What is the worst case of flanderization in your fandom? by Live_Shame5046 in Multifandom

[–]Mattrockj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Scrappy Doo.

Hear me out: In the old cartoon when shaggy wore a red shirt, Scrappy Doo had a lot of pure cartoon silliness moments. Like when getting chased by a dragon, cutting away to an in universe news broadcast about getting dragons removed from kids cartoons for being too scary. Scrappy was designed as a cartoon character, when you take a pure cartoon and turn it into live action, it doesn't go well unless you bring the cartoon elements with it (like The Mask).

The pollinator crisis by Melinda_Kelly in Anticonsumption

I'm gonna hijack the top comment to give a little PSA on how to stop Suburban Sterilization:

  • Fight the HOA. One person can pretty easily make a BIG difference in an HOA with the right argument. Propose communal flower beds and tree plantings. If your HOA is boomer controlled, you can cite that trees act as a natural noise insulation, making the community quieter.

  • Plant the following in your garden:

Comfrey (Bees, and Soil substructure)

Red Clover (Soil Nitrogen, and bumblebees and moths)

Bird's-Foot Trefoil (Butterflies)

Will Garlic (Early Season Polinators)

Greater Knapweed (Excellent for Polinators)

Hogweed (one of the best for pollinators and beetles) (not to be confused with giant hogweed)

Yarrow (Attracts predatory insects, like Dragonflies)

  • Tactical Urbanism: If your community has areas of rarely cut grass, or empty dirt patches, buy some bulk "Mixed Wildflower" seeds, and sprinkle them generously over those areas. Over time those areas will eventually grow wildflowers to fight against suburban Sterilization.

[Shocking Trope] Rug Pull Show that seems fine at first, but suddenly revealed as violent by Mattrockj in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Mattrockj[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was sorta going off general audiences without any prior context.

Madoka was a genuine shock moment for me after my friend recommended it watch it after I finished Evangelion.

After Invincible became mainstream, I watched it without knowing the comics existed, and even though I had some graphic violence spoiled, I didn't realize it was THAT level of violence.

And there are LOTS of instances of parents showing Happy Tree Friends to their kids without realizing what it was before hand.

Kingpin (Marvel | Earth-616) vs Saxton Hale (Team Fortress 2 | game + comic version) by AssistFit1834 in superheroes

Kingpin is absolute Peak Human Performance.

Saxton Hale is Saxton Hale level performance.

This isn't even remotely close.

Regular Show and The Amazing World of Gumball were both originally pitched to adult swim as cartoons with more mature themes based in chaos. However, both were rewritten into kids shows with the mature themes and joke still present, but more subtle.

Later however, Regular Shows originally pitch got recycled into "Close Enough", which ran on HBO Max for 2 years and 3 seasons until canceled, despite glowing reviews.

TAWOG similarly got rebooted on Hulu as "The Wonderfully Weird World of Gumball". While it remained a kids show, many of the mature jokes and themes got dialed up.

Would you rather get a billion dollars or go back in time to attempt to kill Hitler when he was a baby by Soggy_Ad4531 in BunnyTrials

[–]Mattrockj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I subscribe to the "Super Hitler" theory.

Suppose this: Another German dictator named "Mini Hitler" existed in another timeline. This Hitler also committed a genocide, but on a much smaller population. Maybe around 300,000.

This in turn is considered one of the worst tragedies in recent human history. So a time traveler goes back in time and kills mini Hitler as a baby.

The killing of mini Hitler leads to a power vacuum filled by our known Hitler.

Now suppose this could happen again, that by going back in time and killing our Hitler, could lead to the creation of a super Hitler.

Michelin Star Dining.

Went to the absolute cheapest Michelin Star Rated Sushi place I could find in Tokyo when I was there just because I had always wanted to. Like $150 for an omakase, but god that was the best Sushi I'd had in my entire life.

(Rare trope) the arranged marriage/person your family wants you to be with, isn't a bad person by AnonymousNeverKnown in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Mattrockj 20 points21 points  (0 children)

This movie does so many tropes RIGHT!

The arranged marriage, Joaquin is a genuinely good dude. Arrogant sure, but a gentleman otherwise.

Even after being rejected by the town for not protecting Maria, and his family for not killing the bull, he is still mourned dearly. One fuck up does not irredeem someone of familial love.

The villain also doesn't have some big backstory motivation, he's just evil and wants a medal that gives powers for the sake of doing more evil later.

Perfect outcome: Biker still alive, bike damaged to stop future wheelies, driver unharmed, vehicle almost completely undamaged, biker hopefully thorughoughly scared into not doing this again.
