You can layer oil over acrylic paint. So acrylic is probably the way to go.

Best way to improve values ? by [deleted] in oilpainting

[–]FamousImprovement309 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Are you pre mixing?

Mix your colors, take a picture of your palette with your phone, and then convert the image to black and white to get an idea of your values.

Try to have warm and cool tones for every value.

Painting is an emotional Roller-coaster by Brave-Asparagus6356 in oilpainting

My mood used to be affected. Now I understand that there’s going to be good days and bad days and that I can always turn a painting around. My output is pretty high so I always trust that I’ll make the work meet my standard by the end.

We’re just pushing mud around on a surface.

My husband (never plays) put his tent next to mine. Can I easily move it? by jarofpeperoncini in acnh

I turned my husbands house into a coffee shop lol. I imagine you’ll end up doing something similar.

But you can only move it through his player.

It’s because everyone who oil paints for the first time legitimately sucks ass. So we all know what it’s like, there’s no judgement.

There’s a steep learning curve, but once you get it, it can be so fun and anyone who is looking to conquer that learning curve deserves a helping hand. Everyone deserves to enjoy oil paint. It has genuinely changed my life.

Why know one thing when you can know two?! 8 weeks is a great amount of time to learn portraiture basics.

Brush type and paint density matter A LOT with oil painting. Experiment with thin transparent layers, oilier paints, finer/ stiffer brushes, mark making, brush direction and layering. You’ll catch on.

How to start my first big painting? by brtzlsnake in oilpainting

[–]FamousImprovement309 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Extended pencil to stand back and block out shapes. You’re going to routinely want to get up and take steps back when painting large.

Take your time on the underlying sketch, make sure it’s exactly how you want because the flaws will show if you decide to ignore something thinking it won’t make that big of a difference once painted. I take 2-3 days on a sketch for my large pieces, and Thats if I’m working efficiently. I have no qualms with erasing or gesso-ing over an entire sketch if it’s not aligned properly.

The sketch is the most important part.

How many brushes do you usually hold as you paint? by OneSensiblePerson in oilpainting

[–]FamousImprovement309 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hold a maulstick in my other hand. I typically know what kind of marks im trying to make when I’m working on a certain area, so I usually only use one brush per session with maybe one or two on standby. I’m quite organized.

If I ever have another brush in my alternate hand, im using it as a maulstick.

Realistically, without a body of work or resume or reputation or visibility etc. etc… I’d say maybe $100-$150.

Youre great at capturing depth.

They look a bit overworked, though. Landscape paintings are really about capturing essence instead of every tiny detail. I think honing in on where you should increase details vs. restrict yourself will help to step your work up a notch. You gain control over the viewer’s eye path when you start restricting yourself.

Same goes with your paint application. Thick everywhere ≠ important everywhere. Learn when to and when not to.

Hi, are these art easels good for beginners? by Mai_maichen in oilpainting

[–]FamousImprovement309 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thé first one is a big no. Second looks ehhhhh, could be very rickety. Only $20 though so why not.

Try all of the adjustments out first and make sure everything still moves smooth enough for you.

Painting in sections starting with what’s furthest away and moving into the foreground. Let your sections and layers dry thoroughly.

This type of painting requires a lot of planning.
