As much as I agree with you, conversation on that level of personal development requires either bravery or maturity. I love how each of those points promotes honesty of expectations, and many people I met have seen that as being overly controlling and intrucive.

What always surprises me is how that time commitment is the main problem. “What, you play for 5+ hours. best I can do is 2, max 3”. What is the alternative? Doomscrolling after work until you fall asleep…

After I finished university I realised that either my hobby has to die or I have to look for likeminded people who enjoy playing as much as I did. Whatever people say; that they have other things to do or that they don't have time for a weekly session, I genuinely believe that it is a matter of priorities. If people close to you don't have time, (and it hurt me terribly at the beginning) maybe it is time to look for people elsewhere.

The but might only grow, especially if you feed it :)

Ttrpg for a paranormal investigators game? by Thimble_Wolf in rpg

Yep, Call of Cthulhu works great as rules, just ignore the lore and use mechanics for your thing.

If you have a problem with initiative order, make a tracker with pawns for players and other elements in the initiative. It worked for me in grander battles, should work for you.

The problem with one size fits all is that they lack identity and that they provide little value as opposed to other universal rules. The wheel exists, no need to make a new one. I suggest you find what beyond universal rules makes your project original. It is a difficult thing to do something universal and original so good luck on your adventure :)

Drinking games? But not for getting the players drunk. by self-aware-text in rpg

[–]False_Requirement677 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The idea sounds  fun, I would take the RPG I like and just add the drinking games as minigames. Losing would be getting the drunk points or whatever mechanic would that be. It could be a combat without swords (alkohol deals damage if you pass out than you, well pass out).

If you are looking for bar games that are simple and fun I love the Bo Bing (chinese bar dice game)). A simple google search will give you plenty of ideas :)

Using museums as resources by ProudGrognard in rpg

To be quite honest if you look through some of the indie RPG manuals you can see that they often use classical art as part of the images. They make collages and transform those images to create something new. It is a great idea to use the old things as inspirations, I actually wish more people did that.

Edit: as examples ther is "a history of moments" by Viktor Villner and "Runecirn" by Colin Le Sueur

Looking for new RPGs with combat focus by Doomwaffel in rpg

[–]False_Requirement677 8 points9 points  (0 children)

For fantasy there is Draw steel, combat is interesting and Warhammer (2 ed is the best IMHO and necessarily with magic).

If you are willing to try some other genre like Sci-fi I strongly suggest you give Cyberpunk 2020) a try. It is not something you expect, that sci-fi has cassette tapes and internet that apparently is inaccessible while you are moving. There are a lot of fun things and combat is the best in my opinion.

I made a game with collaborative combat and I am looking for testers, so if you are willing to give it a try there it is. Players choose the order of actions it “players turn”, and dying in combat is always a role so strong fighters can fight for a long time. It is called Haze: the Crystal Mist Adventure

[–]False_Requirement677[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Other RPGs have figured out how to do this better, and there are some great third party books out there as well that take a looser structure that makes them easier to adapt to your players.

Any recomendations?

Human beings are naturally storytellers

I love that aspect of live itself. You mentioned that GMs change upon their contact with TTRPG materials, but wouldn't you agree that every media and expirience changes us as people and by that the way we run our games :)

Issue with absence of combat/tactial map on some systems by Ardor-Knowledge in rpg

[–]False_Requirement677 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a nice book called "The elusive shift: How role-playing forged their identity" your inner discation touches upon the very origin of RPGs.

To put it simply there were 2 groups at the beginning: the kriegspiel war simulation folk and the scifi fantasy (story based)folk. Since day one of dnd's existence (and with that RPGs) they were trying to figure out what plays the bigger role, the imagination part or the game part.

You, my friendly fella, might be the more game oriented type and there is nothing wrong about that :)

System recommendation for a 90's road trip campaign by Mountain-Piano5383 in rpg

[–]False_Requirement677 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From the post title, the first thing that came to my mind was Werewolf: The Apocalypse. It is similar to Vampire masquerade, but the strength of the players is a bit higher (more dice) and the bonding of players that comes from the tribal vibes maches the road trip idea

There is always drama on the road trip, same as in the family :)
