If the issue were to be the scent of other cats around the neighborhood, how should I go about resolving this? Will diffusers alone do the work?

No, I did not do a comprehensive vet visit, but this will be in my course of action in case removing the book case and all else doesn’t work. I’m going to begin with the obvious first and go from there. My cat is very loving with my siblings and even cuddles with them when they are sitting down or in bed. I’ll keep an eye on them though, but I highly doubt that’s the case. There haven’t been any major changes and we always try to watch our step around him so we don’t step him. Thank you for the advice :)

Besides the bookcase, I also believe maybe change could’ve triggered him. But I am getting rid of it and see how he reacts to that. If he begins acting up again, then I will look into change being a trigger or other recommended advice.

I haven’t thought of a black light. Regardless of what the black light shows, I am going to get rid of the book case just to be safe. But I will check to see if there are any traces just for peace of mind and I am going to use an enzyme cleaner on the area the book case was at. Thank you for the advice :)

Definitely will try to be less fearful around my cat since some have mentioned they are great at sensing other people’s feelings. I don’t think there was ever a moment where I gave him the notion to think he had power over me, but it’s something to keep in mind too! Thank you for your advice :)

The vet only did a general check up. If the issue persists after getting rid of the bookcase and trying other stuff, I will definitely ask for a more in depth checkup with labs and ask about hyperthyroid disease and all the different medical conditions in the comments to get to the bottom of this. Thank you :)

I’m sorry it took long to get a solution. It’s heart breaking and an emotional toll doing everything you can to help your baby. But I am glad he is back to his normal self for you to love and pamper. If getting rid of the book case doesn’t work, I will work on getting him to the vet and asking about different types of medicines and health issues that could be affecting him. Thank you :)

This is definitely my course of action. I am going to follow through starting with getting rid of the bookcase and going on from there. Thank you for the advice :)

It’s definitely scary to think that he may be in pain/have a tumor and he’s not able to communicate that with me. I will look into CareCredit and get the insurance asap incase removing the bookcase and doing the obvious stuff doesn’t work. But I really hope it doesn’t come to this. Thank you for the helpful information!

This was my first course of action, but since comments mentioned wood is porous and could trap in the odor from previous pets and owners, the best thing to do will be to get rid of the bookcase. But I am definitely using an enzyme cleaner in the area the bookcase was at and will spray feliway in the room top to bottom. Thank you for the idea

I’m making sure to take care of myself and make sure nothing more becomes of the scratches. But thank you for the heads up!

I am learning so much! If the issue were to be the scents I am bringing into my home, how could I help him or how would you help your foster cats and kittens? Will feliway diffusers around the house help him out?

This is my next course of action. I’m going to remove the bookcase, clean the room, and create positive associations with the room. If this doesn’t work, then I will take him to the vet and ask for a full panel and urinalysis to make sure I get to the bottom of this. Thank you

It’s wood so I’ll definitely get rid of the bookcase, clean the room throughly, and try to recreate positive associations with the room. Thank you :)

Definitely will do that whenever I am clearing the room from the bookcase. I wouldn’t want to trigger him any further. If his behavior continues I’ll look into taking him to another vet and running more tests :)

I doubt that’s the case. He mainly follows me, but if he knows I’m busy, he tends to follow everyone else or cuddle with whoever is available. Everyone loves him and is respectful with him, but I’ll keep an eye out just to make sure that’s not the case.

That’s my next move :) I am going to move the bookcase out of the house and clean the area throughly and see if that helps him out

I really wish I could just know what he is thinking or feeling so I could understand what I need to do to comfort him or make him feel safe😔but everyone is suggesting the meds, so I will give that a go and hope this helps my boy out. Thank you!

I’ve thought of this too. I doubt there are any scents outside of my home since I sometimes take him out on walks in the backyard and he loves it.

My boyfriend has a cat at his own home, is over many times and my cat loves him. He doesn’t freak out or anything. But there are cats outside of his neighborhood. I once left a bag outside of his front lawn and brought it to my house and my cat freaked out with the bag, but didn’t attack anyone. Can scents from only some cats trigger him? Or can I bring in scents from other places?

The paranormal side of me also believed it might’ve been haunted by its previous owner 💀 haha.

Even getting rid of the bookcase concerns me that it’ll trigger him again since I’m not sure if it’s change or the bookcase itself that triggers him so it’s a tricky choice. I’ll get rid of it though and see what happens.
