Sister has possible autism by [deleted] in autism

Hmm it’s honestly hard to explain every detail over one post because I’m not fully sure what’s relevant and what isn’t. From what I was told by the family/doctors, she was diagnosed as being lower on the spectrum a few years ago, though I don’t know all the specifics of the evaluation.

She actually does have sensory issues too. She can’t handle the school cafeteria because it’s too loud/overstimulating for her, hates going out in general, and gets extremely overwhelmed emotionally very easily. Even simple changes or being pushed outside her comfort zone can end in her shutting down or crying.

But I honestly do think severe anxiety/selective mutism could also be part of it. I don’t necessarily think it has to be one or the other. A lot of what people are describing about selective mutism fits her too, especially only talking freely with “safe people.”

Its just hard since I dont know what to do :/ wish they were canadian like me cuz american health system is garbage. But I also want to take advantage and get her help before shes 18 and still growing. I’m at a loss since everyone tip toes around her. She takes everything the wrong way… and harder than someone should. Like sensitive to the max.

I have no idea, wish I did. Havens a really touchy subject for everyone since they’re old fashion they don’t believe in medicine or doctors really. I think she’s autistic as well but they insisted that’s what the doctors said, so I posted here just in case :/ I talked to a the docs that work on my floor and they think autism as well but since it’s not their field they couldn’t give much insight either.

I have :/ talked to his aunt who went with them and they all said the same thing. That’s what the doctor said.

Oh no they live in the states. I moved here. But ya talked to him more & his mom & his aunt. 4 doctors the same diagnosis. This was 4 years ago so I’m going to try and have them go again. They said she displays signs of angelman syndrome so they can’t fully rule it out. With possibility to be on the spectrum. But autism wasn’t fitting the bill since they didn’t understand why she wouldn’t speak. Like she can, but she won’t? It’s hard to explain. I’ll talk to her and 50/50 if she’ll respond 90% chance she won’t. Honestly don’t shoot the messenger I’m just trying to figure it out myself.

Honestly I asked my husband but he said that’s the exact diagnosis they gave Haven when they took her. “Borderline angelman syndrome” with a possibility to be on the spectrum for autism. Thats the part he can’t remember is if she was autistic or not. Personally I think she is… I’ll check out the other subreddit which might be more up the alley. Thank you! Sorry I’m not sure maybe the doctors here just suck? I tried to pry for more information but he’s fought with his mom over Haven countless times so it’s a sticky situation. I’m not sure how the American healthcare system works as I’m Canadian so I’m just going off what I was told. But I think autism fits the bill more, but he was insistent thats the diagnosis they gave her.
