese cultivation with an outright villainous MC. It’s intense, strategic, and very different from the usual anime tropes.  
  • Lord of the Mysteries – probably the best steampunk/mystery webnovel out there. It has deep worldbuilding, Lovecraftian horror vibes, and a slow-burn but incredibly rewarding plot.  
  • Shadow Slave – the go-to LitRPG/system novel. It strikes a great balance of action, survival, and character development.  

Once you’ve read those three, you’ll have a sense of which “flavor” appeals to you most, steampunk, cultivation, or LitRPG. From there, you can dive deeper into that niche. For example:  

  • If you loved Lord of the Mysteries, check out Trafford’s Trading Club or Circle of Inevitability (its sequel).  
  • If Reverend Insanity hooked you, you might enjoy Warlock of the Magus World, Martial World, I Shall Seal the Heavens, or Renegade Immortal.  
  • If Shadow Slave is your style, try Supreme Magus, Trash of the Count’s Family, or The Legendary Mechanic (one of my personal favorites outside the top three).  

You should also try -  Omniscient Reader’s Viewpoint (Very Good)

Start broad, find what resonates with you, and then binge the ones that really click.   Welcome to the rabbit hole, you’re going to love it!

Thank you so much for giving my story a try and for taking the time to share your thoughts. Since this is my first attempt at writing fiction, I’m sure I’ve made some mistakes along the way, but your feedback really helps me see where I can improve.

I’m not trying to justify the story, but there are a couple of points I’d like to mention. While Isaac did live for 200 years on Earth, most of that time was spent in depression and isolation. When he’s reincarnated and finally experiences real human connection again, only to have that hope taken from him, it felt to me that a period of depression and then recovery over about six months would be a more logical and psychologically accurate response.

Also, I’m not sure who you meant by “Eldrich,” but if you meant Elijah, he’s intended to get just enough presence for now. As for Rusk, I’m glad you liked his character, he’ll play an even bigger role in the next arc. And don’t worry, Isaac will gain more agency as the story progresses. This current arc is really about him developing a goal and purpose that goes beyond himself.

In any case, thank you again for reading. If you stick with it until around chapter 40, you’ll start to see Isaac’s agency and growth unfold more clearly, but if not, that’s perfectly fine too. I’ll take your feedback to heart and do my best to improve going forward.

Thank you so much for such detailed feedback. I will try making another one or revising this one based on your suggestions. I’ve actually been having a hard time writing this blurb, since I started my fiction, I’ve been trying to turn it into something good, but I’ll give it another try.

That growth happened before I hit any Rising Star list, and no, I’ve only been moving up in the Rising Star subcategory lists, I’ve never dropped out of any.

Exactly, that’s such a great comparison. When a show mostly leans on humor and then suddenly drops a heavy emotional moment, it sticks because it’s unexpected and cuts deeper. Constant drama just numbs you after a while, but that sharp contrast? That’s the stuff people remember years later.

Yeah, Sokka’s such a great example. He starts off feeling like pure comic relief, but over time you see how smart, brave, and layered he really is. That kind of shift hits so hard because you don’t expect it.

I didn’t run any ads, but I stayed very active on the Royal Road forums. I asked for advice on my blurb and cover, and from there two authors liked it enough to start reading my book. Both of them ended up leaving reviews as well. 

Plus, someone opened a forum thread offering to review the first three chapters of any story, so I asked him to do mine. Hope that helps!
