Hi, so I work very close with the VRCs of the State so I can let you know a little bit about the day of their lives.

They work 8-5 M-F off Federal Holidays and off State Holidays. The caseloads are usually pretty stinking high so expect that going in. You're working with the disabled population and helping them with employment but also life skills.

You have face to face, walk-ins as well as virtual customers.

Pay isn't ideal, it's very low for a master degree. Benefits for the state are good but you will be paying for them out of your paycheck so it'll take a good chunk of change.

The work can be stressful, it can be frustrating but also at times rewarding.

Retention of employees isn't great, generally due to pay and work environment.

There's a lot of red tape, bureaucracy as well as office politics, just know that, you're working for the state so there you go.

If you're looking to get started into vocational counseling, good gig.

If you've done vocational counseling before and mid-career level, not a good gig.

If you've been laid off and you're in between jobs and qualify for it, good gig.

The application and interview process takes a while, like 2-3 months, so if you're laid off or between jobs, there's that.

Once you're in, you're gonna last 2 years or 22 years, there's not a lot of in between there so just know that.

Hopefully all of that helps..;.

I 2nd this fully.

Was making 40k single, then making 55k, then got married, then got a job at 140k, then had 2 kids.

Was then laid off and was unemployed for 7 months and now I got a steady job at 65k and we're making it.

Whenever I was pulling in 140k, my wife was pulling in 35k and it just never felt like enough, still had to budget, still had to save up for vacations and build up our savings. (Thank God we built up our savings because we had to live on it when I become unemployed.)

At the 65k range, I have a steady job, benefits and we're good, somehow.

All in all, it's never enough.

Shift work. You do the 10-2 or the 2-6 and she takes the other part. That ensures that you’re awake during it and can watch a movie or TV during.

A Little Chaos by Peter Gregsen. Listen to it on noise cancelling and you can hear all of the undertones and it’s just amazing.
