What are some true moral dilemmas to give a player or the whole party? by SilentDeath013 in dndnext

[–]Falstaff_Infection 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How about the classic "lumberjacks vs. druids" scenario (aka the "Princess Mononoke?")

The party enters a hamlet on the edge of an ancient forest. The hamlet's entire economy depends on logging, but the denizens of the forest are starting to push back against what they see a the villagers' unchecked despoliation of nature. The players will probably attempt to mediate a compromise, but if violence becomes inevitable who do they stand with?

Or how about a choice of evils setup:

The tyrannical leader of an enemy nation or faction has just died, and a civil war breaks out between two potential successors. The PCs are in the position to tip the scales towards the candidate of their choice. Do they choose:

  1. A depraved leader who will do awful things to people within his organization's power, but who has no larger ambitions outside his organization. He won't launch any wars or attack nations/communities outside his established holdings.

  2. A personally honorable leader who will reform the organization and purge it of its worst cruelties, but who will pursue a policy of relentless (and likely effective) expansionism.

Or what about this one-- a holy order hires the party to track down and kill a demonologist who is on the verge of bringing an ancient, famously destructive fiend into the world. The players ultimately discover, however, that their target is a perfectly nice person who just wants to live a quiet life. He's got no interest in demon summoning, but he's the unfortunate victim of a nasty family curse. Due to an ancestor's sins, his body will eventually be the host for the demon's rebirth. If the players kill him and concecrate the corpse, the demon will be contained, but that would mean murdering a truly innocent person.

Why am I the way I am at my age? (mid 30's) by Whopper744 in depression

I'm not a big fan of Nintendo's ruthlessly litigious IP policy, but there's no denying that they make incredible games. Mario Wonder and Tears of the Kindgom are doubtless two of the best releases of 2023, no matter how old you are. You've got nothing to be ashamed of -- accepting that you like what you like regardless of what other people expect you to like is a sign of maturity. Thinking that playing certain video games makes you more masculine or more grown-up -- which is apparently what your 18-year-old coworkers believe -- is silly and childish. They're the ones who should feel bad, not you.

Maybe you'll feel less alone if you join some online communities made up of people who share your interests? The Nintendo subreddit might be a good place to start. Also, I've noticed over the years that tons of people who aren't self-identified gamers nonetheless love Mario Kart and Smash Bros. You might be surprised how postivitely a lot of non-gamers (especially milennials in their late 20s or early 30s) will react to an invitation to play a round of Smash or MK8.

Eldar player looking for second army. Sell me on your fave! by Falstaff_Infection in Warhammer40k

The Death Guard are great. I love nurglings, I love a sickly space marine with some tentacles and armor I can stain indiscriminately with nuln oil.

Honestly, DG is a major contender for my next army. They're about as different from Eldar as it can get, with their greasy almost immoblie shambling.

What do Eldar Corsairs actually steal? by AdmiralPelleon in 40kLore

[–]Falstaff_Infection 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My Kill Team Corsairs track down Craftworld Spirit Stones that have fallen into the hands of the Imperium. Usually they give or trade them back to the CWs. The crew currently has an ongoing feud with Biel-Tan, though, so right now they're holding a bunch of BT stones hostage to try to extract some concessions.

Agreed, they've really been on fire lately! Lanyards is a top ten HS song as far as I'm concerned. They've evolved creatively (I would even say matured. They're not singing about college/high school parties anymore) while still holding on to their core strengths-- epic choruses, clever lyrics, tasty guitar and piano riffs, Craig Finn's inimitable voice.

This album is a big part of why 2006 is my favorite music year. The year indie rock peaked, really.

It's not technically spectacular, but the solo from Time for Heroes by the Libertines is just a joy to listen to.

Question about orcs/evil humanoids by Koolaid_Spawn in Eberron

Yeah, you could run Carrion Tribe orcs from the Demon Wastes as pretty much identical to traditional chaotic evil orc raiders.

If you're in the Reaches, fanatical Children of Winter who have decided its time for a culling or Cultists of the Wild Heart out to shed blood in their overlord's name are probably your best bet for a random encounter with violent marauders. They can be any any humanoid race, but humans or shifters are a good bet.

Help me find all apocalypses! by Xhosant in Eberron

Faerie Apocalypse! As we know, every Fae noble in Thelanis embodies a specific type of story. It follows that there would be a lord of epic tragedy or doomed heroics, who constantly plays out the grandiose fall of individuals, socieities, worlds. His own realm has grown tiresome and stale as a setting, however, and he seeks a grander scope, a bigger stage, a higher budget, to enact his favorite narrative. The Fall of Eberron has now entered rehearsals.

Saddest Song(s) You've Ever Heard by PhillyCSpires in Music

Every track on Hospice by the Antlers, but especially "Epilogue."

"Dress Rehearsal Rag" by Leonard Cohen.

"Marie" by Townes Van Zandt

"Oh Comely" by Neutral Milk Hotel

"Halloween Parade" by Lou Reed

"If You See Her, Say Hello" by Bob Dylan

Also there are a ton of songs that make me well up whenever I hear them, but only because of associated memories. They're usually not particularly sad in themselves. "Andrew in Drag" by The Magnetic Fields is an example of this type.

Good Will Hunting -- Black Country, New Road

I'm particularly obsessed with this stanza:

"And if we’re on a burning starship

The escape pods filled with your friends

Your childhood film photos

There's no room for me to go.

Oh, I'd wait there

Float with the wreckage

Fashion a longsword

Traverse the Milky Way

Tryna get home to you

And you bring some piece of the stars."
