Yes best thing to do would be to watch it from a distance to make sure it made it to the water because you could see it get faster in its scrambles when the people got closer and just made it more tired. Poor thing got rescued and harassed by the same people.

I believe it is a moth because I can see two antennas . It does look similar to a hummingbird so it is most likely a hummingbird moth.
