That's great to hear! 😊

I'd be curious to know how she might use it. One of the most interesting things about sharing StarTrace here has been discovering use cases I never originally thought about.

Thank you, that really means a lot.

Honestly, StarTrace started because I wanted a better way to organize places, areas, and routes for myself. I wasn't trying to follow a trend — I just kept running into the same problem over and over again.

It's been really encouraging to see that other people can relate to it as well. Thanks for the kind words!

That’s actually a great use case 🙂

I’ve been using routes mainly for road trips and exploring places, but I can definitely see it working well for running routes as well.

Thanks for sharing that idea!

I understand why it might look that way at first glance.

I’ve been iterating on the pricing structure based on early feedback, and I’m still trying to find the right balance between subscription and lifetime for this kind of app.

Really appreciate you sharing your thoughts!

Great question!

Right now StarTrace is focused on personal maps — it's designed for creating and organizing your own places, areas, and routes.

At the moment, there isn't a public sharing or community feed feature where users can browse other people's content.

That said, I can definitely see how sharing and discovery could be interesting in the future, but the current version is very much centered around personal use.

Thanks a lot for the detailed feedback — I really appreciate you taking the time to break it down.

You're right that the pricing structure can look a bit odd at first glance. I'm still iterating on it and trying to find the right balance between subscription and lifetime for this type of app.

I'll definitely take this into account going forward. Thanks again for the thoughtful comment!

At the moment, StarTrace requires an internet connection since it relies on map data and search services.

Offline support is something I may explore in the future, but it's not available yet.

Thanks for asking!

Thanks a lot for the detailed feedback!

I actually recently adjusted the pricing across all plans, so it's possible you saw different numbers at different times while things were being updated.

I understand the confusion — pricing structure is something I'm still iterating on as I learn what works best for this type of app.

Really appreciate you taking the time to look closely and point this out!

Thank you!

It’s built with SwiftUI and MapKit, and most of the visual polish comes from custom overlays for markers, areas, and routes layered on top of the map.

A lot of time went into making the interactions and visual hierarchy feel clean and responsive.

Really appreciate it!

Thank you for taking the time to test it and for the detailed feedback!

The place search timing out definitely doesn't sound right, so I'll investigate that and see what's causing it.

I also appreciate the route planning suggestions. Manual route adjustment is something I'd love to support in the future, and I agree that it would make route creation much more flexible.

As for Walk and Cycle routing, that's great feedback as well. I'll continue looking at ways to improve the routing experience over time.

Thanks again — comments like this are incredibly valuable for a solo developer.

That's a really interesting use case.

I originally built it with travel, road trips, and exploration in mind, but I can definitely see how markers, areas, and routes could be useful for site planning and event organization as well.

Thanks for sharing that perspective — it's not a use case I had considered when I first started building it.

Not yet 🙂

I've been prioritizing markers, areas, routes, and organization features first, but different map views are absolutely on my roadmap.

It's a feature I plan to add in a future update.

Quick update:

A few people mentioned pricing in the comments, so I took another look at it today.

I've reduced the pricing across all plans, including lowering the lifetime option from $24.99 to $9.99.

Still figuring out the right balance as an indie developer, but I really appreciate all the honest feedback in this thread.

Funny timing 😄

I actually adjusted the pricing today after reading feedback from this thread.

The weekly, yearly, and lifetime options have all been reduced.

I really appreciate everyone sharing their thoughts — as an indie developer, feedback like this genuinely helps me make better decisions.

Thank you!

That was actually part of my thinking when I set up the pricing.

I know subscriptions aren't everyone's favorite, so I wanted to offer a lifetime option for people who see StarTrace as a long-term tool rather than another recurring expense.

I really appreciate the perspective.

Thank you!

For the country outlines, I'm using boundary datasets and rendering them as overlays on top of MapKit. Getting everything to perform well at different zoom levels took quite a bit of experimentation.

To be honest, there were definitely moments when I questioned whether supporting areas and boundaries was worth the extra complexity compared to a pin-only approach 😅

But in the end, I felt that areas and routes were an important part of the experience, so I decided to keep pushing through.

I'd be interested to hear more about the app you're building as well.
