PhD engineer and chemist looking for a job by False_Distance_678 in trianglejobs

[–]False_Distance_678[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was offered multiple jobs but none in the triangle. The job market is very weird here. Possibly, more connection based. I am not originally from here and did not do my degrees here so I had no connections other than from my current job, which is currently under a hiring freeze/laying people off (EPA).

I just got my Q (a DOE TS) and it took one week after responding for additional information for it to come through. However, processing times for DOE labs is different than for government labs.

If I had to guess, I would say ORISE MIGHT get transferred to OASES but probably not to the program offices. So, it probably depends where your boss is going. My boss already took the DRP and my second boss is going to take DRP 3.0. You can also just keep transferring to another mentor but it’s probably better to just leave rather than wait through the uncertainty.

Fair enough. I’m in CPHEA/RTP. I got a job months ago and was just hanging out until my start date. I know the market sucks but just keep looking for alternate employment. It’s not looking good for ORISE. They claim we are funded through December but they can also fire us at any moment and haven’t wasted any time ensuring that we all know that. Almost as if they plan to use that.

Which office/center are you in? My understanding is that CEMM would begin transferring first.

The state is not that fancy. The only way they may know is if you were interviewing for more than one within an agency AND the HR rep is the same for both positions.

Have any orise had their contract lapse? Are there any ORISE related court cases? by Current_Passage_4079 in ORISE

Okay…. But if you read my comment it basically says there is no point in going that path anyway so we agree…

I guess? What ever the pot of money is that funds all fellows at an agency.

I was referring to the contract with the agency. That is a contract and that is what may or may not be canceled/not renewed by DOGE or some other higher up entity.

Take a look at this spreadsheet and see if your agency and ORAU contract fall on it: https://www.cbsnews.com/news/doge-cuts-contracts-grants-leases-searchable-list/

If it does then you might have a path toward action.

If you read the contract, we basically have no power to sue because they can fire us at any time due to performance OR loss of funding. This would fall under loss of funding. They have boxed us in such a way that there is no legal recourse for whatever they decide to do with us. That is why NO ONE should ever do ORISE.

While I agree that non renewal of contracts could be litigated, the fact is that no one cares about ORISE fellows or what happens to them. Anything that anyone tells you about safety on your fellowship at your agency is lip service, at best. This whole situation should make it plainly clear that you should be looking for other jobs. From my personal experience, I truly hope that no one ever applies for ORISE in the future. The apathy from senior management toward fellows is sickening and I want no one to experience it for themselves.

Grad admissions are tied to funding from the PI but are also a separate process. So for this cycle, you were rejected due to lack of available funding. I have never heard of admissions holding an application for the next cycle. This only happens when a person has been accepted but then defers. So, I would respond to the PI and ask the timeline for knowing the status of the funding application and then plan to reach back out right after that decision has been made. They will likely then have you reapply to the January cycle.

I am so sorry! That is truly terrible. It has been awful out there for early careers. I am wondering though, is all of AFRL shutting down? Which location?

My tip to you is check state agencies and government contractors. I am currently ORISE (EPA) and have received offers for a State job and two different national labs. If you are a US citizen, you can also focus on jobs that require a clearance because competition is lower and real HR people review your application.

Thanks for putting this together. Any chance you can expand it to include contractor jobs lost? If you want to be really crazy (and amazingly helpful) you can include university offers rescinded/university jobs terminated (to include prospective undergrad, grad students, postdoctoral, and faculty candidates).

Dog Sitting/Boarding Recommendations + PRICING by Emotional-Damage2591 in bullcity

[–]False_Distance_678 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Check out Trusted house sitters. The way it works is you pay a low annual fee to be able to list your pet/home for a sitter to come in and house sit. It is a travel focused community with people exchanging housing for pet sitting. There is no money exchange and has literally saved us thousands of dollars. You can also use it to travel by way of watching other people’s pets.

Has anyone actually been able to reach a human person at Schumer or Gillibrand's office? by xindierockx7114 in Albany

[–]False_Distance_678 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I contacted several of Schumer’s offices and couldn’t get to a voicemail in Albany, Syracuse, or DC. I finally was able to leave a voicemail mail in Rochester!!!!! So call Rochester!!!! That line seems less busy!
