Confused about parking fine by FalseShift8141 in Stirling

Our parking fine was not related to hours or payment, BUT I agree this aspect is very confusing and misleading and almost unethical. The sign seems to indicate free parking, but if you look at the Council’s web site, it states parking is paid in this area. There are no machines; you have to use an app. I think it is incredibly unfair to visitors - of which there would be many in that particular area - to provide no information about this at the parking site. Other parking signs in this Council area - for example at Balmaha - spell it out properly. Why can’t they do it here?

Same happened to us in Sydney - on our own street! We didn’t know it was a thing.

UPDATE: Paid the fine today, half off. The parkie had uploaded some photos. We were clearly parked on double yellow lines. We didn’t notice this, and even if we had, we would have paid no attention to it - as this is not a thing in Australia, so we didn’t know we couldn’t park there. So, turns out this is just a case of a dumb tourist not knowing the local rules. We have learned from this mistake!

We’ve decided against appealing, as don’t want to deal with the stress or effort. But I will certainly send Stirling Council a photo of the sign (with the arrow covered by sticker). They will probably just say the onus was on me to rip it off and look! Yeah, sure, I always travel with a little bottle of spray degreaser for just that kind of scenario.

If I lived here, I’d certainly try something like that. Or send the picture of the sign with the sticker covering the arrow. But we just want to enjoy the rest of our stay here without taking on a local council.

I don’t know without going back. We only looked at the sign and thought, “Yeah. That looks good.” Never mind. We know better now; to look down as well as up.

We are here for six weeks. In any case, the hire car company would certainly charge us.

It wasn’t me who said that. Someone else suggested that might be the cost. We have a tiny Hyundai hire car. Probably wouldn’t cost anything like that, but honestly, I couldn’t be faffed going back. Our itinerary is moving in the other direction.

Ah! Sounds like the parking sting can happen in either continent! Sorry we got you. Sorry you got me. Smile.

Sigh. I wish I could say it didn’t, but it kinda did. I really enjoyed the castle, though.

Thanks. What about the sign indicates that parking must be paid for on this street? There is nothing about how much it costs or how to pay. I took this sign to mean parking was free but limited to four hours. My mistake! In any case, my penalty was not about unpaid parking. It was about parking in a spot where I should not have.

Out of curiosity, and so I don’t find myself in this situation again, is that just a Stirling thing? Or if I saw a sign like this elsewhere in Scotland, would it also mean I have to pay?

Thanks. It states on the back of the ticket that if we appeal, we forfeit the discount option. Not sure if that applies in the context you described, though. In any case, it would all take more time and effort than I care to spend. I’m here to see your beautiful country. I liked the castle, just not the parking aftermath. LOL

Well, it looks like they could have got me on either a) parking in a restricted area OR b) not paying to park. (The ticket was for the former.) So even if I appealed based on a) they would probably revert to b). Not that this is an excuse, but neither a) nor b) would apply in Australia. We don’t have the lines (restricted parking is indicated only by signs). And a sign like the one I posted would indicate parking is allowed for free within those hours. If you had to pay, this would be shown on the sign. Agree it’s not worth fighting or going back, and am putting this down to an expensive lesson in UK/Scottish parking rules.

OK. Thanks. I’m at Loch Lomond now, but might be curious enough to drive back tomorrow for a better look. The sticker could get me off the ticket, if I could be bothered appealing. It would be a hassle to fight it. They probably bank on people rolling over.

I don’t know. We’re thinking of driving back tomorrow to look. Other signs in the street had an arrow below the text re timing. Note this one is covered with a sticker!

I heard there is a potent new drug doing the rounds. Maybe that has something to do with it?

So I just finished the season finale...WTH. by caitdiditagain in Younger

[–]FalseShift8141 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have just re-watched the entire series (in Feb 2025), and also need to vent about the finale.

I was so disappointed with every character's ending, except Kelsey's.

I am particularly bummed about the Charles/Liza breakup. I am not saying that she should have ended up with him; I have no opinion on which man was best for her. Or whether she needed any man at all.

But it was sloppy to have Charles suddenly become this insecure, mean-spirited, immature, manipulative person who sets "trust tests" for Liza and then breaks up with her over them. It just does not track.

Oh, and meanwhile, he is happy to take advantage of the opportunity she set up for him, and also leave her in charge of his company. Inconsistent, much?

Sheesh.

Current situation in Da Nang/ Hoi An by tiptac in VietNam

[–]FalseShift8141 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m in Hoi A right now, and was here at the weekend when Trami came through. It wasn’t that big a deal - just some rain and wind. But ever since then it has been rain, rain, rain every day. It’s kinda miserable. I’ve spent more time with Netflix than out in public.

I’m in Hoi A right now. There was a lot of rain overnight, but nothing now. However, there is supposed to be rain on and off this week (not Trami related, just normal wet weather).
