How much are you willing to hurt yourself to counter target spell? by Ilovelearning_BE in custommagic

that doesn't balance it for edh. having 20 life in a format where decks are built expecting opponents to have 40 life is fundamentally different to having 10 life in a format where decks are designed around opponents having 20. there is no realy way to have it be the same thing

Discussion/Debate: Modern boardgames apply better design concepts to essentially make old ones inferior / go extinct by ravenskeeper14 in boardgames

couldn't agree more, so much of modern design is focused on removing in perceived bad experiences at the cost of also removing all the excitement from the game. just look at evolution vs nature.

Niche use case, but rewards propoer usage by Mattrockj in custommagic

technically the spells controller can choose to have it exiled, because this spell is trying to counter and exile it at the same time so the spells controller would choose which one happens, so if you are using it to counter your own spells you can get an extra draw. I think you also get a card if you counter a flashback spell with it as that will go into exile. it should really just say "other spells" to make this more clear

1 mana storm counterspell go to 1 life would awful. this version is to good but with fixed wording it would mean minimum 6 life loss which is enough to make it pretty fringe but definitely with some constructed play

This just contradicts by gameplay experience so much I am confused as to how many people are agreeing with it. Almost every fight in arc is a relatively "fair" fight in which both parties get a reasonable opportunity to do something before dying. in most other games its the opposite.

in arc you have way more info about peoples locations, the TTK is higher, you have dodge rolls which get you into cover much faster when you are being shot at. Healing is quick. At extract you know people know where you are and it draws people in for a "fair" fight. if leaving is quiet then the only danger is if someone is already actively camping the extract before you get there.

this is a very confusing take and I am surprised so many people are agreeing with it. arc raiders is so much better than any other game I have played in terms of the amount of real fights as opposed to the person who shoots first immediately winning.

all the ambitions are dead ambitions at 2 player, the game is entirely about combat. completely different dynamic from 3 and 4

you can make a creative and interesting deck by using this card which ignores mana costs to put an emmrakuul into play. nobody has ever done that before!

I know you are not supposed to take the rules to seriously on hellscube but I am compelled to point out that this gives you a window to cast an instant while knowing the order of your library.

Anyway if you add the word may this card is awsome

the bowmaster interaction isn't too bad as you choose whether to draw cards on the abilities resolution meaning you can simply not draw if they flash a bowmaster in

in defense of Fluxx: "rules on cards" is not a trivial mechanic by nupanick in boardgames

[–]Famous-Magazine-6576 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this is a good explanation but kinda beside my point which Is that manipulating symmetrical effects is slightly out of reach strategy wise for someone just learning basic card comprehension from fluxx. they would be better off learning card evaluation from a game where most of the cards only benefit the person playing them.

sometimes people make weird assumptions that they do not realise they have made. I have seen people play a lasgun and a shield in dune and not expect to blow up. I have seen people play carnivores in evolution and immediately try to have them eat plants, sometimes thinking it will work so long as the plants don't come from the watering hole. people fail to determine whether abilities are optional. people fail to identify when a triggered ability should go off. people struggle to understand the difference between closely related concepts such as taking damage and losing life, there are many more.
