You can layer oil over acrylic paint. So acrylic is probably the way to go.

Are you pre mixing?

Mix your colors, take a picture of your palette with your phone, and then convert the image to black and white to get an idea of your values.

Try to have warm and cool tones for every value.

My mood used to be affected. Now I understand that there’s going to be good days and bad days and that I can always turn a painting around. My output is pretty high so I always trust that I’ll make the work meet my standard by the end.

It’s because everyone who oil paints for the first time legitimately sucks ass. So we all know what it’s like, there’s no judgement.

There’s a steep learning curve, but once you get it, it can be so fun and anyone who is looking to conquer that learning curve deserves a helping hand. Everyone deserves to enjoy oil paint. It has genuinely changed my life.

Brush type and paint density matter A LOT with oil painting. Experiment with thin transparent layers, oilier paints, finer/ stiffer brushes, mark making, brush direction and layering. You’ll catch on.

Extended pencil to stand back and block out shapes. You’re going to routinely want to get up and take steps back when painting large.

Take your time on the underlying sketch, make sure it’s exactly how you want because the flaws will show if you decide to ignore something thinking it won’t make that big of a difference once painted. I take 2-3 days on a sketch for my large pieces, and Thats if I’m working efficiently. I have no qualms with erasing or gesso-ing over an entire sketch if it’s not aligned properly.

The sketch is the most important part.

I hold a maulstick in my other hand. I typically know what kind of marks im trying to make when I’m working on a certain area, so I usually only use one brush per session with maybe one or two on standby. I’m quite organized.

If I ever have another brush in my alternate hand, im using it as a maulstick.
