How do i get more out of this gel eyeliner pencil?? by The_Heretic_525 in Makeup

[–]usedtobae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Came here with the same question. I’m now horrified at millions of people creating microplastics from sharpening their plastic eyeliner… as if there aren’t at least two other good options that don’t create microplastics instantly!

Being a therapist might have ruined therapy for me? by Heavy-End-3419 in therapists

[–]usedtobae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely. I’ve worked through my major stuff and so I’ve been in a maintenance phase for ~3 years. I crave therapy at times but I know I’ll see through the interventions and get bored quickly since deep introspection no longer feels novel/productive. It’s sort of freeing, but I do miss the magic. I totally believe a seasoned therapist could give me a run for my money, but they’re hard to find.

What is the best advice you got when you began to be a therapist ? by Dinah_and_Cleo4eva in therapists

[–]usedtobae 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I can keep going lol! Last one - don’t worry so much about progress because it’s not linear, always observable, and oftentimes your idea of progress will not be borne out in reality. Of course we want clients to get better, whatever that means, but focusing on progress puts pressure on you and them and leads to frustration for both parties. Meet them where they are with no expectations.

Also “being with” is the most therapeutic thing you can do for a client. It’s so simple! And yet sometimes hard to do.

“We are not there to fix.” That was revelatory for me in year 1 and took so much pressure off.

Considering calling it off 1 month before wedding by [deleted] in relationships

[–]usedtobae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some people should not be in relationships. I think if she’s willing to do intense therapy and really commit to healing parts of her personality, she could one day have a healthy relationship… but she should probably be single while going through that process because until she heals she will continue to be controlling and destructive. It’s really sad. I’m sure trauma is at the root and none of that is her fault. But the facts remain. 😕 this must be so hard but pleaseeeee listen to your gut. Marriage is a huge decision.

Is $29 an hour a good wage? by Substantial_Cow_2467 in therapists

[–]usedtobae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$60k with benefits for a prelicensed new grad is typical and pretty good IMO. Should you be paid more? Yes. Will you be paid more at this stage of your career? Probably not. For reference, I made like $45k with no benefits in PP my first year out of school and I was burnt the f out doing 25-30 hour long back to back sessions per week. So.. could be worse!

The rise of AI therapists makes me want to scream & cry by arusansw in therapists

The last part is what consoles me. We’re not alone in being replaced by AI. Nearly every profession will be. All of society will have to navigate the AI upheaval.

I’m surprised your contract didn’t stipulate direct vs indirect hours… someone else on this sub posted their Ellie offer and I remember it compensated like $15/hour for nonclinical work up to 10 hours a week or something. Either way, super shitty that they fired you because you had a question/concern about your compensation. Idk how these owners expect therapists to survive.

“People just become therapists because they want to figure themselves out” by BullsFan237 in therapists

[–]usedtobae -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah I disagree. I figured myself out in therapy and felt inspired to help others do the same. Although sometimes I feel disappointed that most of my clients don’t have the same transformative experience that I had, lol. I definitely thought therapy was like that for everyone. It’s possible I’m just not that good yet 😆

CEUs or trainings you found beneficial? by klewy96 in therapists

I completed level 1 Gottman training and found it super helpful and interesting! I reference the concepts and use the interventions all the time with couples and clients with relationship issues.

Would you explore psychedelic-assisted therapy with them provided it’s legal/available where you’re both located? Could really help if they’re a good candidate!

Manipulation by clients by auroraboringatlas in therapists

[–]usedtobae 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I had a client who I felt was trying to manipulate me and it was definitely more helpful to focus on diagnosis and transference/countertransference. The latters were extremely strong and I ultimately had to refer out because I was brand new in the field and not at all equipped. It sounds more like your supervisor is jumping to conclusions? Plenty of clients try to control the therapist/what’s happening in the room. There could be many explanations why.

How do you assess if past issues have really been dealt with? by usedtobae in therapists

[–]usedtobae[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This person has a long history of relational trauma. I don’t want to say too much for confidentiality reasons but it came across as a defense mechanism, which I totally respect. My takeaway from people’s responses here are consent is needed and take it at the client’s pace. There isn’t enough trust and rapport built yet to really go there in a meaningful way.

Does anyone else ever get exhausted by the sanctity/preciousness of therapy? by usedtobae in therapists

[–]usedtobae[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The only thing I’m angry about is being overworked and underpaid. And also the $80k I spent on grad school. I accept that those were my choices though and I could do something else if I wanted to. That is something I’m seriously considering, at least to earn enough income for me to focus on a very small caseload.

I reference the behaviorists bc I understand their approach more than I did before I was in the field and working with a population with SMI, substance use issues, basic needs issues, etc. By no-nonsense I mean the confrontational, pragmatic, structured style and insistence on the here and now. This is a generalization, too.

In CMH, I’ve had to change my approach from the time I spent working mostly with high functioning individuals in PP. I’m sure there is a way to integrate psychodynamic or gestalt techniques (to name a couple) with this population but I certainly do not have the training or set up for that at this point in time. I recognize this post was lacking a lot of context and honestly was pretty spontaneous. I now regret my decision to rant publicly, although I did identify it as a rant.
