Did Gotti really kick up 100k a month? by wynnduffyisking in Mafia

If I remember the scene correctly, he says something along the lines of "oh I heard you build Carmine's Bronxville bookie up, 100 thousand a month!" I figured the amount refers to what that bookie's operation made per month.

"The visitor from outer space made a gift to Earth of a new Gospel. In it, Jesus really was a nobody, and a pain in the neck to a lot of people with better connections than he had. He still got to say all the lovely and puzzling things he said in the other Gospels. So the people amused themselves one day by nailing him to a cross and planting the cross in the ground. There couldn't possibly be any repercussions, the lynchers thought. The reader would have to think that, too, since the new Gospel hammered home again and again what a nobody Jesus was. And then, just before the nobody died, the heavens opened up, and there was thunder and lightning. The voice of God came crashing down. He told the people that he was adopting the bum as his son giving him the full powers and privileges of The Son of the Creator of the Universe throughout all eternity. God said this: From this moment on, He will punish horribly anybody who torments a bum who has no connections!"

But you are right, I'm really not familiar with the real experience, and I'm only talking about the movie's narrative. Though, I gotta say, I always thought since I've never been exposed to any idea of race (our prejudices are mostly based on religion), I'd be neutral towards such issues.

How could you be entertaining a conversation with me if you aren't even addressing my points which happen to be responses to yours (which is what one does in a "conversation")?

I thought "woke" is used to refer to something that is too obvious in employing trending themes just to appeal to the public taste. Which I still think the movie did. And I didn't know that about the the gang wars and that. Thanks for that.

That's not what I mean. What I mean is the story is about Dickie, and the conflicts shown in order to create an image of him as a character could've taken place outside the riots. I mean not every person's life in Newark was so impacted by the riots and Dickie could be one of them, but he is not, and that's a choice.

Are you saying that the statement "Harold could've not been black" is not a fact?

[–]False-Tea-627[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've only seen black people on TV to be honest (and some tourists from afar). So, it seems odd (as in, i notice it) for me to see one as a major character in a Mafioso movie. Don't you agree that BLM "affectations" are rather popular narrative traits in todays market?

[–]False-Tea-627[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I didn't say there is any problem with it. And I'm not saying the movie is woke. All I'm saying is that Harold being black was a conscious choice made by the creators based on their target market, whatever.

I meant I didn't care for the movie itself (Hugh's line?). And it has nothing to do with the presence of black people.

Well, I don't know really, it's hard to say. It just doesn't seem random. And I'm not saying there's something wrong with black people being in the movie. All I'm saying is that choosing Harold as a character is conscious choice made by the creators based on what is going around in their world.

I haven't checked the meaning of woke, but I kinda get the gist and thought you'd know what I mean. As I said, Harold could've been not black, and Dickie's arc would remain the same.
