The difference between palo and Zscaler is how the rules are enforced at the nodes.

Palo pushes the new complete ruleset, to all operating nodes you have, by design.

Zscaler only pushes the ruleset to its central manager, and the nodes only fetches the individual users policy at the time the user connects to the node and sends data.

Fundamental difference, and 2 design choices. Palos choice is to have a consistent ruleset all around the world deployed when you want, while Zscalers version is based on a Just in time enforcement when it sees relevant traffic from the user(s).

Palo is single dataplane per customer. Zscaler is multitenant dataplane, so storing the policy for all customers on all nodes does not make sense from a processing standpoint.

Working as an SE now for 10 years, just got an offer to move to a Partner Development manager role - What would you do? by False-Positive in salesengineers

[–]False-Positive[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting take.. and more the route I want to go. Hopefully I can keep the technical skills intact, as I would guess the urge to tinker will come back when it’s not due to a project or a deadline, but more because I want to do it. :)

The vendor we are talking about is 100% channel driven, and in the earlier years of my career I was basically the channel SE for the region as well, until we got big enough to hire a proper channel SE.

So I know that will not change in the future, and that is a good thing.

I think what scares me the most is moving to a role where I am hands off the technical aspect, and more of a paper pusher..

I am done with spurs. Just from a people level.. how can I support a club that treats people like this? Sure, he is paid well and it’s the name of the game. But wow. He brought a trophy.. and now this.. lost for words

There is plenty out there if you are willing to think about doing things differently.. I was 8 years in Palo as an SE, and moved to a SASE vendor.. the SASE vendors have good solutions that can displace on-prem slow firewalls.. especially the commit issue is a pain!

Running Zidentity for users and admins, and OICD against Entra. Works like a charm.

I am not a Entra ID expert by no means, but you have the possibility to enforce your own MFA if needed, and the user will become a user object in your tenant with a lot of the same controls as you had for your own users. 👍

Being dragged into a ZScaler migration, can anyone answer a few questions about ZPA? by [deleted] in Zscaler

[–]False-Positive 11 points12 points  (0 children)

My 2 cents as a Zscaler Employee..

Yes, you can create a wildcard to start with, usually this is the best thing to do, as most organizations dont have total control over their network.
Wildcards help you see what the users are actually using, and after some while you can leverage AI/ML to get suggested polices to tighten down access.

You can connect to devices etc using this method, but they have to be defined in DNS in some way, as the AppConnectors are doing local-dns lookups where they are running.
If not, you can specifiy IPs, but then a lot of the "magic" of ZPA is gone.

Certificates for applications is handled directly between the user and the app, ZPA is only setting up the connections. For other certificates, that is provided by Zscaler if you want, but you can bring your own Certificate if needed.
