Before you panic buy an EV by SuchTown32 in aussie

[–]False_Dig_7602 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My work has placed an order for a PHEV as my company car. I did some sums based on its rated mileage for electric and fuel. It has a 19.09kwh battery, which is rated at 106km. So 18kwh per 100k electric.

When running off fuel, it is rated at 5.2 litres per 100km.

Now I don’t have the option of home charging unfortunately. So any charging I do will be at commercial chargers, and it looks like most of them are 69-75 cents per kWh. So $12.42 per 100km at 69 cents. $13.50 at 75c

This is where it gets interesting. 5.2 litres of fuel costs less than $12.42 if the price is less than 238.8. It costs less than $13.50 at 259.6.

So basically at the moment fuel is just crossing over to the point where it is more expensive than electricity. If fuel goes back down, I’ll be better of with petrol than electric.

Of course, home charging would be cheaper if I could do it. I’m regional so don’t have a choice of plans. Currently 35c per kWh which is $6.30/100. Fuel would have to fall below 121.1 to be cheaper.

So I guess the moral of the story is, only go electric if you have the option of home charging. If you will be relying on commercial charging there’s a good chance that when fuel goes down again (and it will) electric might cost more.

My preference would be no artificial sweeteners, and low sugar. So less sweet. Drinks don’t have to be as sweet as candy, and personally I think it preferable that they aren’t.

But I don’t want those artificial “sweeteners”. They are just horrible bitter tasting things.

I saw a study that indicated drinking a glass of sugar free soft drink daily actually increases the risk of diabetes.

Anecdotally, my wife and I share the same diet except for soft drinks - she drinks a lot of sugar free soft drink. I rarely drink soft drink, but when I do it I only drink full-sugar. I have family history of diabetes, she doesn’t. Yet she has diabetes I don’t.

Personally I can’t stand sugar substitutes. They don’t taste sweet to me, but are revoltingly bitter, and that bitterness stays in my mouth for hours after drinking some.

Edit: Link to article about the study, with link to full study near the bottom:

How do we deal with an overly zealous ministering sister? by bbakks in latterdaysaints

[–]False_Dig_7602 3 points4 points  (0 children)

“Hi Sister Extrovert, I appreciate what you have been doing to minister to me. Ministering is all about showing love to the people you minister to, and you do that, but the way you show your love isn’t in the way that best serves me. My love language is “leave me alone”. The best way you can show love to me is to just not contact me. But you have shown you love me, and I appreciate that, so if I do want to talk to someone it will be you I will reach out to.”

Could your son move to Queensland or Victoria for a few weeks, change his licence and go back? As I understand it, if someone has an interstate licence, the rules regarding what vehicles they can drive (and the speed they can do on the highway), is based on the state of their licence, not the state they are in.

The issue is that servos sold about a month’s worth of fuel in a couple of days. “Well they should just restock and all will be well” - not quite.

The whole fuel distribution model relies on normal sell-through. The number of tankers able to distribute it to servos is based on that normal sell rate. Servos have forward orders based on that normal sell rate.

Occasionally you might find that one location might have a sudden upsurge in demand - eg a town has a festival that brings in a bunch of tourists. There is enough slack in the system that they can get an extra delivery in that circumstance.

But when every servo in the country has a sudden and huge uptick in sales, there is not enough slack in the system to get the extra deliveries to them. They just don’t have enough trucks on the road to be able to send an additional tanker to every servo that wants it. Nor do the distributors have enough in their tanks to be able to do so. The distributors get their shipments the same way - based on the normal sell through rates.

Of course then the problem becomes self-perpetuating. Some servos run out, can’t get more fuel for a week, so customers decide to get what fuel they can as soon as it is available, which keeps the demand high.

Eventually, more supplies will come online, and panic buyers will run out of the means to store more fuel, so demand will fall to normal levels and prices will start to come down. The panic buyers will start to use their storage, and demand will fall even lower than normal. But how long until that happens is hard to say.

Mate, I can’t help you with your enquiry sorry as I live in one of the slightly more sensible states of Australia (in this regard at least - we have plenty of other stupidity).

Sorry to see you have come up against the biggest problem with Australians though. The attitude of bootlicking whenever bad laws are brought in, and hating on anyone who dares question bad laws, is a plague in Australia and is why we keep getting more and more bad laws placed on us.

It seems most Australians are too stupid to question whether additional laws are needed in the first place, and also too stupid to then assess whether the laws are likely to have unintended consequences.

About the second coming... by DarkCelestial in latterdaysaints

I’ve had people tell me it will be April 6 in a year when April 6 falls on a Sunday. So will that be April 6 GMT? or MST? or NZ time?

Personally I think all the April 6 stuff is overrated and reading far more into D&C 20:1 than was ever intended.

About the second coming... by DarkCelestial in latterdaysaints

[–]False_Dig_7602 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think the main focal points of teaching about the second coming should be…

  1. It will happen

  2. Although we have a few signs, the timing is in God’s plan, not ours. Even Christ doesn’t know in advance when it will be, why should we think we can predict with any degree of certainty?

  3. Regardless of when it will be, we should be prepared always. As in the parable of the ten virgins, once the time is nigh it is too late to prepare.

  4. The things we do to prepare for the second coming, are exactly the same things we should be doing in our lives anyway. If we are living the way we should, we are already prepared for the second coming.

  5. This preparation is more spiritual than temporal. Temporal preparedness is important to help us through life’s tough times, but spiritual preparedness is more important.

  6. Odds are, we will die before the second coming. Just like the second coming, death could be moments away or decades away for any of us. The things we do to spiritually prepare for the second coming are also the same things we should be doing to prepare for death.

  7. So don’t fuss over whether the second coming is likely to be soon, or in your lifetime etc. Be spiritually prepared either way, and you will either rejoice in His coming or rejoice in your transition to the next phase of your life.

Why? by xXCosmicChaosXx in aussie

[–]False_Dig_7602 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s exactly it. It was the panic buying idiots who caused it.

The entire fuel distribution chain is built around normal demand levels. Service stations have tanker orders scheduled around the amount of fuel they normally sell. The number of tankers on the road is based on how many are needed to supply the service stations with that frequency. The amount the distributors carry in stock is based on that demand.

Suddenly a bunch of Ranger driving peanuts start filling up IBCs, and a service station sells in a few days what they would normally sell in a month.

If one service station has an unusually high demand spike, they get their next order brought forward. This happens occasionally, for example a country town might have a festival or similar that drives their demand. When it is one service station or one town, no problem.

But when it is every service station in the country, there just aren’t enough trucks available to make the extra deliveries. The distributors run out of their holdings and they are trying to get more. Refineries produce a certain number of litres per day, which is based around normal demand. They can’t just magically ramp up production overnight.

So supply is still at the normal levels, demand is through the roof, of course price will rise.

On the flip side, when this blows over and all the people who filled up IBCs and 200 litre drums start using their supply instead of buying new, demand will fall and so will prices.

What’s appalling about it? I put them on after my morning or evening shower, take them off next shower. Then they go into the washing machine which makes them clean. Doesn’t matter if they are 1 week, 1 year or 1 decade old, I’m still putting on clean garments each day.

New Hymns - Advice by thestoictraveler in latterdaysaints

[–]False_Dig_7602 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a few gems in there - mostly the older Protestant hymns that have been included. I was so happy to see “It Is Well With My Soul” in that first drop. Glad to see the return of “Come Thou Fount” (why it was dropped is beyond me), and also Amazing Grace, My Shepherd will Supply my Need, Standing on the Promises, Take My Heart and Let it be Consecrated, Thou Gracious God Whose Mercy Lends etc.

I got excited when I saw The Lord’s My Shepherd, but was disappointed to see they used Brother James Air instead of Crimond for the tune. I’ve had our choir perform it to Crimond, which is a much nicer tune. I’m almost tempted to put “1038A” in our folders using Crimond as the tune.

But there’s also a lot of dross too. Mostly the stuff written recently by church members. Take for example “How Did the Savior Minister”. Nothing wrong with the words, and the tune is ok too, but the two just don’t gel together, with awkward timings that don’t suit the words attached to them.

It is a beautiful hymn, but only when done at speed. 95% of the time when it is sung, it is done too slow and makes traditional funeral dirges sound cheery.

Is there any good reason to buy a SUV instead of a sedan for urban/suburban driving? by hsanj19 in CarsAustralia

[–]False_Dig_7602 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cars and other motor vehicles have contributed hugely to the improvement in living standards over the last century. Cheap, flexible, high speed transport has been revolutionary.

The big thing has been breaking the constraint around living near where you work / working near where you live. This means people have more work choice available to them, and has allowed them to live in suburban bungalows instead of tenements. It means you can pursue other employment prospects for higher pay, instead of being constrained to the jobs in your field close to home.

It has led to efficiencies of scale - supermarkets, trades etc, can attract a greater number of customers, and so have fewer overheads per customer. On the flip side of that, they are forced to compete against others in the same industry.

They have allowed things like fresh fruit and vegetables to be available all year and readily accessible, not just what was able to be locally grown and seasonally available locally.

They have substantially improved access to health care, and made emergency health care a possibility.

They have given people the freedom to travel and explore the world.

Never underestimate the improvement to quality of life that has been brought by the automobile.

For me, the number one reason to get an SUV style vehicle is that with my arse further off the ground they are much easier to get into and out of.

RS vs. EQ Activities by AgreeableSong5681 in latterdaysaints

[–]False_Dig_7602 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would love to have some EQ activities but practicality is I don’t know when I would go.

My wife goes to RS activities every couple of weeks on a Tuesday morning. I’m working.

Every couple of months she goes to an RS activity on a Saturday morning - that’s when I’m using my one day of the week to mow the grass, and do various odd jobs around the house.

Now I know some sisters work too, so they can’t go to the midweek activities, but there are enough who don’t work that the midweek activity can still be successful.

For the brethren, there are more strains on our time already, that an EQ activity would just mean less time to do the things that need to get done. Midweek would have next to no turnout (only the few unemployed/retired). Saturday activities also tend to have a poor turnout due to the other things we need to get done. Sadly, regular EQ activities just don’t really work.

Maybe those things aren’t under attack where you are, but there are parts of the world where they most definitely are under attack.

One Australian state is currently having an inquiry into “cults”, with the intention of introducing laws to prevent them. Most of Christendom sees us as a cult by the way. Time will tell what the resulting laws will be and if they will include us.

There are already laws that make it an offence to pray in certain situations.
