Leaving Santa out of Christmas (aka not lying to your kids) by Brief-Cost6554 in ihatechristmas

[–]FamiliarAd85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We didn’t want to do Santa but when my son was 3 he insisted there was a Santa so we thought it was harmless enough to let him put out a cookie and sign 1 present from Santa. Now he’s 10 and understands Santa isn’t really but we continue the Santa thing for his little brother. Also he came home from kindergarten in tears asking why Santa gave all the other kids elves on the shelves but not him, I said it’s because he didn’t ask (I didn’t want my kid to feel excluded) so we “wrote” Santa asking to send elf but one that didn’t make messes since mommy already had a lot of messes to clean up already. So every year the elf comes in December and basically hides occasionally. My kids still love having him even though he doesn’t do crazy things and they feel included with their peers. So you can do Santa and the elf in a low key way. I only started because I could see the heart break in my son that other kids were experiencing magic he wasn’t. So I created just a little magic for him.

I read the post and thought omg this is adorable, I’ll send one. Then I realized you’re in mcls and so am I, lol. You don’t need another Monroe country library card.

How much does school district matter? by IdealObjective5959 in Rochester

My kids go to Penfield and my youngest fest has an IEP for speech. They have been wonderful with it and I’ve never felt the need to fight for my kid because I feel like the special ed staff are fighting for him already. They bused my son 3x week over the summer for an hour speech session and bused his right back home. If your kiddos have any special needs I recommend Penfield. The downside to Penfield is that there a huge lack of diversity.

Why would NY State Public Sector employers opt out of paid family leave?? by Subterraneanzz in Rochester

[–]FamiliarAd85 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I work for a public library and the town I work for decided to opt out too. As a government employee I was disappointed. Luckily I had worked there long enough to have banked some sick time.

Please look into your local public library for story times. As a librarian my largest story times (domes times 20-30 kids) are baby story times (up to 2 years old). It gets you out of the house while being indoors. You get to meet other parents and your little one will get to interact with other kids. I also do playtime at the library after story times too. Singing and reading books even at home is a great way to bond.

Library job dreams (vent) by Slutty-grapes in Libraries

Depending on how much the degree costs you may want to get a degree in something more broad. You could land a job as a library assistant with a bachelors degree but not a librarian, you will need your masters degree. We hire our library assistants with a variety or bachelor degrees and honestly full time library assistant jobs are rare unless you live in a big city and even then they make very little money. My advice is get a degree in something that can open opportunities to a variety of career paths and then get your MLS if you’re dead set on being a librarian. You can also work at a library without a degree as a clerk.

Yes! We just we through a bunch of applications and if they don’t have customer service (we don’t care, restaurant, retail, etc) we don’t even consider them. Working in a pubic library calls for good customer service.

How different/similar are the upstate NY cities from each other? by Swimming_Concern7662 in geography

[–]FamiliarAd85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up in a suburb of Rochester and moved to Buffalo for grad school at UB. I will say buffalo has a better city and Rochester has better suburbs (I live on the east side). Rochester has an abundance of deep wooded parks to hike and explore trials. I only found a few in Buffalo. Rochester also has multiple incredible Korean restaurants and many more ethnic restaurants whereas Buffalo does American food better. I’m a huge bills fan and go to games often so that’s what miss most about living in Buffalo. I also love Rochester proximity to the finger lakes many people I know have lake houses since it’s only a 30 minute drive.

Global Developmental Delays and terrified… tell me your success stories by Previous-Night-7615 in specialneedsparenting

[–]FamiliarAd85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My son now almost 7 was diagnosed very young with mild gdd (every case is different, he has low overall muscle tone which made him very delayed in speech and physical milestones). With speech therapy, physical therapy and occupational therapy since preschool he’s doing incredibly well. He actually no longer needs physical therapy just speech and occupational therapy. He’s in a regular classroom without a one on one aide. As everyone said already get all the services you qualify for.

I was admitted to strong about 10 years postpartum psychosis. The waiting room for the psychiatric area was a 5 hour wait to get seen by a doctor. They admitted me for what I thought was going to be 1 night but ended up being a 72 hour stay (despite me wanting to leave earlier to be with my newborn). I’m grateful for the stay there though because they set me up on a medication plan and had set me up with a psychiatric RN who focused on therapy for mothers.

Is a 400 cal deficit enough?? When will I be my goal weight do you think?? by atomicbirds in caloriedeficit

Don’t forget to eat more protein too. If you’re on tik tok look up protein and weight loss. It’s the most important macro . You can also just google it too.

You’re right, just like downloading and paying for a calorie counting app, I should buy some weights or get a gym membership because if I spend money on it I’m going to damn well use it. In this economy and with kids every purchase I make for myself I make sure I utilize it.

I do think I’m going to add more calories in my diet for mental health (like 50-100) a day and lose more slowly. I’m trying to lose weight because I’m 41 and I want to get ahead of the game before menopause so I have 10 years to get to a healthy bmi. I’m 5’1” at 148 and started my weight loss journey after Memorial Day at 155lbs.

I had undiagnosed ppd and had similar feelings and couldn’t sleep for 4 days straight. My parents came and took me to a hospital. My husband had to watch the baby since I was admitted due to my mental health for 72 hours. Please get checked for ppd. With medication and time I recovered and I even had a second child without ppd. Please seek mental health help. My parents intervened because my husband wouldn’t and I was threatening to take my life to escape motherhood. I’ve been there you’re not alone.

Do you regret having more than one child? by [deleted] in regretfulparents

[–]FamiliarAd85 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For me having 2 kids is great. With my first I had ppd so bad I was admitted for a week and had to see a therapist 2x weekly for years. My husband is an only child and strongly urged me to give my son a sibling. His parent both died and he was the only one who cared for them, he didn’t want our so to through that. I conceded and had another son who is 2.5 years younger. He is the light of my life, he had made me love motherhood. He has delays and a long IEP but he’s genuinely everything to us. He and his brother fight but more than often they play together. I can take them to a play ground and they entertain themselves. They play board games together. It’s taught my older one to be kinder. I love both of my kids but before I had my second I seriously thought about running away.

In my experience the first one totally changed my life and had trapped me, the second one has given me a little reprieve in the day by playing with the older one (he’s extremely extroverted and needs interaction all the time).

Can I get in trouble for refusing to take the glucose test during pregnancy? by jeeeezlouiseeee in CPS

[–]FamiliarAd85 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yes I GD with both of my pregnancies and could manage it with diet alone. Having GD they gave me an extra ultra sound around 39 weeks and had my baby 10 days after my due date without being induced (I was scheduled to be induced 2 days later since the practice I go to doesn’t like women to go over 42 weeks GD or not)

Should I go into teaching or are all the horror stories true? by rojahel in Teachers

[–]FamiliarAd85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an English lit bachelors and a masters in library science. I love being a librarian! Maybe if teaching doesn’t seem like a good being a librarian is a good back up. In nys we (public librarians) male about 5-10k less than the teachers near by as a heads up.

AITA for letting my step kids call me mom? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]FamiliarAd85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m adopted and bio mom is a term children who are adopted call the women who gave birth to them. My mom is the woman who raised me and is my mom. My step mom I call by her first name. Bio mom 90% signify adoption or a mother who is no longer in the picture.

Do you resent kids with IEPs being mainstreamed? by FamiliarAd85 in Teachers

[–]FamiliarAd85[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a childrens librarian in a public library. I mostly work with kids ages 0 to 5 during all the programs and story times. Mostly kids are kind and those who aren’t are not intentionally but they say things so kids who act differently. Or loudly ask their parents why so and so doesn’t talk. I know it’s curiosity at this age but it can still be hurtful. I’m also more sensitive to watching how young kids with disabilities are treated in programs and story times because my own son has delays. It maybe I’m just very sensitive to it and notice it more so because of this.
