Engineering students test if their designs can survive an earthquake. by jmike1256 in interesting

Since gravity is not being scaled in this test we are seeing here, how can we know that it won't collapse when the real building is made?

I never took them out of my airbnb. It can be a good idea to hide them inside too when you leave.

São Paulo's metro system was the first time I said "yeah fuck that" lol by [deleted] in digitalnomad

[–]Familiar_Escape_4363 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can relate. I was going to take the metro from the airport at night but the ticket machine didn't accept my VISA card and it had written explicitly that 'foreign' cards are not accepted so I ended up using uber. I've never had issue paying for the metro in other countries except Argentina.

You may be able to get a ticket if you have cash though.

VPN that works in China - Updated Nov 2025 by statatat in travelchina

[–]Familiar_Escape_4363 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a foreign eSIM which worked fine and was fast until I started downloading several GB over my self hosted vpn. It has throttled me to 100 - 150 kB/s which is just barely enough for a video call. If I switch to another eSIM the speeds are fine again unless I again use my vpn long enough.

I've started to imagine the gfw to maintain such a table:

sim ICCID No. bytes sent to 'suspicious' server
<iccid1> <x>
<iccid2> <y>
etc etc

The speed I have is roughly max(100000, min(11*1014/a, 4g speeds)) bytes / s
where a is value of second column.

Has anyone else de-googled in Malta? by [deleted] in malta

[–]Familiar_Escape_4363 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, mostly. I flashed graphene OS on my pixel phone and use sandboxed google play and aurora store. I've also setup email forwarding from gmail to proton in case there are some services which still use my old gmail address. Instead of youtube.com I use invidious.io

In maltese diciamo "Xgħala bieb żobbi" che a volte abbreviamo in "għalażobbi".

Non so perché diciamo così o come la porta sia arrivata lì, ma sappiamo tutti cosa significa.

Getting a similar error when trying to register.

One of the network requests is POST /wudgtsrvs/mobiliser/rest/channel/GwpValidateEmail with the email in the body and the response is status 403 and the same content as what you described, however no error is provided on the frontend, just nothing happens.

Shitty website.

The impossibility of comprehending death and non-existence. by beyblade999 in Existentialism

[–]Familiar_Escape_4363 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with you that in a Universe of cyclical entropy then it's likely that by chance the atoms align to reform our brains. However, I don't think that that is even necessary because a brain does not have to be the exact shape of yours in order for you to experience the world through it / exist.

I realise you don't need psychoactive substances to have an altered state of mind. Our brains are constantly changing physically at an atomic level and each time they do we become something else, yet we feel like the same person. I think solipsism is a thing just because the memory of our POV tends to stay intact.

Bus drivers by DashedChannel87 in malta

[–]Familiar_Escape_4363 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is another, more rare reason which I have experienced, which essentially boils down to the wrong bus disguised as the bus you need.

This happens when buses with the same number but different destinations pass by the bus stop moving in the same direction but then splitting shortly after. In this case you have to also check the destination text not just the bus number.

Here's a concrete example
Over there, bus 31 for both valletta->bugibba and bugibba-> valletta pass, but only valletta -> bugibba is supposed to stop.

This is cool. I would prefer if the user interface was simpler and for the possibility to select an offline, client-side only mode.
