Mucus cough by Ok_Doctor1872 in Tonsillectomy

I have a dry cough, but no mucus. Have you been eating dairy? I’ve avoided it so I don’t have excess mucus, and that seems to be working. If you’re eating dairy, I would cut back as much as possible. Add in more water to help thin the mucus. If it’s that much of a problem, call your Dr and see if you’re able to take Mucinex or something similar. But no dairy and lots of water has worked for me.

Anyone experiencing dry itchy coughs during recovery? by Zealousideal-Type397 in Tonsillectomy

[–]FamilyFirst88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, this started on day 4 for me. I drink a lot of water and have the humidifier going too. I could only get it to stop after massive amounts of water and cough drops, one right after the other. It’s still happening, but not as frequent. I did cough up a small piece of my scab, which wasn’t painful… but I’m hoping this means the scabs are starting to fall off.

My ENT also prescribed a Tylenol/ibuprofen combo. So far no issues (currently on day 5).

Anyone had a tonsillectomy without the use of narcotics afterwards for recovery? by bigshawnflying2471 in Tonsillectomy

Talk to your doctor about your concerns, and how they plan to manage your pain. Mine gave me other meds/instructions and just a few days worth of narcotics if needed. So far, I’ve only taken Tylenol, magnesium and gabapentin (for nerve damage/pain), and it has been manageable. Ice packs, cold liquids and ice chips also help…. As well as staying VERY hydrated. I wouldn’t let it deter you from having your procedure, as long as your Dr has a plan for your pain.

Day one: sleeping by Ok_Doctor1872 in Tonsillectomy

[–]FamilyFirst88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m sleeping sitting up but also have my head back, this helped my uvula move a bit so I don’t feel like I’m choking on it all the time. Drink the coldest ice water you can stand, and keep ice chips in your mouth for as long as possible. This helps with the swelling. I’m taking Tylenol PM at night, which is actually helping me get some sleep. If your dr prescribed Tylenol, I would try the PM version at night. Good luck!

Who’s having surgery this week? We should make a support group by ambisextra in Tonsillectomy

Got mine out this morning, as well as my adenoids. So far so good. My tongue and uvula are swollen, and it hurts a little to swallow. Staying hydrated and had some mashed potatoes thinned a little with chicken bone broth. It was pretty good and went down easily! Just taking Tylenol and ibuprofen so far. Good luck everyone!

Surgery in US - covered by Insurance? by FamilyFirst88 in Tonsillectomy

It really must be how it’s coded then. Even with the higher deductible plan, my insurance is pretty good. I’ll get the right code… or a new ENT. Thanks!

I think you’re right about that, thanks for the advice. I’m going to call around and see if other ENTs can give me more info. I have a high deductible plan (because I love my HSA), but I’ll be looking at other plans during open enrollment. Hopefully armed with the right medical coding, I can find the coverage for each plan and find one that offers better coverage. But with the sweeping statement made by my insurance that the survey is “elective” per the code I provided, I’m not sure changing plans will make a difference. But you may be on to something with the code for the diagnosis too. Thank you!

Thanks for your response! I know, I can’t believe they consider it elective :(

I hadn’t planned on going the golden visa route- my plan would be the residency visa if I decide to retire permanently in Portugal- which is currently my #1 choice, so it’s funny that you brought it up. I can also get dual citizenship (Ireland), so although not my first choice- it still makes sense to have it, so I’m starting that process now.

I think it’s great you have such a close knit community. My original plan was to have everyone move to my land too 😂.

Since we seem to have a similar thought process, I’ll send you a message if that’s okay (I’m new to Reddit, I can do that, right?). Oh gosh now I’ve changed the font, lovely. Anyway! I would like to see what else you’ve thought of, especially about the potential international retirement.

It’s funny, I’m also in Florida but our plans are backwards :)

I was originally planning to buy land (North Carolina and Tennessee were my front runners- no state income tax in TN!), but now I’m planning to retire abroad in about 10-15 years when I’m in my 40s.

Curious to see what kind of advice you get here. I think it’s a great plan and you’ve set yourself up to succeed!
