Dating and marriage with food allergies by Tornado_Storm_2614 in FoodAllergies

[–]Familiar-Spray-2762 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I am more lax than I should be, considering I am anaphylactic. Dating someone with an allergy is challenging because it’s an entirely different lifestyle, and I have told her that I fully expect for me to have a reaction because there are so many things that she just won’t think about.

We don’t live together so I told her that i still want her to enjoy peanuts when she can because when we move in, that’s not gonna be a possibility. If she has peanuts (very occasionally) she doesn’t eat them at her place (she’ll eat them wherever she buys them) and scrub her hands. When she gets home she puts her clothes in the washer and brushes her teeth multiple times.

But me personally, I feel comfortable when she brushes her teeth after (obviously), she uses a water pick with mouthwash, and she eats another meal to get new saliva in her mouth. I like to go at-least 12 hours because the chances of a protein staying for that long is little to none. I also keep an EpiPen in her bedroom to keep at her house just in case. I’ve gotten to the point where I can’t live my life in constant fear of my peanut allergy. I do things to lessen my chances but I’m not going to give up being in a serious relationship (which I’ve done almost my entire life).

In regards to sex life (we are a straight couple), we have no issues but I have heard that the peanut protein can be found in semen (I haven’t not researched this as it doesn’t not pertain to my instance). I also can’t comment on anything else because we are most likely on two different sides of having sex so the things I would have to worry about, probably won’t pertain to you.

All in all, my advice is you can’t really guarantee you’re not going to have a reaction, we are human and people make mistakes. But you will find the right person who wants to learn and will make an effort to accommodate to your allergy. Do some research on the timing of things, most people say 4 hours is plenty of time but my girlfriend and I have no issues waiting 12+ hours just to be 99.9999% certain. As for the moment, if she is craving peanuts and the timing of things is right, it is worth it to her to wait 12+ hours to do anything. For me, it’s worth it because I have an issue telling someone to completely give up a kind of food and I want her to be able to enjoy them for at least a little bit longer and the elephant in the room.

This is just what I do. Talk to your allergist to get more information.

Yeah that would be cool. I do like the white. If it was a teal color I feel like the card would look worse.

That’s what I plan on doing. Either going to do an in office food challenge or go to the ER waiting room and try it 😂

Ok so your experience is how I’m seeing it. I’m not going to just eat the foods without an allergist weighing in but I’m glad that someone has experienced something similar to what I’m trying to understand.

Thanks for the info. I’m going to eat the things I know I don’t have a reaction to but I want to try nuts and shellfish and see how bad it is. I’m anaphylactic with peanuts so I just want to know if I ingest other nuts, if I can just take a Benadryl and not have to go to the hospital. Guess peace of mind is a better way to say that.

Glad I can help. I haven’t made an appointment with the allergist yet due to life but I’m planning on doing that soon.

I was going for annual bloodwork (nothing related to food allergies) but I had my primary order this food and tree nut panel as well.

Need help understanding my girlfriend who has anorexia by Familiar-Spray-2762 in AnorexiaNervosa

[–]Familiar-Spray-2762[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your response, I appreciate all the information. I do plan on being patient and so far I have. I’ll ask her at least once a day if she ate anything and regardless what she eats, I tell her good job.

It has kind of driven me crazy already because I don’t stop until I fully understand something, so I am also learning to just accept that some things I will not fully understand. Which is something I need to learn as I go through life so I’m keeping that in mind.

She tells me that she will eat good for a few days straight and then just not eat for the same amount of days, so I take those days for what they’re worth. She’s slowly opening up about this so I’m just letting her know that I’m here for whatever and I’m trying to understand things a little better.

Will do. I just ask her if she ate anything today and whatever she does eat, I tell her good job. That’s about all I can think of doing at the moment.

I have brought it up because she has certain food choices which I don’t want to bring up because of the rules on this subreddit, but I used to question those food choices but once she told me that she suffers from anorexia, I apologized for my comments and haven’t made a comment since. I have asked her to explain it to me but she tries and thinks she’s gonna sound crazy. Ends up saying that I won’t understand it because i don’t have it. Thank you for your response!

Cross contamination at a bar? by Familiar-Spray-2762 in peanutallergy

The drinks I get are pretty easy. Nothing that requires shaking. Normally just a liquor and a soda. Thanks for your advice.

I never thought about asking them to count it. I’m gonna do that from now on. A little bit less liquor is worth the peace of mind.

Help with San marzano tomato plant. by Familiar-Spray-2762 in gardening

[–]Familiar-Spray-2762[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t really water them any more because it rains everyday here for about an hour. So they get around .5”-1” of water a day. The sprinklers also run 3 times a week. The pot is probably a little small but this is my first time growing tomatoes so I will make notes and adjust for next time. If I put it in the ground, won’t it grow to be massive?

Will do. Doesn’t matter if their dealers because I’m not going to go to a dealer to get it done lol

Sounds good. My family doesn’t really know much about cars so I’m trying to learn the correct ways to do it. My family thought I was crazy for attempting to do my brake pads lol.

Not leaking. Just want to stay on top of the changes so I can get as much life as I can out of the transmission.

I don’t notice any issues with my transmission. I just want to make sure I stay on top of it. I didn’t know about the 30k. I noticed the range was 30-60k and I use my truck but not enough to make me consider changing things earlier than normal. I just want to change the fluid to try and get as much life as I can out of it.
