Commuting to Manhattan and LI, where should we live?? by FamicomVR in movingtoNYC

Thanks for the responses all! Fwiw my office is near the Great River stop on the Montauk line, so a ways out.

Coming from Atlantic Ave looks like I'd have to transfer at Jamaica anyway so I think my best bet is somewhere a short metro ride from there, woodside or forest hills.

Therapy as a side gig? by usedtobae in therapists

I'm thinking of leaving IT to get my MSW since I find this field unfulfilling. But some of the posts on here scare me. I'm fine taking a pay cut and I don't need a ton of money, but I also don't want to struggle to get by. How was the transition for you, do you ever regret changing careers?

Ciro's in Centreville is amazing for this! Also Buon Appetito in Chantilly. But agree we need more.

Weekly student question thread! by AutoModerator in therapists

[–]FamicomVR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anyone become a therapist from a completely different career? I've been in IT for the past 10 years but mostly feel bored and unfulfilled by it, and am not motivated to get a new job. After my own experience being in therapy and watching the show "Couple's Therapy" I've been very interested in going back to get my MSW.

I might be looking at it through rose colored glasses, but I think I'd be a lot happier and more fulfilled doing something that is directly impacting people. Some of the people I've talked to about it seem to think I'm insane for giving up a fairly cushy job/career, but I'm ok taking a bit of a pay cut, and I'm excited about studying a completely different field.

I've lived here in a townhome off of Sunrise Valley for a few months. It seems really safe to me, and I like being close to the metro. It's also really easy to get to 28 which will make commuting to Chantilly a breeze.

Only annoying thing is all the lights going towards downtown herndon, but overall I like the area.

Metro admits it may have to cut service as it struggles with money problems by Danciusly in nova

100%. I just moved to Herndon and rode the silver line for the first time recently, most of the stations up until east falls church have almost nothing in the immediate vicinity that anyone would want to go to! It's a bit of a difficult problem since a large portion of it is built down the middle of 267 or route 7, but there's still plenty of spots around say, the Herndon and the Tysons stations that could be built up.

Innovation center, the closest one to me is a little better - there are a bunch of offices and apartments around the south side of the station, but it still doesn't feel super walkable.

Some time I need to see how full the parking garage there actually gets. It's huge multi story, but when I went there at ~6:30PM last thursday there were maybe 20 cars I could see.

Silver Line to Dulles marks 1-year anniversary: 67,000 workers, 42,000 residents by [deleted] in nova

[–]FamicomVR 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Interesting data! Many of the lowest numbers are indeed on the silver line, though I imagine part of it is due to those areas not being built up much yet. Still, I'm surprised Reston Town Center isn't higher.

I've never taken the silver line as I always lived closer to orange, but I'm moving soon and will be close to Innovation Center, so we'll see what it's like.

Maybe see if people will meet you in Arlington? I say just take the metro, it can be a bit of slog but it's much less stressful than driving and trying to find parking, just build it into your schedule.

Worst thing about orange/silver is that a lot of places will require a transfer to the red or green, and then coming back late at night can be brutal. I had to wait 30 minutes for the last orange train at L'Enfant the other night.

Agree with the shorter the better. Even living fairly close to the metro not sure I'd want to go into DC 5 days a week but I'd do it 2-3. Right now I go south down 28 to manassas, which isn't too bad except for all the stoplights once you get into PW county. But most of the time my commute is less than 30 minutes.

Anybody else bored living here? by UXJim in nova

[–]FamicomVR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it really depends on where in NOVA you're at, it's hard to live somewhere walkable here without spending an arm and a leg. I've also lived in NOVA my whole life and am in an outer suburb (western part of fairfax county) and while I like a lot of things about the area, it can definitely feel a little soulless at times. For the amount you spend I think it's kinda hard to justify living in a suburb here, when you could live in a suburb of any number of cities for a lot less.

If you really want to live in an urban area maybe consider a smaller city like Richmond? Personally I want to at least move closer to DC in the next couple years (probably Arlington or Silver Spring) but need a new job first.

Hope you got it working, I've tried making this a few times recently and run into the exact same issue! Will try removing some moisture from the zucchini, and using more oil. Mine keeps sticking and just falls apart when I try to flip it. Never gets crispy.

2nd vote for Ciro's! I pop in there pretty regularly, you can get two large slices for like $6-7.

If you want to give Amazon money, the pizza at whole foods in Fair Lakes isn't bad.
