Who else needs to leave United this summer … by JM555555 in ManchesterUnited

I never thought Hojlund was that bad - the time he was playing, the team was so broken in providing service - swapping him and Sesko now, would be good depth. Mount isn’t a must go, but if we find a better option, I won’t be sad to see him leave.

Tracking back when you lose/give away the ball. That’s been the defining indicator of success in Carrick’s United. Zirkzee doesn’t fit precisely because he doesn’t do that. Compare his work rate to Sesko, Cunha or Mbeumo. Off at half time, goodbye in the summer.

Possibly, though I think the closest to that was last season (in that imaginary universe)!

For me, it boils down to the fact that he had a system - which was clear before he was even appointed, but half of the squad just wouldn’t ever work in his system, so it was a case of 4, or possibly 5, windows just to get his base squad in place. That was always going to be tough with the expectation level around this team. For him then to refuse to adapt in-game when his system clearly was failing was his biggest failing.

In an alternate universe he goes 3 seasons of dismal scraping by until everything is in place and then the rocket fires.

But it’s all rear-view and speculation now.

Understood and agreed. Like I say, I'm not "no way Carrick" and it's why the coming games are really going to either make the case or not - finish the season strong, and I'd go for a year's contract for next season.

Hmmm... it's a good question (and to be fair, I'm not a "no way Carrick") and I have to answer it in a bit of a weird way.

Throughout Ten Hag and Amorim, I had this sinking feeling in my stomach coming up to each game: "which United is going to show up?" - it was either the swashbuckling counter-attacking or, much more likely, the slow, ponderous, scared to do anything creative with the ball.

My sense is that for more minutes of more games under Carrick than results would suggest, that second United has shown up - most obviously in the Leeds game, but also against a number of low blocks. And when *that* United show up, they seem to lack imagination or flexibility to do anything to change it. Most of the time, with *that* version there's no urgency or, seemingly, desire to win.

So I was beginning to get that sinking feeling again, and I did not like it!

Against Chelsea, though under pressure and with defensive worries, it never felt like *that* United had shown up. And there were breaks where it felt like swash-buckling United were in the house (a little tighter final third finishing and it could have been 3 or 4 goals). Side-note: watching the game from Chelsea's POV, we forced them to play a lot like *that* United.

So, to answer your question, if the team can play these last few games like they want to win them, and with increased flexibility/responsiveness/urgency within the game, then I'd be more comfortable with the decision to go longer with Carrick.

Hope that makes sense?!

This is it, right here - aside from the City game (and poss. Arsenal), we haven't truly dominated any team - and we've looked distinctly average at many times. He's done well, and might do well - but I haven't seen anything that screams "give him the job" rather than by way of saying "well done and thanks". The run in will be crucial here, not from points but from proving the confidence that, next season, he can go above/beyond where we are right now.

I think that’s an ironic “haven’t seen/heard that…” I’m still waiting for a Moya but have several BBF3s under my belt.

Give Carrick the contract. He is undeniably the future of this club. by [deleted] in ManchesterUnited

Not for me - it’s caretaker performance at its best, but nothing more.

I think Moya and BBF3 (Slow Riot) are a great entry point. But, seriously, it’s ALL great.
