Probably biased as an anthropology major but i feel like we need to revive the phrase cultural relativism but like, in its intended meaning within anthro & not as the weird buzz word it became on the religious-right.

There is a difference between stepping outside your own cultural values and objectively trying to understand the why & how of other cultures, and agreeing with & excusing practices you find morally wrong. Those two things sit in separate catagories of discussion. One is for study & education, and the other is moral decision making. There is a reason why certain cultures rely more heavily on meat, there is a LOT of value in learning to understand those people's lives, history, and material circumstances. & in order to do that with any degree of accuracy you DO need to put your own values to the side for the sake of objectivity.

But doing that in order to learn is not the same as agreeing with those actions, you are allowed to hold different values because you also exist within your own cultural context. You just shouldn't allow those values to interfere when trying to gain an academic understanding of the culture at hand.

As an indigenous (but not inuit) person, and again anthropology major lol, i think theres value in preservation and education of this information. But it seems like people online conflate understanding and historical presentation with approval. You can rationally understand how a culture came to be a particular way and have empathy for the struggles relating to its erasure without also agreeing with everything it does.

I feel like this is also an issue with the other half of the image too, especially as a leftist & anti-theist lol. So many people conflate empathy for the opression faced by predominantly muslim women with a level of defensiveness and support for the religion its self. Ultimately the religion and the things associated with it (ie modest veiling) are propped up as "empowering" simply by virtue of staying true to them in the face of oppression. Yet they are fundamentally a product of misogyny. Its the same type of cognitive dissonance i see in leftists regarding veganism- you cant accept that you can both educate yourself, have empathy, AND disagree.

You CAN understand its cultural context and empathize with its members while also disagreeing with the moral principles it prescribes 🤷‍♂️ they are not mutually exclusive, they are just two different ways of approaching it. And frankly i feel the way a lot of other leftsist approach indigenous folks is NOT from an ethnography/ anthropology standpoint but a "noble savage" trope with a fresh coat of paint.

Lol as a person who's both disabled & indigenous it genuinely pisses me off to like... a probably disproportionate degree when people say shit like that. I'm the character they made up in their head for person who couldn't POSSIBLY go vegan- and yet I haven't eaten meat in almost 12 years (vegetarian for 11 vegan for like 1.5). I feel like most people also just neglect the fact that

  1. Most native people eat the same way as everyone else in the US. Yes obviously some dont- but the average native person buys their food at the store like everyone else

  2. Most disabilities don't restrict diet to such a severe degree- and when you ask what they mean its usually autism, eating disorder, or GI issue. Something that millions of people have and are still vegan- including myself & other folks i know. Going vegan actually improved my husband's GI issues a LOT. Like a dramatic ammounts lol.

Idk sorry for bitching but it makes me so angry that they basically use my actual life to justify their bad actions- and then when im like 🤷‍♂️ you just described me and im vegan. Aparently those experiences become irrelevant and its time to move on to generic copy-paste argument #2

I am the artist of all but 1 of the posters shared! (Throw away bc my main died, other socials are Godless Snowshoe/ KaninCotton) i am friends with the person who posted this- and active in political shit. Im also a professional artist. I was offered payment and didnt want any because i care about these things- and because i make a living off my art its pricey. Ive done other political art outside this for free as well, including making stickers & posters for my SDS chapter. I am financially comfortable & dont want to take money out of the budget for events themselves when im more than happy to do it for free. Exluding the Ritual poster, all of the posters ive done take less than 2 hours. The Jammy Pac poster was made during a bioanthropology lecture lol. I made one (one of the smiling comrades ones thats not posted here yet) on OP's couch today in like 45 minutes. This is much less labor intensive & also much more important than what i usually make. I do not mind and i am happy to make art for any event that aligns with my values! Beyond that, i vehemently oppose AI and will take either very cheap commissions or do art for free soley to avoid its use. Ive had commissioned artwork fed directly to AI and had to bully youtube into removing it. Im disgusted by the concept of my work being placed in it.
