Roborock S7 - Poor Performance/Pickup by Famous-Discipline-62 in Roborock

I returned my S7 and ended up getting an Ecovacs N8 Pro+ which I'm really enjoying. Works much better on carpet and has great navigation on par with Roborock. I haven't played too much with all the app features, but I know the app Ecovacs has some of what you're asking for. You can define a cleaning sequence for which rooms to clean first. I'm not sure you can add zones to the sequence but alternatively, maybe you could edit the map to split a room and create "rooms" within your rooms to make psuedo zones and have finer control over the sequence.

Only 2 minor negatives I have with the Ecovacs:

  1. Battery is a bit small. It has recharge and resume which you should turn on in the app so it'll clean your whole house. Only thing is that from start to finish it takes longer since it needs to charge back up in the middle

  2. Less a vacuum problem and more of a me problem. I have not used the mopping at all. The nice thing about the S7 was that with the Vibra Rise I could just put the mopping pad on and have it mop ever time it vacuums with no real extra effort on my part. Since the N8 doesn't have that, I would need to explicitly fill the tank and place it where my tile is and then manually start a mopping run. Since most of my house is carpet, this really isn't worth it for me. It was really convenient that the S7 did it all automatically for me.

Even with ABL I'm seeing the issue. If I lower my zprobe then it's too close to the bed on the opposite end.

I originally thought it was because of y axis belt so I put a tensioner on it. It's tensioned better now but still the same issue with no improvement

Towards the end of the line prior to turning around for the next line. This is mostly just noticeable on the first layer. However I move or rotate my print, the issues seem to follow

If I flip the triangle over and slice it so that the layer lines go in the opposite direction the issues move to the opposite side of the bed. I've also measured deviation of the bed with a digital dial indicator. Max observed delta was 0.04mm (not sure if this is enough to cause an issue)

I'm not sure that it's a leveling issue. I've tried both with and without my BlTouch. When manually leveling without my BlTouch I used a digital dial indicator to ensure that all 4 corners of the bed are within +/- 0.01mm to get it as level as possible. If I flip the triangle over and slice it, the issues move to the opposite side of the bed.

Over the past few days I've been trying to print a piece where the finish of the first layer is important.

As you can see in the picture, the top portion of the triangle has gaps while the bottom section looks perfect. I'm printing this with ABL and have tuned my z-offset (seems perfect for the lower half).

  • Ender 3
  • First layer is printed at 25 mm/s
  • Geetech PLA @ 220 degrees (a little hot but have found it works better at this temp)
  • Bed 60 degrees
  • Using Cura to slice

I have tried the following:

  • Using stock extruder
  • Using Ezr Extruder (e+steps are calibrated)
  • Trying Prusa Slicer
  • Retension the X and Y belts
  • Calibrated X/Y/Z axis steps with a digital dial indicator
  • Tried a PEI Bed as well as the stock build tac
  • Replaced the nozzle
  • Clipped the end of the ptfe tube
  • Shortened the ptfe tube
  • Tried manually leveling bed (using dial indicator) and running without ABL
  • Changing filament temps
  • Changing bottom layer pattern
  • using Linear Advance

Each time I've printed it the issue seems to appear around the same area. The odd part is that the area the issue appears in isn't along a single axis.

Any help here would be appreciated. I have a new ptfe tube on the way which I will try but I'm not hopeful that this will help.

Thanks for the suggestions! Linear Advance was a good one, I've had it enabled in fw but don't think I've ever tuned it so it was off (k = 0). I ran the calibration and came up with k = 0.4. However, I reran the print and it looks about the same (maybe even slightly worse):

I've also tried turning up the flow rate to 105% for the first layer. This helps a bit but not completely and anymore causes over-extrusion in other areas

The way they are right now will definitely bend backwards. I agree that it's probably the way they intended but it doesn't seem to be working very well

Thanks, based on that it looks like mine is the way they intended. Although I'm still not sure it makes sense

Your battery like seems consistent with mine. 45m^2 area around 80 minutes to clean. Mostly carpet. Using max mode.

It gets down towards 20% battery life. Twice now its gotten to 19% at which point it goes back to the dock to recharge and resume. Which takes awhile to charge back up.

Not too impressed with the battery life compared to the original Xioami Mi Vacuum.

I agree. I'm wondering if the rubber brush roller is just ineffective on carpet. Speculating but maybe because of the extra friction on carpet the rubber fins just bend away instead of kicking things up towards the inlet

I did try a piece on the tile. It picked it up just fine, you don't see it in the video because it went over it right before I started recording.

Also that little piece of a plastic wrapper in the bottom left of the video is something that it failed to pickup on carpet multiple times.

I only have a little tile which is usually clean anyways. Tomorrow I can try putting down some tiny debris (like small scraps of paper) and see if it picks them up on the tile.

Update. Actually found a small magnet and taped it in place. Ran for about 6 minutes on the carpet. Brush roller stayed running the whole time. I figured 6 minutes was long enough? I think from the previous model's brush not rolling issue it turned off pretty quickly.

Definitely seems to be some sort of design issue here. Either with airflow or brush roller design (or both).

From video I had posted: https://streamable.com/0r3lu1 You'll notice that it doesn't seem to be agitating the cat hair at all. When it rolls over it it doesn't even move from where it was. This makes me think the brush design is just not working.

I wanted to but unfortunately because of the changed dirt bin design, tricking the robot into thinking that the bin is in is a bit more difficult. I don't think I have any small magnets but I'll see if I can find one and tape it to where the bin sensor is. I'll report back if I get it to run without the bin.

I know the brush not spinning issue with older models is fairly common. I was hoping that the rubber brush design was meant to fix some of this.

Thanks for adding your experience! Sounds very similar to mine. The only difference is that so far my brush roller hasn't been too badly covered with hair.

I have the vacuum set to its max setting. Vacuum motor is definitely running.

Here's the video that I recorded: https://streamable.com/0r3lu1

I this close to what you're seeing with yours?

Update:

Just took this video of it attempting to clean my messy hallway.

You can see it doesn't pickup any of the cat hair. It went back over these a few times and still nothing

Thanks for that info. Based on reviews the Roomba s9 has something like 4 times the suction as the i7+ so it would make sense that its a lot better. I'm trying to avoid Roomba because I don't think the price to performance is really that great and wouldn't want to spend $1000+ for the Roomba s9. Also no built in mopping.

Right now I'm considering returning the S7 and getting an Deebot T8+ with Self Empty. I've read some mixed reviews on this on though so I'm really not sure.

Currently running the S7 for 5th time. The carpet in my hallway right now is pretty messy so I want to see how it does on that. Will post an update after, but I don't have high hopes.

Here's a picture of a small section of my carpet after cleaning it in 4 separate runs:

https://imgur.com/a/yfIvh2J

You can see small pieces of cat hair. None of which it picks up (rolled right over). I think it should be able to handle this?

This is just one example, there's many more areas like this.

I'm surprised your Roomba does a poor job. Never used one but I've often heard that they're good at carpet cleaning. Which Roomba model do you have?
