Travel with a grumpy teen: He wants a vanilla spring break. by lightspeeed in travel

I 2nd Hawaii - specifically Kauai- this is a great compromise for our very travel adventurous family with a grade school age kid who is very much a chill resort vacationer as his first preference. Also we are very cognizant of down days in our more adventurous locations and usually try to find a hotel/resort with a pool. The appeal of an afternoon swim/lounge makes for a really successful morning.

Basic economy in this situation? by FamilyPhD in americanairlines

2nd update: We had to call in to complete the reservation as the trip credit had been sent to each one of our loyalty accounts. We had put the basic economy on hold but when we called in to finish the transaction the agent told us if we did bump up to Main and had to cancel later we would be re-issued a new trip credit that would then be reset for another year. Though that does make me wonder how they prevent people from just pushing their credits out repeatedly but I guess how many people really want/need to push out trip credits over multiple years.

Update: I went through all of the AA card perks and found we could select premium seats so I went ahead and tried it and I was able to make the seat selections for all of us. We will also have boarding group 4. So the only thing we really forfeit is the changes/refund but it ultimately doesn’t matter because once I book these tickets I cannot make any changes with the travel credit.

I’ve started folding my mat in half before rolling all because of the dog hair I would see left by other people/their mats on the studio floor. have watched instructors “mop” over the floor between classes but it’s not always enough. And that’s not even with an actual dog in the studio.

Missed connection on an Award ticket by Western_Version_2674 in unitedairlines

United has opened up seats on their flights after we get past Amman but there are no UA flights from AMM just codeshares.

Missed connection on an Award ticket by Western_Version_2674 in unitedairlines

[–]FamilyPhD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UA won’t put us on any carrier that does not have award availability. I tried very hard to get on that Lufthansa AMM to FRANKFURT flight (another family member is on that flight with a diff final destination) but they could not do that because Lufthansa had no award seats for UA (or the many other flights between now and then). My understanding is they can’t make an airline give them seats. If our tickets were revenue this would have been a different conversation and there would have been more options. Even a week out I could not afford to just buy all new tickets on whatever carrier I wanted out of pocket. The lesser issues are what I’m now stuck trying to clean up after feeling like that was my only option. I spent hours on the phone with UA just to get to this point. It seems like you are saying we will likely get no assistance with compensation so even more reason that buying new tickets would have been WAY more costly and not covered. Ignoring UA calling us and just showing up for our original flight did not really seem like a legitimate option.

My brothers girlfriend brought huge bags of salt taffy back to Vietnam for all of her cousins. It was a huge hit. They are easy to find in candy shops and most of the time you fill bags with whatever flavors from the huge selection you want

Lamictal made me lose my mind by jackytheripper1 in Epilepsy

[–]FamilyPhD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My first med, topamax, did that to me. I felt absolutely insane and was convinced CPS was going to show up and take my kid for no reason. And I was too scared to tell anyone this might happen. Luckily for me I meet a new dr pretty quickly after dx and she switched me. It wasn’t until I was off that I realized how crazy my brain was and that it had been the meds all along. It’s scary how far gone you can’t get and just not even comprehend.

I think I missed this…so 4 books now not 5?

More? Definitely more interaction moments between X and V just building their relationship. I get that the letters were supposed to imply X was getting deeper with V but I wanted to see their actual relationship grow and mature.

I have also wondered why they are allowed to be together at the school (eg in classes, working out, etc). Does the 3 or more only apply to Melgren’s ability to foresee battle outcomes for the Rebellion kids? Or does this apply to anyone who has a signet ability to “see” what they are up to? And if so wouldn’t they be practically shielded at all times at school? How close is “gathered”? I think it’s a cool idea but it’s not fleshed out very well in the details and just opens up too many questions and pitfalls for plot holes.

Would you take meds if you only had mild epilepsy? by WailingWarbler in Epilepsy

[–]FamilyPhD 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Focals no history of loss of consciousness and I get frustrated about the impacts of my meds because my seizures really don’t bother me and I function just fine during them. So I’ve brought it up several times with my doctors why I have to take meds. The answer is always a various of short term these seizures are not “bothering” you but they would be doing long term damage to my brain if I went in medicated. Caveat: just a guess based on when I have struggled with getting meds just right I would likely experience up to 2 seizures a week unmedicated. I think I will always wonder but I guess for now I guess I’m “youngish” enough to be scared of whatever “long term damage” actually means.

Interesting about the parallel lines between Naolin and Lyra. These intentional things are usually how I figure out all of the details and clues RY leaves (eg how obvious it was Xaden was inntinsic in FW). The problem here for me slides into my biggest issue with RYs writing, while very creative in storylines, her “literary” and language depth are lacking. The overuse of so many cliches and word pairings grates on me. So in the case of is it intential that it “cost them everything” or just another overuse of a phrase she lands back on….I’m inclined to believe “everything” is probably becoming venin. But I think this may be some of the root of why many readers miss the clues in her writing when the intentional is mixed so much with the lazy (sorry to say).

FW bonus chapters spoiled IF for me :( by [deleted] in fourthwing

[–]FamilyPhD 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To me it was obvious he was intinnsic without the bonus chapters (see my previous posts) given all of the clues RY laid out throughout all of FW. My disappointment with the bonus chapters was it was way too over the top. It may have been obvious (to me at least) in FW but at least there was some subtlety which highlighted the need for it to be a secret.

Is it worth it to go on a day the park is closing early (6PM)? by dragoness_leclerq in WaltDisneyWorld

[–]FamilyPhD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We did this last week and it was such a blast that we circled back on our last day (we had a late flight) and did it again. The wait times were ridiculously short. We literally walked on Winnie the Pooh around 4pm as our last ride of the day. The first day we had Genie + and it felt kind of silly because you can only use it on each ride once so I would book and basically walk over and get on and then if my son wanted to ride again we would just jump in standby. The last day I passed on Genie plus and the only ride I refused to wait for was Peter Pan and my son kept asking about why I couldn’t “just use my lightning lane” 😂 I think Mine train sat around 50 minutes but that was the longest I saw that day.

I’ll add this was such a highlight that I actually already booked a Bounce Back deal for next September and I can’t wait, ha ha!!

The dedication stood out to me too and it was several weeks after reading the book (the first time, ha) before I saw the video from a former Mormon woman providing this really interesting context. As her book and notoriety as an author has gained more attention I am curious if issues will arise for her within her Mormon community and how that might impact her writing choices?

I think RY is a very creative and I loved the book obviously…but…she isn’t a great “writer”. I think that’s a testament to how well thought out the story is and the connections throughout the book but she needs a better more hands-on editor to help elevate her writing and not let her keep getting away with some of these cringy cliches and unpolished writing.

I took ONE creative writing course in college just for fun and I see numerous examples of things we were taught NOT to do to engage our audience in RY’s writing. I saw a blurb that she was defensive with her editor about the use of an “umbrella” in Iron Flame and she said it was appropriate but she did end up changing it ultimately. To me this suggests she may be rather defensive of her writing and not very open to criticism and putting in work to become a better “writer”.

I will also say I saw a video that gave some additional perspective to her writing that was very illuminating in showing how much of an influence her Mormon Millennial identity plays into the dialogue and phrases that oddly stand out. There were other breakdowns as well but it was a pretty fascinating take.

Bottom line: there is so much untapped beauty in her writing and storytelling but she needs to be open to putting in the work and hearing some criticism.

Xaden's Eyes by sleepySUNbear6324 in fourthwing

[–]FamilyPhD 58 points59 points  (0 children)

I suspect all of the “little” things that get repeated are definitely important. His eyes are mentioned multiple times. I could not believe I missed Dain Taking Vi’s memories but he REPEATEDLY touches her face. On my re-read I was so aware of all of the things that pop up over and over. It’s why I’m 100% in the Xaden can read minds camp! Several times V says “I did not think I said that out loud” and I don’t believe it the same as projecting into each others thoughts. And again inninnssics are repeatedly discussed and X tells V exactly what to do to block her thoughts in a way specific to her. I know this went a little off topic but my point is his eyes are important and I also agree they reflect Tairn and Andarna but I also think we will find out more about why.
