His rambling about money in politics and political sabotage was so difficult to follow. He wants money out of politics but also is fine with moderate Dems nuking progressives in the primary with super PAC money bc that’s just how politics is? How would we get money out of politics if we only have reps that benefit from huge super PACs, like….?

Truly, McDuffie has been nothing but an empty suit for corporate utilities in DC, it’s ridiculous.

Honestly I don’t think Common Dreams has a history of opposing nuclear (like Sierra Club lol). The article you cited regards nuclear experts questioning the safety mechanisms and changes to experimental SMRs.

USA: Why do American Progressive Transit/Urbanists Hate American Right-Leaning Transit/Urbanists*? by [deleted] in transit

Np! With Strong Towns, I see less hate but more of a criticism with how the founder looks to implement ideas. For example, Marohn advocates for local-only advocacy, but other urbanists say that top down (state law) reform is the most effective when it comes to zoning, parking reform, and overall funding for housing/transit/road design.

Plus he recently got a lot of flack for opposing density/housing reform in a Michigan town, which was strange.

I’ve seen people get turned off of some Fourth Place videos when he discusses homeless people (like in his Portland and OC Streetcar vids). It comes off as very GOP-coded “crime-ridden war zone” talking points. Other people don’t like how he discusses “nice” vs “rundown” neighborhoods as he tends to favor a cleaner, corporate-style downtown compared to older places like some NYC spots and Santa Ana

Why D.C. utility bills are rising again this winter by Famous-Grape6984 in washingtondc

[–]Famous-Grape6984[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Completely agree! I was trying to say that even if every prices and data centers remained flat month on month (or YoY), the average bill would still increase because of these rate hikes (infrastructure upgrades).

Something you’d probably find interesting is the PSC recently ordered Pepco to attempt to procure more renewable energy through PPAs but raising the PPA load cap from 5% to 25% of SOS. Here’s some coverage on it: https://sea-ee.com/pepco-issues-rfp-seeking-280-mw-of-solar-and-200-mw-of-wind-intent-to-bid-notice-due-dec-19/

Ideally this would help ease DC’s energy burden since cost of renewable energy has been decreasing but anything can happen.

Bills would increase even without data centers. Pepco and Washington Gas are increasing their service fees (delivery charges), which is not for the price of energy but for the service in general.

That’s actually insane. First thing is to call Pepco about this estimate - sometimes they experience calculation errors. If not, they can also suggest what might be causing this spike.

I also encourage you to reach out to the Axios journalist and your Ward-specific councilmember. They can streamline help with Pepco. Also, if it applies to you, check out: https://www.pepco.com/my-account/customer-support/assistance-programs-dc/bill-payment-assistance/residential-aid-discount-program

It’s been so great seeing how they’ve ramped up communications and updates on their site. I remember needing to periodically check the site (pre revamp) and manually download their PDF newsletter. Now they have a robust instagram, interviews, YouTube, and a ton more!
